As the Hisuian Arcanine leaped into action the mastermind behind the curse afflicting Chikorita appeared at the top of the shrine with a large Cheshire grin across it's face. It had fully expected that Freyja's Pokemon would try a super effective move and it was in the perfect position to counter such an attempt. " FOOL, did you really think you would catch me off guard? A lazy mutt such as yourself could never pull a fast one on me, now be a good doggie and take a nap while me and your owner have an adult conversation." Seconds later the Gengar's eyes turned blood red as the gaze caught the Hisuian Arcanine off guard. Within seconds the large canine started to tumble over when suddenly it managed to bite into the Lum Berry it was holding in the nick of time to counter the hypnotic waves. As the berry took effect Arcanine woke up and continued it's charge catching Gengar off guard as it did not think the canine would still be awake. As it bit down on the ghost's arm the Gengar screamed in pain flailing about like a madman. Unfortunately it's bravery would not be enough as this Gengar was no pushover and managed to bite into a Sitrus Berry to recover some health. " Useless mutt, I told you to take a nap, I guess I need a second Hypnosis to make you obey." Using a large amount of it's remaining energy Gengar was able to send another series of hypnotic waves at Arcanine again putting it in a deep slumber but this time without a Lum Berry to save it from the affliction. " Good doggie, now me and your pest of an owner can have a real conversation." Gengar then faced Freya who had now temporarily lost her canine guardian. The ghost chuckled before he laid out his demands. " You thought your would pull the wool over my eyes, didn't you? I am sorry to say it will take a better plan then that to stop me. Tell you what if you leave that Chikorita to me I will let you and your mutt leave this forest without further harm. Refuse however and I will give that mutt of yours a true taste of my power. Do we have a deal?" He then snickered likely having no real intention of keeping any promises hoping the young trainer would let her guard down. Wild Encounter

"Arcanine!" Freya found her breath hitching as the hound was put to sleep by hypnosis. Repeatedly. This gengar's aim with that sleep move was unreal. How did she get so unlucky that it managed to do that?! What could she do? She could get stuck in an endless sleep cycle if this kept up, her trying to wake Arcanine up as the ghost whittled away at him. And what if the ghost knew hex? That move was boosted by status, so if she tried to wait it out, more bad things could happen. What could she do...she had nothing faster than this ghost and her teddiursa, her other ace, probably couldn't bring this ghost down in one more hit.
However, she wasn't a champion trainer for nothing. She learned plenty in her days traveling Paldea, and that included how to pivot when desperate times called for it. "I'm sorry, Orthworm and Quaxly, but I need you to help me stop this gengar..." She got between Arcanine and the ghost, topaz eyes hard. She put on her best smirk to try to unnerve this cocky ghost. "You think that's all I got to stop you? A single hound? Ha! Don't make me laugh, evil spirit. I will purge you."
Freya threw her first pokeball to reveal a weak little orthworm. Likely barely half the gengar's level at best.
She had to provoke it into doing one of two things...playing with her so that it let her chip at it...or to start KO'ing her weaker pokemon. It was...not a tactic she was proud of, but if she lost her confidence now she would surely regret it later. So she kept up that grin and pointed at the Gengar, "Use mudslap on that fiend. See if it will hit any hypnosis' with mud on its face!" Of course switching in like this opened up her orthworm, left it vulnerable. She mentally apologized to her team. "I wonder if it even has an attacking move... Is that why you keep blabbering and putting pokemon to sleep? Because you can't do anything but run your stupid mouth?! Yap yap yap. Cmon, show me what you're capable of you freakshow. All this talk of soul stealing and yadda yadda and all you've done is make one of my pokemon go sleepy bye. Yaaaawn. Booooring."
Orthworm wasn't exactly sure why its trainer was taunting the terrifying gengar but...it would try to throw mud???

As Freya swapped out her Arcanine for the strangest looking Pokemon Gengar had ever seen the evil specter was filled with laughter. Not only was the creature hideous it was far lower level as well and Gengar knew it could toy with the creature for a bit before knocking it out. " Ha, ysuch a wimpy creature dares to stand against me, I guess you still have not learned you lesson with that useless mutt of yours to keep resisting. Let's see how that worm likes a taste of my Mean Look for starters." Gengar then gave the most terrifying look causing Orthworm to be unable to switch out as it was frozen in fear. As the defenseless Orthworm tried to prepare an attack Gengar had finally grown bored of the creature. As Freya had asked for a taste of it's real power Gengar was more than happy to oblige as it started to summon up a horrifying Hex before sending it towards Orthworm. " Fine you want a real taste of my power how is this Hex for you!" Seconds later the spell scored a direct hit sending Orthworm flying backwards before it could get off it's Mud-Slap. The hex was so strong that Orthworm was knocked out in a single blow. " Aw did that hurt? Blame your master for not taking the generous offer I made earlier. The gloves are coming off now young lady so I hope you brought your A game the rest of this battle or things will not end well for you. Heck maybe if you beg I will just make you one of my spirit army instead of destroying you outright just because I admire your bravery." Gengar then chuckled as it waited for Freya's next move. Unlike this round it would not get a free attack in so it would not have the luxury of toying with any of her stronger Pokemon next time. Wild Encounter

