[attr="class","teethtext"]It felt strange to start over again for what felt like the twentieth time. Yet, there was always a sense of anew thrill behind it every time. The burnt scarred man never really knows what kind of life he was going to get himself into each and every time he’d travel to a new location. Some good, and some bad. Could be finally reach his life long dream of becoming a gym leader? Or, could this new life change him into something he has been considering for several years now? Only time could tell. But for now, there was nothing he could do other than take the first step… literally.

Warm crimson colored orbs shifted over the rather small peaceful town known as New Bark, silently admiring the chill and friendly atmosphere that place held within its surrounding of the heavily forested area. Mav followed the worn out path, conveniently marked for new comers to the region. With such a small the town, it was hard to imagine anyone getting lost but surely the signs up meant that some do. Regardless, the new and upcoming trainer strolled towards the larger of buildings that he could only assumed was the Professors Lab.

“This is it, huh.” Mav paused out side the doors, taking the architecture for a moment. Hew knew that New Bark was a rather ‘older’ town. But for some reason, the man expected it to be at least a little more updated. Shoulders rose and fell in a shrug, a single hand pulled out from his pockets to extend out and gently knock on the door. Although it was a lab, it was also the Professors home. He didn’t want to get on their bad side right away.

“Hello,” the dark haired man greeted in a low mono tone voice, “I was told to come here to get a starter pokemon. It’s Maverick, Maverick Ryder.” The phrase ‘starter pokemon’ felt weird coming out of his mouth, knowing that he has traveled the world and was actual quite familiar with all pokemon. Especially dark and dragon types, two favorites types. Yet, this was how is always started. And unlike many other regions Mav has been before, here he wasn’t allowed to bring any of his own pokemon.

“I hope I didn’t come too early,” the burnt scarred man added in after a moment or two of unresponsive silence. The same hand that knocked on the door retreated to allow his gaze to fall upon the watch attached to his wrist, taking a second to read the time before his hand returned to his pocket. He was only like ten minutes early from the time he was given, but early was still early. Hmmmmm…

When Mav entered the lab, it was a bustle of assistants scampering about. It looked...uh, like absolute chaos honestly. He probably had never been inside of a professor's lab where it looked like everyone was working double time after some unforeseen disaster. Did the professor forget to file a report or research paper and now they were scrambling? Did a pokemon escape? It was hard to tell. And as such, nobody paid him much heed at first. Though eventually one of the aids would spot him standing there awkwardly, and would scamper into the back. A minute later, a flustered man in a white coat and glasses came rushing up, juggling a phone and some papers.

His ID dangling from his neck.

Professor Elm was not the most impressive of men, but he was tall, his lean frame swallowed up by his coat. His face was a little flushed from what could be assumed was panic.

"Ah, hello, hello. You must be my...ah, ten? noon? I'm sorry, I have completely lost track of time. You're here for a pokemon, yes? I'm terribly sorry, but there's been a break in and our usual starters have been...ah, stolen." He looked absolutely crushed by that confession. "We do have pokemon available for you, just not the usual ones. I'm sorry...if that changes your mind about registering here today...I understand."

[attr="class","teethtext"]As soon as the doors opened and Mav stepped into the building, the burnt scarred man was met with what felt like utter chaos. Warm crimson colored orbs flickered from one semi worried yet focus face to the next, unable to get a true read of why they all seemed frazzled. In fact, they all seemed so hyper focused to even notice a the dark haired stranger standing awkwardly waiting for someone or something.

That was, until he made eye contact with one of them. It was hard not to look not so intimidating with his burn scars on his face without looking like a complete buffoon. The only thing Mav could think of doing was waving at the assistant in hopes that they would come help him. However, that didn’t seem to work. The assistant scampered off swiftly. Crap. They probably thought he was here to rub the place or something.

Luckily though, another gentlemen emerged into the scene from where the assistant ran off too. The new addition to the chaos wore the classic long white lab coat with, what Mav would assume, is an ID card dangling around his neck. Though, this man seemed just as flustered as everyone else. The creases in his brow gave it away, adjusting his glasses with one hand and juggling his device and papers in the other. The gentlemen spotted him, moving closer and began to speak.

“That… ahhh…” Maverick paused, gaze swept over the panic frenzy of people, “Explains a lot… I guess.” His gaze fell back upon the Professor, Mav’s own gaze reaction flat despite the utter chaos around them. “Yes. I’m Maverick. You must be the Professor here. I’m sorry to hear that someone broke into the lab. I hope you able to find the culprit soon.” It was all natural conversation response, something the Professor probably toned out with how much was going on around them. “What do you have available? If anything, I can borrow one to catch a wild pokemon quick then return it if you need to for others. I don’t mind.” If the traditional starters for this region weren’t available here, what else would they offer him?

Professor Elm had his hands full from the reports that had to be filed, to the many conversation with both camera crew and police officers alike. Officer Jenny’s bike leaned against the side of the establishment, evidence of her lurking somewhere on the perimeters, though perhaps just out of sight as she studied what proof remained of the wayward thief. “That’s very nice of you.” Professor Elm mused with a wide smile, using two fingers to push his wide glasses back up along the bridge of his nose. He shook his head with a slow sigh. “But you see…I’m afraid I can’t let you just borrow one. Every starter has to be registered to a trainer to leave our doors.”

