Name: Opalescence “Opal” Whitmann
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Trainer Type:Disgraced Trainer
Hometown: Opelucid City, Unova
Appearance: Opal is a rather slim young girl, and while that alone would make her seem fragile, her confident stance more than makes up for it. Despite her petite size, she always holds her head up high with her chest out, a confident smile gracing her face as a pair of hazel eyes is always looking for something new to discover. Their round shape reflects a bright curiosity that is almost impossible for her to hide. Her long, strawberry blonde hair is almost always tied up in a long pony-tail under a beige cap she bought upon first entering Johto. It’s a far cry from just leaving her wavy-hair hanging in Unova, but that was the point.
Her sister was more of the fashion forward girl, so she avoided that at all cost. Instead, she prefers jeans, sneakers, t-shirts, and anything good for getting down and dirty. That isn’t to say she doesn’t like fancy outfits every once in a while, but she prefers almost too casual outfits. She’s not afraid to be dirty for a bit too long after a rough day in training, but she hates smelling too badly.
She keeps herself fairly well groomed most days, especially when facing gyms, but there are just some days where literally the only thing she cares about is making sure she’s wearing deodorant.
Personality: Despite the misfortunes in her life, Opal is a fairly sociable and optimistic young woman, often focusing on the bright side rather than lingering on the bad. She has a very confident demeanor to her, and is extraverted, preferring to be around friends rather than to be alone. While she is intelligent, she is also rather impulsive, wanting to follow her heart rather than her head in most cases. She can also be quite careless, and has a bad habit of getting into battles completely unprepared and thinking very little of her Pokemon. She allows her gut to make most of her decisions, and for that reason, she’s pretty prone to making mistakes.
Her failure in the Unova League had pretty much made her a disgrace in the eyes of the Whitmann family, and while she is aware of this, she more often than not ignores it. As optimistic as she is, she is also a bit on the sensitive side, and if pushed out of her positive thinking, can quickly drop to a pit of despair. She usually bounces back from this just as quickly, but in the event that she can’t, there’s quite a bit of a bitter side to her. She’ll often wonder where she went wrong, why she couldn’t succeed in Unova.
Just thinking about Unova can get her down at times…
…Even if it takes a while, she’ll eventually snap out of it, hopefully.
Opal is extremely unpredictable, her decisions not any more so than the wind that blows in the air. As mentioned before, she follows her heart as she did in Unova, but the loss of the league shifted something in her. She still tries to do the right thing, but no longer having contact with her family and her safe haven makes knowing what that right decision is even harder. Starting a new journey alone in a region she’s never been to before doesn’t make the decision making any easier… but she’s certain that she’ll figure it out.
Opal is a rather relaxed, stress free kind of person. She’s plenty good at listening… if you manage to get your words in before she starts going. She can talk. A lot. For hours. She’ll probably never grow tired of it. In any case, having taken on one region and started on the next, Opal is most excited to get some new experiences in her belt in a region filled with Pokemon she’d never seen before. She’s open to change, and in fact, it excites her! She’s always itching for something new!
While she may be extraverted, she likes to give a bit of a cool impression. She tries not to let people think she cares too much, and may seem rather cold to her Pokemon. The truth is, she is very empathetic, and often struggles to see Pokemon suffer. While she would’ve been honest about it before, recent events prevent her from being too comfortable with making friends…
History: Being born in the city where the final gym badge rests is a lot more pressure than you would think. From the start, younger sister Opal was at a disadvantage from her pretty much perfect older sister… by about two years. Yeah. By the time she was born, Leslie Whitmann was already two years old, which meant that Opal really had to rev up her engine if she hoped to catch up.
You see, Opal was a… bit of a surprise, let’s just say. Everything in the Whitmann household was set in stone. They first had a son, who was actually five years older than Opal, set to take on the Pokemon league by her father. Then came Leslie, the girl who would become a star on the Contest Stage, carefully directed by her mother. So when Opal was born… well that complicated plans a bit. They had to have a plan for her too, otherwise their peers may assume they were messing around recklessly.