Freya was doing mental math as poor orthworm took a hit, confused and scared. She would have to comfort her poor pokemon later and apologize with lots of snacks to make up for that sack. It was just a fact of life that sometimes you had to make sacrifices for the greater success. She couldn't guarantee that the gengar would avoid attacking any given round, so trying to restore arcanine's sleep felt fruitless, especially when if she did so, the gengar might just knock him out again. So she had to rethink. Plan. Try a new thing out.
Teddiursa likely couldn't handle this gengar on her own. She wasn't as strong as arcanine, and with the berry the gengar ate, it looked too...healthy to be taken down in one blow. So she would need to keep pivoting, chipping away at the gengar's health just enough to give her teddiursa a chance of victory. Freya breathed out through her nose. She couldn't let the gengar in on her plan or it might just mess with her for fun. So she offered the ghost a strained smile and tilted up her chin with all the arrogance she could muster, "Ha. Join you and your spooks? Those pitiful little weaklings that we walked through to get this far? Not a chance, buddy. In fact, we're just getting warmed up here. Quaxly, why don't you show this big bully your aqua jet just to show it how serious we are."
Again, she silently apologized to her quaxly for what she was putting him through.
But the brave little duck strode forth, his chin thrust high. <I will protect you!> he declared to his trainer before covering himself in water and jetting forth even quicker than the speedy ghost would be able to manage. The power of priority. Freya kept her hand hovering over her teddiursa's pokeball. Ready. Prepared. Silently she willed quaxly to do his best. To just not miss and to chip away just enough of the gengar's health that teddiursa could end this.
However, she needed this ghost to not play with them. To strike her pokemon down fast and hard.
"You know what? I bet I can take you on with just ickle lil babies like quaxly here. You're so reliant on stuff like mean look and hypnosis...I bet that means you're just a coward deep down. Do you even know what it is like to battle with all your strength?! Ha. I bet you don't~"

As Gengar continued to wait for Freyja to send another piece of cannon fodder onto the field the evil specter nearly died a second time of laughter as the Quaxly ran up to face him. Such a weak little duck was barely worth him wasting a Hex on or so he initially thought before suddenly seeing it run towards him spraying out a jet of water to greatly boost it's speed. Quaxly scored a direct hit but Gengar hardly reacted as the huge level gap meant Aqua Jet did not do a huge amount of damage. Still it annoyed him to no end as he spoke again. " So you like to use your element to your advantage to outpace me eh? You might be fast when using it but a fat, ugly duckling such as yourself is not so quick on the rebound. Take this Hex and join that worm in it's suffering." Seconds later another powerful Hex flew towards Quaxly who had no hope of dodging such a powerful move from the higher level Gengar and as soon as the attack landed it had the same result as last time knocking Quaxly out in a single blow. Seeing another pest go down filled Gengar with glee even with Freyja mocking him. " A coward? Ha!, you are the one who tried to hide behind a useless mutt! I did not even toy with your poest this round and still easily won. You have yet to even see my true power as so far you have not been worth going all out on. I so hope you have more than just these weaklings on hand or else all hope shall soon be lost for you. Now send out another wimp so I can send them packing before I grow any more bored of you than I already am." The evil spirit then smiled again with an evil, Cheshire grin daring Freyja to do better. When quaxly was knocked out, everything lined up.
Freya scooped up her friend and peered down at his brave but confused face. He wanted to protect her, to show how strong he was, and he was taken down so easily. "Don't worry, my friend, I will be okay. We will all be okay. I've got this covered. You and Orthworm did great." She returned him to his ball and kept up her cocky demeanor towards gengar, "Heh. Hahaha! You played right into my hand, you arrogant spook!" Topaz eyes glittered and gleamed, sharp and dangerous as a feline's in the dappled shadows. She brushed back her bangs and gave her hair a little flip.
Behind her, Lola looked confused and concerned, but did her best to trust the young trainer who claimed she defeated the champion in Paldea before coming here.
"I've fought much stronger foes than you. But I knew that your arrogance would be your downfall. It's time. Teddiursa, you're up!" She sent the little bear forth and she stood there, eyes narrow and teeth bared. Tiny and unimposing but trying to be scary. "You've handled every other ghost before now, so why don't you show this one your crunch!" If she did her mental math right, that aqua jet from quaxly would have weakened this ghost just enough that her teddi could bite through the gengar's frail defenses. This battle would have been long over if not for that second hypnosis hit on Arcanine, but because of that, she had to pivot and get real creative. The kind of creative that allowed for the weaker teddiursa to really shine right now!
She didn't look like much now, but one day she'd be a powerful Ursaring. And that showed in her tremendous strength despite her minute size. In her veins ran the blood of many generations of Ursaring, perhaps going so far back that her ancestors were once able to evolve into Ursaluna. So. Freya entrusted her with this battle. In obtaining them victory. Teddi couldn't handle two hits, not if this Gengar got serious with a special move, and she was just as vulnerable to a double hypnosis hit. So she had to end this in one. In a single crunch.
Please. Let this end.
Teddiursa lunged for the gengar. She was ready to chomp her way through this ghost to banish it forever from this shrine!

"A puny Teddiursa? I can spit on them and melt your furs. Keekekekeke." The Gengar giggled manically, and hovered above the Teddiursa with eyes staring down on her. Then, it gurgled up a stinky sludge of poison and spat at the normal type. The young cub winced and cried out loud in pain from the Acid Spray, but managed to brushed them off or shook them off. Then, she waited for the right moment to jump and bite on the spooky ghost with her sharp teeth. The Gengar yelped in a loud scream as the crunch took the rest of the Gengar's stamina. The duo type's screams faded into nothingness, as the ghost type's presence also faded. The Ilex Forest could feel a weight lifted off it. Some flying Pokemon wrote each other a love songs again as they chirped. Bug Pokemon with wings could be seen flying freely again in the background without spectral presence harassing them. Then, the forest shrine glowed green and then a Celebi appeared. Oh right, the cursed Chikorita! The mythical Pokemon fluttered down and tapped on the Chikorita. The pained grass type looked very well and alive as the curse was lifted. If Freya wanted to capture this grass type, now would be a good chance. The Celebi playfully danced in the air around Freya for a bit before waving goodbye and fluttered away, either to other parts of the forest or other times of the forest. Wild Encounter