Elm’s somber expression perked back up, like a coffee maker stuttering before spurting more water out over the beans to create a fresh pot. That didn’t mean that the first option was off the table, right? Surely there was still love for the traditional starters of Kanto that Oak sent over to Elm’s establishment in a quick haste to keep the other professor ready to help newly minted trainers along the beginnings of their journeys through the wilds of Johto. “Besides, Professor Oak is helping us out right now! I promise you, you won’t be hurting us by taking one of these as your starter.” Elm winked.

He disappeared in a blink and returned, nearly three identical balls in hand. One had a small sticker with a single water droplet on it, one had a small leaf on it, and the last had a small flame on it. Other than the stickers for identifying purposes, they were all carbon copy red-and-white spherical domes. He clicked them, releasing the trio of starters in the blink of an eye. They were quite unique from one another at a glance, given the rather strange disposition of each. “While it’s true you would expect them in Professor Oak’s lab instead of mine, surely you’ll agree that they make wonderful candidates as well?” Professor Elm queried.

”This little one is Bulbasaur.” The small plant pushed itself underneath a nearby desk. His eyes narrowed and his face wrinkled, a low growl emanating like a soft whisper from his lips. Two long vines slipped out from the large emerald bulb fixed upon his back and snapped in the air in warning. “They can be leery to trust at first, but make wonderful partners and grow fast! They’re probably the easiest to work with, once you’ve earned their trust.” Professor Elm explained, then glanced at a small blue turtle who immediately withdrew itself inside of its shell. Two lonesome eyes peered out, completely reluctant to meet Maverick. “That’s Squirtle. They can sometimes be pretty nervous and shy, and aren’t the quickest to grow but also aren’t the hardest to raise. They use their shells as their primary form of defense.”

The final? A gem of a Pokemon who immediately jumped up on the nearby desk and scarfed down a small bag of chips – bag and all. When a young assistant rushed to stop it, the wild fire lizard turned with a soft yawn and scorched her with a large flame, instantly causing her to back away and find other tasks to do. Almost mischievously, it hopped down and puffed small flames after the distrustful Bulbasaur, causing the other starter to lunge out from underneath the desk. Charmander might have given chase, too, before Professor Elm stopped it by physically blocking the creature, placing a heat-resistant shield up just in time to stop the flames from eating at his face. “And this guy here? Charmander. Quiet…charming starters indeed but definitely take the right trainer to raise them.” Elm laughed nervously.

[attr="class","teethtext"] For a split moment, Mav was disappointed in the response from the Professor. However, the further explanation on the topic of ‘just borrowing a pokemon’ did prove not a feasible option when put in that way. After all, there was no telling if said person would return or not. The Professor was giving rarer pokemon away for free to newcomers, having the decency to register said pokemon with the national database shouldn’t be an issue. If anything, the burnt scarred man should be thankful that the Professor did have substitute starters for him to pick from.

On that note, the gentlemen was quick to disappear to his office. Or at least, that’s what Maverick assumed. Warm crimson colored orbs flickered over the chaos that was still in motion around him, a brow rose when still none of them seemed bothered that he was here. But before Mav could question the assists anymore, the Professor returned and presented three identical iconic two toned sphere to him. A curious brow rose, wondering what kind of pokemon could be in them. This wasn’t the first time Mav was offered a starter alternative.

Each sphere was popped open one by one, the man in the white lab coat explaining each of them with the upmost professionalism Mav expected. Yet again, the burnt scarred man couldn’t help but be a little disappointed with the offers. Though, he didn’t show it on his face. In fact, the new trainer eyed both the bulbasaur and the charmander. Taking on a grass starter would be a first for him, grass types usually not really tickling his fancy. However, that charmander fiery spirit got his upmost attention. He does love a challenge.

“I’ll take the charmander,” the burnt scarred man mumbled, silently admiring the fire type, “I don’t mind a little bit of spice.” Mentally, Mav was giggling at his joke. Though, the man didn’t actual show it. What he did do though, was let his crimson colored orbs turn to the fire type addressing it with a hint of teasing in his tone. “That is, if you want to leave this place.”

The charmander was specially bred for this sort of thing. It was nursed and raised and trained for this very day, where it got to meet and be chosen by its future trainer. Leaving the lab was often the best day ever for a starter! (Though there WAS always variety in personalities, and some could be more lazy or grumpy about the whole affair) Thus when given the offer, the mischief making starter looked up at Mav with a twinkle in its eye and a chip between its claws. Crunch crunch. Its tail wagged a bit in contemplation as it considered the trainer that made the offer.

Before anyone could make any final decisions, there was a clamor and a screech. One of the aides screamed. Someone else shouted to get a net. Then, a streak of feather zoomed into the back of the lab and made itself at home on top of a bookshelf with a caw. 

"Oh dear. Not again," Elm sighed. "This spearow has been menacing my aides for the past week." He paused. "I know. Why don't you two sort out if you are a good match and battle that spearow together!" He discreetly passed Mav some pokeballs, "And if you decide to catch it..."

