The hands of time floated on the winds of change, slowly transforming the world around him. Zaiden traipsed through Goldenrod on the telltale pathways towards Goldenrod’s infamous Bug Catching Contest once more and marveled at the new houses propping up on the open streets. Some of them were placed along historic districts where laws and regulations hadn’t yet formed to keep them held tightly at bay from transforming the older houses into modern copycats.

As he approached the front gates to the contest, a large man stepped out from the shadows to block his path. The man was two decades Zaiden’s senior, with patches of hair combed over to hide balding areas where their once precious locks were long since shed. Two thick arms like clubs crossed over the guard’s chest. Freeing one hand, the older man snapped and held out a single hand, instantly transforming into one of the sweetest and friendliest faces Zaiden could hope to see once he’d handed over his ticket into the contest.

“There’s Rockets lurking about, kid.” A hiss traveled underneath the guard’s voice and dripped in every syllable. “And remember, you can only keep one. Don’t let me find out you snuck out two. Some Bug Catcher did last year and he’s still paying the price.” The guard snorted, opening the doors as he allowed Zaiden to pass through them. Zaiden squeaked, eyes staring worriedly at the imposing giant, and easily etched his way around the burly man’s frame.

He was here! After all the time that passed and years that came and went, he was here! And while he’d been here many, many times before, it never seemed to grow old. Zaiden’s eyes watered with delight. He called Kanja out of her ball and together, they traveled through the tall emerald grasses in their pursuit for the next coolest bug he could hope to find. What might it be, lost to the tangle of tall grass all around them? He had to hope for something better than the Paras and the Venonat that crawled through the grasses around them.

Lost to the wonder of it all, Zaiden rushed through the tangle of tall grasses in quick pursuit of the first thing he could find. Something wiggled, hidden by its shamrock hues plastered in a sea of emerald and parakeet tones. Kanja was the first to react, immediately jumping over herself as she floated away from the tall grasses towards the paved path. What in the world was this Metapod thinking?! The murderous intentions of her adversary flashed before her eyes, moments when it attacked innocent Scatterbugs and Wurmples before evolution took its hold.

“How could you be so cruel?!” The small Pokémon screeched, hands smacking the sides of her eyes. Her usually hidden eyes widened like saucers and poked out from underneath her bright green ‘hair’. She rocked, large red rocks twisting and turning, and searched all about her for signs of anything else. Metapod just laughed, wiggling about as it tried its best to crawl after her. Its eyes glistened, and the thoughts that followed shook Kanja to her core. “None of them were deserving of the life they had. I helped them out of it. That’s all.” Metapod exclaimed boldly.

Zaiden stepped in front of Kanja’s hasty attempt to escape and tapped her to get her to turn around. She spun with a loud gulp. Did Zaiden just not understand what they were facing?! The kind of Pokémon he was asking her to face?! She stared up at him horrified. “It’s ok, Kanja.” Zaiden insisted, causing Kanja to sign woefully with a shake of her head. She held up her hands and focused, managing to shoot out a blast of psychic energy. She aimed her attack at Metapod and tried to pick it up to toss it about, hopefully with enough force to send it flying far away from herself.

The small cocoon closed its eyes and focused inward on its own thoughts. Blood spilled across the soft green blades of grass inside of its inner world, where countless bugs ran away in terror. They screamed at the top of their lungs, pleading for mercy though none would be granted to them. In these visions, Metapod was a rather diabolical and devious Caterpie, with many legs that allowed him to pursue and chase his victims down with ease.

Kanja focused her mind and used her mental powers to pick the small cocoon up. She spun him around in the air wildly, then tossed him several feet through the tall green grasses. These visions were too much to bear! Her heart raced in her chest, causing goose bumps to rise up on her skin. What kind of horrible monster was this bug?! She slammed its body into several trees repeatedly, though it seemed to cling on.\

“See that?” Metapod mocked, one eye opening with a wide smile. It was a strange smile; one that promised certain doom and terror for any that witnessed it. “You can’t break me even if you try! Neither could the other bugs.” In her panic-stricken form, all Kanja could do was yell in a shrill voice. “SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP! It’s not right, what you’ve done to others! THEY DIDN’T DESERVE IT!” She tried once more to pick the small bug up with her psychic powers and toss it far off through the field.

