A strange looking bug whose large eyes looked almost like glasses crawled out of the thick grass. Zaiden hummed, tilting his head thoughtfully, and tried to remember where he’d seen the bug before. Something spurred in the back of his mind, pulling on vague memories he would have otherwise forgotten. When the all-too-familiar image of his ramshackle daycare flickered into focus, he nodded with a quiet understanding. He’d recently hatched one of them – who turned out to have a specialized move all on its own.

Would this one be like his, having its own specialized move? Given that it was found in the wild, it was unlikely, but such strange happenings have occurred before. Especially around Springtime, when most of the newly hatched Pokemon were crawling out of their eggs to greet the new world around them. “Maybe we should leave this bug for someone else?” Zaiden asked himself softly, not really sure if it was worth the hassle to battle or capture it.

Kanja moved in swift, dancing on the tips of her nimble feet. “Hello there, new friend!” She extended an arm out in a playful greeting. Blipbug scoffed, turning away with a shrug. Who did this stranger think she was? Clearly, she was no one of importance. It wanted to conduct research on the strongest Pokemon owned by the trainers that visited the tall grasses of the National Park – not some washed up has-been. “Sorry, I have better things to do.” It huffed firmly.


Kanja tried to reach out to it with her psychic powers. The energy lifted off of her and fled over to Blipbug, building a wall to try and pick Blipbug up. “You…don’t have to be rude, you know…” Kanja stated flatly. What was up with this bug, anyways? She didn’t really understand. It wasn’t like she was trying to be mean and burn it to a crisp, like some of the fire-based mons were doing around them. And it wasn’t like she was insulting it or its worth, either, like some trainers were doing when they commented on the common finds they stumbled upon. So, why was Blipbug being mean?

It was a strange happenstance that his Pokemon communicated with the small caterpillar, who only turned away with a simple shake of its head. Kanja continued, chastising the small bug, until it lashed out and struck her on the side. She reared back, an angry growl crawling off her tongue, and sighed heavily. “Fine, whatever. Have it your way, then.” Kanja snapped, tossing the bug off through the tangle of tall grasses with a loud huff.

Some of the contestants were already beginning to return back to the main lobby. Was time nearly up? Zaiden turned to his watch with a squeak and a firm shake of his head. It was nearly over! He spent most of the adventure letting Kanja converse with the bugs in the wild grasses, hardly managing to pick one out to capture for himself. Was it truly an event if he didn’t give his all, though?

Zaiden gave a loud, sharp whistle. It caught Kanja’s attention. She spun on the tips of her toes like a dainty ballerina and hopped off to follow her trainer on their quest to seek out more of these strange creatures. “Hopefully, the next one will be nicer.” Kanja grumbled, still a little sour that two of the bugs she’d met so far were pretty mean. At least they weren’t all ungrateful or homicidal maniacs, though! There was the sweet Metapod she’d met who only wanted to protect those he loved dearly.

Zaiden gulped when he spotted another large bee crawling out of a nearby tree. It looked murderous, with an intent to take Kanja and Zaiden off the census. Instinct screamed to snatch her up and run. They weren’t going to get yeeted from the event that easy! But Zaiden had like, no bug at all for the contest. Which meant that he had to at least try to catch this illusive little stinger.

Kanja nodded, reading her trainer’s thoughts. Why he wanted this discount Yellow Jacket from Aisle 9, she would never know. The least she could do was help the cause, though. Psychic energy surged from her fingertips towards Mr. Stinger and his Punk-esque phase of Fear Me, Bro to try and lull him to sleep. Surely, Beedrill wanted to slip off into a peaceful wonderland? Sleep, my dear friend, sleep.

Even as fear gripped Zaiden’s heart and squeezed it tightly, causing him to choke on the very air he breathed, he smiled. They finally managed to lull the dangerous wasp into a deep slumber. Beedrill sagged in the air, wobbly erratically on its translucent wings as it struggled to remain airborne. In short order, Beedrill landed, curled up into a tight ball, and closed it eyes. It allowed sleep to claim its form, whispering softly in the large wasp’s ears why it needn’t worry about the battle at hand.

Kanja stood poised and still. She was ready, hands lifted up in preparation to send another blast of psychic energy from her fingertips. Would it be necessary? Soft eyes full of strange wonder turned and stared up at Zaiden, who shook his head quietly with a gentle smile. Her trainer had other ideas? Kanja backed up and lowered her hands to her sides. She didn’t quite understand what sort of strange fascination her trainer must have with this beast, but she respected his decision all the same.

Zaiden pulled out a small ball and pressed the button in its center with a soft click. He needed to be careful. If this failed, there was a good chance that they would find themselves in a headlong chase as the giant wasp readied itself for another quick jab of its powerful stingers in haste to take Kanja and Zaiden out. With a weak prayer to Arceus, and hope that steeled in the pit of his chest, Zaiden tossed the Sport Ball after the large wasp.

That didn’t work out well in Zaiden’s favor. As soon as the large wasp escaped from the Sport Ball, Zaiden grimaced. Not only that, but even though the round with the Sport Ball seemed like the only round Beedrill would sleep through, it didn’t wake up until its turn to attack the very next round. This was already a frustrating setup - facing a bug he’d once faced before, and one that historically made the competition a nightmare of a challenge unless you just wiped it out completely. Still, Zaiden didn’t want to return from the games emptyhanded.

Kanja raised her arms up once more and began waving them in the air. Rings of hypnotic energy shot from the tips of her fingers, aimed directly for Beedrill in hopes that she could lure the large beast back to sleep once more. If it worked once for her, couldn’t it work again? There was hope, even if it was a tiny sliver. Though she wasn’t quite sure why, her trainer seemed taken by the large wasp. “You could join us on our adventures, you know.” She tried to persuade the large wasp.

Beedrill clicked its large stingers together and laughed. Join them? Was this some kind of My Little Pony crossover?! This was Beedrill’s home they were talking about! If anything, he would teach them a nasty lesson by chasing them clear out of the park! Zaiden prepped the next Sport Ball, hoping to make a successful capture before his Pokemon was seriously injured by the large wasp. He hoped and pleaded quietly inside of his head that this would work. With a click of a button, Zaiden tossed the Sport Ball after the large Beedrill.