[attr="class","teethtext"] Everything happened so fast. One minute, Mav was attempting to convince the fiery charmander to come with him and leave the lab for good. The next, a freaking wild spearow has entered the chaos and began to add even more chaos. What luck?

A single brow rose, observing the all too familiar avian let out a series of screeches and soared through the lab like it owned the joint. Shouts and screams rang out, some aids ducking underneath anything they could fit under to hide while others seemed to be searching for a net of some sort. However, the wild pokemon was quick to retreat to the back room leaving assistance frantically frazzled by the turn of events.

Warm crimson gaze shifted to Professor Elm as he spoke, letting out a huff of a chuckle and taking the sphere offered. “Well… Guess we gotta start somewhere right.” The burnt scarred man’s gaze fell upon his new charmander, offering a sly smirk to the fire type. “What do you say? Feel up for a battle.” The fire type starter eyes lite up, the flame at the end of her tail burned brighter and larger at the thought. A devilish smirk spread across the fiery fire types lips, emitting a low growl. Mav let out a single chuckle. “Sounds like a yes to me.”

With the decision made, the new trainer and pokemon companion moved towards the back room dodging squirrelly aids along the way. And not a moment later, the pair passed the doorway into the room that wild pokemon disappeared to. Gaze swept the room, spotting the bird nestled on top of a bookshelf. Mav hummed to himself, suddenly realizing that his new fire type was in a very flammable room. “Hope you have a fire extinguisher Professor Elm,” the man shouted in hopes he could hear them, or maybe one of the aids, “Things might get hot in here.”

His gaze fell to the charmander, giving her a nod towards the wild spearow in hopes to encourage her to attack. He wanted to see what she already knew, what she was capably of, and to get to know her before barking commands. “Ready?” The fire type’s gaze fell upon the avian, a menacing GROWL rattled in her throat towards the spearow.

As soon as the Spearow heard Maverick speak it knew a battle was about to begin. It was also keenly aware that most new trainers would go on the offensive for their first move but as the young trainer gave his orders to Azula it did not sound like the attack he had chosen was an offensive option giving Spearow a chance to try a trick of it's own. It looked right into Azula's eyes and gave her a Leer she would never forget lowering her defense however not causing any physical harm to the young Charmander. As she slowly recovered her nerve from the horrifying leer she let out a menacing Growl to retaliate.

Professor Elm though still worried about any possible damage to his lab was quite intrigued by the results of the first round as neither Pokemon had resorted to a damaging move to start things off and their attacks had essentially cancelled one another out. " It is quite common for Spearow to try and scare their opponents into lowering their defenses but their aggression usually gets the better of them pretty quickly. I do hope whenever it does try something nothing important ends up in the line of fire."

Just as he finished speaking the Spearow had finally recovered enough of it's own move to prepare another attack. It was likely not too thrilled at getting growled at and certainly would not go too much longer without trying a more aggressive strategy. The only question that remained from the first round was which Pokemon would score the first damaging hit of the battle and who would have the upper hand after round two was over?

[attr="class","teethtext"]As soon as the fire type starter laid eyes on the pesky spearow, it casted them a mean mugging LEER. The nasty looking leer made the charmander tense up some, taking a step back to rethink if she wanted to engage with this nasty critter for not. However, Azula wasn’t the type to back down. Not now, not ever. This was her first battle, and like hell she was going to let a spearow of all pokemon make her change her mind. So once she gathered herself and attempted to shake off that look, it was time to put this avian in its place.

The charmander took in a deep breath, chest cavity expanded to its fullest compacity. The taste of sulfur was quick to tickle the back of her throat, heat built within seconds. And when it was ready to fire, Azura’s mouth burst open. Several balls of red hot lava bursted from her maw, her general aim was obviously for spearow with no concern of the flammable stuff that was around her.

Meanwhile, Mav observed from behind her as the Professor spoke. His nose crinkled in distaste, worried that if those EMBERs miss its target then a fire might break out in the lab. That wouldn’t be a good start to his trip through the region. He could see it now. Breaking news interrupting any shows on the television. A reporter outside of the lab, stating a new sketchy trainer and its rambunctious fire type set lab on fire. How will he ever pay for the distraction? Yeah. Not a good start.

The spearow did not, in fact, appreciate being growled at. When its intimidation tactics didn't quite work out, it decided to switch things up and get in the charmander's face. It shrieked out an aggressive battle cry, wings spread as it fluttered closer to the fire-lizard, scree'ing up a storm. Spearow were notorious for their bad behavior, but this one was oddly hesitant to lash out, as if it knew that doing so might invite more trouble than it was worth, so it was just trying to its best to be scary. However, scare tactics obviously were not paying off.

That darn lizard had a devilish smirk as it let loose a series of embers, forcing Elm to lurch and grab some paperwork off a nearby desk at the spearow let out an indignant cry and tried to dodge being scorched to bits! Those flames were quite difficult to avoid for it, however, since it was already too close, and thus it ended up a little more toasty than preferred! 

Uh oh. 

Now it looked MAD.
