Sunstone Hotel and Apartments
Lost in the sprawling metropolis of Goldenrod City is a weathered apartment block carved from sunbaked brick called the Sunstone. Its facade, once the hue of a desert sunset, now bears the scars of time and the relentless march of industry, blending streaks of soot with flaking paint dulled by countless sunrises. Above, towering chrome and glass skyscrapers loom over its forgotten grandeur only to fade like ghostly apparitions into the murky atmosphere. Milky windows, some boarded shut, stare down like vacant eyes at the street below while fire escapes lattice the exterior like a tangled iron vine. Mismatched laundry flutters on lines strung between balconies, offering fleeting glimpses into the lives of unseen residents. In the distance, neon lights and holographic advertisements flicker, their glow barely visible through the haze. The Magnet Train, a silver serpent on an elevated steel spine, zips by with a quiet, futuristic hum near the building's base where narrow alleyways choked with overflowing dumpsters and windblown detritus, snake away like festering wounds, mirroring the city's struggle to breathe beneath the billowing plumes of sickly yellow smog. |
On the roof, a surprising oasis emerges – a patch of defiant green against the city's grimy grip. A row of terracotta pots lie huddled along the parapet wall filled with dusty herbs and berry bushes; their harvest desiccated under a relentless sun. At the centre of the roof terrace, a lone honey tree bulges out of its wooden half wine barrel container which groans under its weight. Despite foliage now flecked with dust and sun-bleached to a pale lime, the honey tree stubbornly produces. Here and there, amongst its leaves, peek clusters of spent blooms, waxy and brown, while a sticky glob of amber clings precariously to a branch. A solitary Combee drones industriously in its pre-programmed search for pollen.
Inside the building, a rickety elevator groans with each floor it ascends, a mechanical sigh that echoes through its shaft. The interior is lined with moth-eaten velvet and its once-polished buttons are now dull and unresponsive. The ride up is accompanied by unsettling shudders and clangs. The hallways of the Sunstone are long and narrow, dimly lit by flickering overhead lights. Faded wallpaper peels away in places, revealing the bare plaster beneath. The doors to the apartments and hotel rooms are solid wood, each with a tarnished brass number plate. The higher floors, where the penthouse suites are located, offer a sense of exclusivity and importance despite the building's worn state.
But the real mystery lies within the walls themselves. The inhabitants of the Sunstone are an enigma. They come and go with an air of secrecy, their faces obscured by shadows and fedoras pulled low. Faint melodies carried on a draft seep through walls and ventilation shafts – fragments of lives lived in solitude. Rumours swirl amongst the tenants, whispering of a hidden network that operates within the Sunstone's walls, clandestine meetings held behind locked doors and transient guests who vanish without a trace, their rooms left untouched, belongings undisturbed. Unexplained lights flicker in the vacant upper floors and the clatter of unseen movement disturbs the silence of the night. The Sunstone, a place where the past, present and future blur, beckons visitors with the promise of secrets waiting to be unravelled. But for the curious soul who dares to delve deeper, the question remains: are the secrets unearthed the truth or merely another layer of the mystery?