Even after Kanja finally managed to send Metapod flying off into the distance, she couldn’t remove the intrusive thoughts that lingered inside of her mind. What unspeakable horrors would it cause the next Pokemon it ran into? Eyes wide and stricken with panic, she raced off through the tall grasses and tangle of wild weeds in pursuit of Metapod. She had to end things here and now, before someone else found themselves the unlucky victim in the sinister bug’s world.

They stumbled - Zaiden chasing close behind his psychic friend – onto the scene of another battle. A familiar looking green chrysalis beaten to a pulp by a large alligator spewing thick flames from the tip of its tongue easily scorched it. Only ashes littered the ground where it once stood, a quick reminder of the karmic balance of the universe. The small bird made out of flames danced on the tip of the fire-based alligator’s snout cheerfully, celebrating their successive victory. “I already have a Scyther! Hey, what do you have?” The kid turned to Zaiden with a wide smirk, holding up a Sport Ball in one hand.

Zaiden shied away. His eyes flooded the ground underneath his foot whilst one hand rubbed the back of his neck nervously. He didn’t have anything yet – there hadn’t been a bug Pokemon he found worthwhile enough to catch. “N-nothing…” Zaiden admitted with a soft gulp. Most of this was luck anyways, since you never knew what Pokemon you would stumble upon next. The other kid scoffed with a loud, crass laugh. “Oh, really?! I guess we know who will be taking home that first place prize then, huh?!” He scoffed, turning on his heels and scurrying off through the tall grasses.

Zaiden shrugged. He wasn’t here to collect the best prizes from the event, though that was a nice bonus in itself. There were rumors of some very rare and exotic bugs he’d never seen before. He wanted to hunt them down by scouring the grass every chance he got, in hopes that he might spot one of them lurking between the blades. “I already have a Scyther anyways.” Zaiden commented underneath his breath with a nonchalant shrug. He, too, would turn back and began pacing his way through the tall grasses in hopes of finding something worthwhile.

Eyes whose hues were as rich and almost deep as tsernoziom widened. Zaiden’s head spun wildly around and hunted through the tangle of weeds fighting against the tall grasses for their space within the National Park. He noticed not from the grass, but instead from a nearby tree where a large nest nestled against a thick trunk, a large wasp swoop down. It beat its wings against the gentle breeze and pumped its large stingers in the air, their tips dripping with a familiar poisonous liquid Zaiden knew they did not want to tangle with.

He backed up, eyes turning to Kanja who hopped in front of her trainer protectively. Though Zaiden felt as though he’d been chased by Beedrill near-constantly in past events, he’d only met with one formidable wasp whose powerful stingers easily felled his brightly colored and very brave sparrow. Hageshii, a friend Zaiden missed dearly since switching his teams around after his earlier travels along the beginning routes of Johto, tried his best to withstand the large bug and failed.

“Please put it to sleep.” Zaiden turned to the horned humanoid Pokemon placed between himself and the large yellow jacket. Kanja nodded, turning her attention to Beedrill as she raised her hands up into the air. She focused, waving them with a strange and hypnotic trance, and hoped she could slowly lure the other Pokemon into a sweet slumber. “Hey there! We don’t want too much trouble. Why don’t you take a quick nap?” She offered.

Zaiden quickly pulled out one of the many park Balls they supplied him with. He needed to time his toss right, if he hoped to capture the wild wasp before it had the chance to knock out his Pokemon. Beedrill were highly aggressive, with a tenacity that wouldn’t quit. If he failed – especially too many times whilst the wild bug remained wide awake – it could spell certain doom for their plans altogether. He tossed the ball in a hurry, hoping that he’d timed it just perfectly so.

Autumn brought with it a time of changes, where trainers piled in through the double doors in hot pursuit of every bug they could catch. Some of them battled against metallic ants whose sharp pincers snapped at the soft flesh of their toes. Others incinerated flying moths to ashes, leaving the critically wounded bodies to litter the tall grasses around them. And still others – such as Zaiden himself – found themselves at odds with large wasps, their Pokemon scooped up into their hands.