That was when they decided on a third path: Opal would be a Dragon Type Trainer.
It was no secret that Opelicid was home to the powerfully rare Dragon-Type Gym at the time, so Dragon-Type Pokemon were always a strong element of their identity. In fact, Opelucid was the main inspiration for her name: Opalescence, or Opal for short. Though the name was beautiful, she was often treated like an opal stone: that being she was just about invisible to her parents.
While they never outright said it, Opal could always tell that her parents weren’t ever thrilled to see her exactly. It was always Leslie they were looking for, their pride and joy. Leslie could do anything Opal could and then some. She got the best grades, was great with the arts, especially dancing, and she was smarter and stronger than her little sister. Opal was often frustrated with the amount of attention her sister would get, and even her brother sometimes. Sure, they were pushed harder than she was, but it was hard for her to get her parents to even acknowledge she existed.
Finally she had her opportunity to prove to her parents she was just as valuable as her siblings.
While they couldn’t get in touch with Iris, who was busy becoming a champion at the time, they got together with a family friend to see if she had what it took to raise a Dragon-Type Pokemon and become a Dragon-Type specialist. And well… she’s here isn’t she? How well do you think it went?
Yeah, she tried to befriend some of the Axew the young man had bred, but none of them took to her. She tried listening to his techniques, but no matter how hard she tried, none of the Dragon-Type Pokemon would take to her. He explained that due to Dragon-Types being among the harder types of Pokemon to train, Opal would have to go on a journey and take on the Gym Challenge before trying again. In other words, she failed so badly he doubted she could actually do it. At all. But at least she could try to get stronger and see if that would help?
Naturally, Opal gave this a shot and bid her family farewell before heading to Nuvema Town. There, she received a Snivy as her first starter. While connecting with him was hard at first, they ended up becoming a pretty solid team… at least she thought. They never really became the best of friends, hence why he isn’t with her now, but she was certain she learned something from training him.
Of course, he was far from the only Pokemon she met. The Pokemon from Unova were the heart and soul of her journey, and she loved every moment with every one of them! However, her failure came when she faced the final Gym Leader: Iris. She was one week away from earning her Unova Champion title, and boy was she tough. Still, even despite that, Opal tried taking her challenge head on. Unfortunately, Opal and her then Serperior weren’t good enough to defeat Iris.
The battle wasn’t even close. Iris mowed down four members of her team with just her Fraxure before the future champion had enough. “How could you treat your Pokemon like that?!” she scolded her. “Screaming out attacks without a plan? Disgraceful! You may have earned seven of Unova’s badges, but you’re far from ready to face a league. You used your Pokemon so carelessly that I simply can’t allow you to go any further. I’m so sorry, Opal, but I’m afraid your journey in Unova ends here.”
And just like that, she’d become a disgrace… in her own hometown no less! She was the laughing stock of Opelucid, having lost so badly and so carelessly that she wasn’t even allowed to attempt to fight Iris again. Her journey was just… over? Having disgraced her family so badly, the Whitmann home was no longer open to her, and she’d never heard from her family since her failure in the gym. Having some compassion for her, and looking past the way she treated her Pokemon, Iris suggested she take on one of the other Pokemon leagues and try to start anew. Maybe one of them could teach her what she couldn’t learn in Unova.
And so, leaving everything she’d achieved in Unova behind, Pokemon and all, she decided to sail the open sea to make her way over to the Johto league. Perhaps there she could figure out where she went wrong in Unova and right them. After all… Johto, too, had a Dragon Type Gym.
Goals: To redeem herself for her failures in defeating the Unova League, and/or discovering the person she wants to be. She also wants to become a good enough Trainer to command a Dragon-Type Pokemon.
Other Info: First character! Depending on what I decide for her after earning a badge, she may continue down the path toward being a champion, or she may try to join Team Rocket. We’ll see.