He raced through the tall grasses at the top of his heels, dodging around other trainers and their Pokemon. Beedrill was fast, stinging the sides of his pants, just barely missing Zaiden’s flesh in the process. Zaiden yelped, jumping a foot in the air, and kicked up the speed at which he ran. His heart raced inside of his chest. Was he going to be able to escape with his life? With Kanja’s life? He needed to!

He turned, twisting in erratic patterns through the tall grasses, and ducked behind the side of the large water fountain. Zaiden could still hear the buzzing of Beedrill’s wings nearby as it stopped and searched for its foe. Time etched on, and soon the buzzing faded, once the wild Pokemon gave up the ghost. He turned to his small Pokemon and placed her on the ground beside himself, quickly digging out a few items to heal her up. She had to be alright! She just had too!

Zaiden pulled out a small bag of delectable food. A staple of Pewter town, the crunchies were delicious edibles that were known to help Pokemon recover from non-volatile conditions once they were consumed. Tearing it open, Zaiden passed it over to Kanja, who greedily consumed the entire bag. Afterward, Zaiden pulled out a small bottle of medicine and sprayed his Pokemon from head to toe, healing all of her wounds with ease. While they rested, Zaiden checked around the area, making sure the coast was clear of the deadly wasp.

Something stirred in the tall green grasses, causing Zaiden to pause and stare down. It waS a familiar looking chrysalis, though the last one they’d met was a bit different. He couldn’t place his finger on it, though. Maybe it had less scars layered over its tough exoskeleton? Or it was a brighter green than the one he stared at before him? Whatever the case may be, it was a welcomed change from the previous wasp that chased them throughout the park.

Kanja stepped out and smiled. The emotions that emanated from this small Metapod’s shell filled her with hope and happiness. It was a striking difference when compared to the last Metapod she met. Memories of this Metapod playing with other Caterpie just before its evolution, and even knocking them out of the way when predatory birds were near to try and sacrifice itself flooded her mind. “Stay back!” It screamed, focusing all its energy on being the toughest and strongest cocoon there was. “I won’t let you hurt my friends!”

Kanja hummed, shaking her head. “I don’t want to hurt you or your friends.” She promised. When a rogue Charmander ran past, spewing flames from the tip of its lips over everything it could, Kanja immediately jumped out of the way. “Hey, watch out!” She cried loudly, focusing her time and energy into trying to lift the small chrysalis up with her psychic powers. Whilst hopefully toting it about should her move be successful, she hurriedly looked around for a safe place to leave the friendly bug.

Kanja smiled, letting out a breath of relief as she noticed a safe patch of grass. She placed the small bug down and patted it on top of its shell. Metapod focused, trying its best to make itself as hard and indestructible as it possibly could. When she released her hold on Metapod, the small bug looked up with a slightly confused look. “Thank you, kind one.” It commented, then shuffled off into the wild grasses somewhere into the distance.

“You’re welcome.” Kanja waved goodbye. Kanja’s body began glow with a stange light. She could feel this immense amount of energy bursting inside of her inner core. Her arms stretched out, growing longer on her body. Two long, green legs sprouted from underneath her short body, allowing her to spin and dance on them freely. The white lower half fluffed out, reminiscent of a skirt, and her horns curved with a long, wide stretch across her head.

Zaiden smiled, pleased with the new form that his small Pokemon took on. “You look amazing, Kanja!” He congratulated her. He could hardly believe his eyes. Maybe now, she had a fighting chance against the stronger and tougher bugs lurking in the thick grasses around them. After some time of her testing her new form, hopping and jumping about, Zaiden nodded and led the way around the National Park once more.

Time was almost up for them, though he was positive that they would find something worthwhile. Surely, there were more bugs lurking in the tall grasses than angry bees and small chrysalis? As much as he hated some of the bugs he’d ran across in previous catching contests, this one was turning out to be another let down as well. Luck. It was about luck. And he’d had his day in the sun, where he won a Bug Catch Contest, once before. He couldn’t win them all, after all. So maybe…if this was as good as they got… he'd learn to accept it?
