At last, she reached the trial location.
With a wooden token in hand, Freya approached the entrance of the notable Dark Cave of Violet City. Unlike in Union Cave, there were no signs of lights being strung up for visitors by construction crews, just the wide and craggy maw filled with an imposing black void. Topaz eyes gleamed in the sparse light of dusk, as she had come here late in the evening as the sun started to set and cast a moody hue upon the world below. It was chilly—her breath fogged around her mouth as the temperature started its rapid drop with the rise of the moon.
She tucked a streak of blue hair behind her ear and considered the scene. There was little option but to continue forward from the way she saw it. Once reaching the mouth of the cave, she held out the token, curious as to what would come next, and to her surprise, a small pokemon emerged.
"A ralts?" Freya queried. Was this part of her trial? Would it attack her? No. That wasn't it. The token in her hands began to glow before vanishing in a flash of white.
"Your trial will commence once you step foot in the cave. Its darkness will consume you and all you take with you. There is no hiding; no escape. The powerful will turn and the group must survive. Once begun the only way out is to reach the pedestal and take control of the darkness, or succumb to it."
Her breath caught.
"I understand," Freya murmured solemnly. "I am ready." Though as she stepped forward to follow the little ralts into the cave she felt something...familiar. Oppressive and eerie. "..." She made a sign against evil on her chest and withdrew the sutra she found in the woods when freeing the forest spirit, Celebi, from the clutches of a corrupted gengar. "I do not know what lays ahead, guide, but I have crossed paths with evil before. The kind that can curse the very heart and soul of a forest. This feels much like that evil."
Freya breathed out and kept walking. She brought only three pokemon with her, as per the rules of every trial thus far. She hoped it would be enough to secure another victory and another totem amulet. But what could possibly be causing this horrible feeling of corruption in here?!

The small humanoid Pokemo stared up at Freya with strange eyes that never wavered nor blinked. They considered her words carefully, raising one hand up at their sides. From the tip of a single finger, Ralts created a small ball of electric energy. The electricity pulsated around the large ball, shedding light on the dark caves and their vast, maze-like tunnels stretching in every which direction from its mouth. It only nodded, turning its head towards the pathways along the dark inner tunnels, and motioned for Freya to follow alongside. Once she picked up her pace and kept after Ralts, it would slowly and surely continue its conversation inside of her mind. Though its mouth did not move, quietness remaining the one, true constant to the outsider peering in, Freya could hear every word as a clearly formed thought as though she’d crafted it herself in her own mind. “The darkness that succumbs these caves has laid a grievous curse on the area entirely. Malevolent spirits lurk within this darkness. Malevolent spirits who wish to steal the souls of others and encase them in its living tomb.” Ralts hummed telepathetically. It stopped for a moment and turned thoughtfully to Freya. “I sense the Cleanse Tag on you.” It would then jump at her and very greedily search for Freya’s tag. Should she allow it or simply not react fast enough to stop it, Ralts would pluck the Cleanse Tag off her and hold it up with a hopeful expression. “This shall help us tremendously! If you’ll allow me… I can use this tag to ensure that I am able to keep as much of the evil’s presence away as possible. It might not be enough on its own, but it should help us tremendously along the way.” Ralts insisted. Let Ralts 'borrow' your Cleanse Tag? Or refuse and choose to take on the quest without Cleanse Tag effects?

Malevolent spirits that wished to entrap her in an eternal tomb? Yep. Sounded about right. "I sometimes wonder what brings about such corruption in the hearts of men and pokemon," she murmured. "Is it possible for a pokemon to be born evil and full of hatred? I know it is possible for them to do terrible things with hearts full of malice, they are sapient beings after all. But usually it is because they have been hurt or at best they do what they must to survive and their actions are deemed evil by humans because they are harmful."
The darkness was overbearing.
She drew in a slow breath.
"The evil I encountered before was a gengar. It had minions that heeded its command that attacked me at every turn as I attempted to find a way to awaken the forest spirit that was sleeping in the shrine deep in Ilex." She startled when the ralts leapt up and swiped the sutra from her hands. "Cleanse tag? That is what it is called? The spirits seemed endless after I found it, like they could sense its presence. But I warded them off and used it at the shrine...where the gengar I mentioned before was lurking. It leapt out of the shrine and challenged me to a battle and threatened to keep my soul forever. It was so powerful...I knew there was no fleeing the fight." She shivered. "But once it was defeated...the very air became easier to breathe. And I swear it on my soul...Celebi itself rose from the shrine to heal the sick pokemon I had in my care."
She felt a little empty-handed without it.
"You can use it if it will be helpful to us on this journey. I think you are the first guide on one of these trials that has stayed with me to actually guide me." Freya looked ahead. "Can you tell me how the cleanse tag will help us? Will it in someway help with the darkness or relieve the feeling of...otherness in this place?" She rubbed her arms, glancing around. Shiver.
Freya was expecting some pokemon to leap out at her at any moment. Surely there was more to this than a long and spooky walk to the the final room where the totem pokemon lurked. She was looking for the twist. The trial. The catch to it all that made it difficult.

Ralts listened to Freya’s ramblings intently. It was not the first time that Ralts learned about the malevolent spirits that haunted Ilex. They were numerous, always spawning more where the last spirits were once released from their eternal damnation. “These tales are familiar to me.” Ralts spoke telepathetically. The light Ralts shone through the dark abyss surrounding them bounced off the walls. Large shadows with invisible, jagged teeth coated those very walls, as though something lurked beyond the shadows. Waiting… Watching… Ever ready to snag her alive… “I believe Spiritomb has some mischief to play. It controls the many spirits that inhabit its ethereal form. Most clamor for a freedom they can never achieve.” Ralts stopped, its eyes widened with worry, and stared into the distance. “Not that way…no…” Ralts spun around and headed down a different tunnel, hurriedly waving for Freya to keep up. It was at this point that Ralts’ speed would pick up. It was practically racing through the tunnels, into the first chamber where it collapsed before the large temple. “STAY BACK! BY THE POWER OF THIS CLEANSE TAG AND ALL THE BLESSINGS STORED WITHIN IT, STAY BACK!”The shadows circled around Freya like black flames, jumping in erratic patterns. They laughed as many voices. Sometimes, eyes would populate the mass. Just thousands of eyes, all blinking and staring in different directions. A voice cried for freedom, another threatened death. Each fought and bickered against each other to remain the victor. “These tags are made by spiritual beings bestowed with certain mystical powers. You humans might call them ‘shamans’ or ‘seers’. They have the power to seal spirits in otherwise mundane objects or to chase them out of places where they don’t belong. It’s…not working…like I hoped!” Suddenly, the strange darkness swarmed Freya all at once. It slipped into one of her Poke Balls. The ball rocked wildly, before plopping off Freya’s belt and falling to the ground with a loud clatter. Pawmot would come bursting out, her eyes looking bloodthirsty and strange altogether. She turned, ears pinned against her skull, lips curled into a nasty snarl and hissed loudly. “It’s overtaken your friend! You need to help soothe her soul and knock the sense back into her before it uses her body to take your very life!” Ralts warned just as Pawmot leaped at Freya, eager to try and rip her to shreds. Freya's Pawmot is attacking! Level 27. Who will Freya use to help Pawmot regain herself?

"A spiritomb?" Freya echoed. She had heard of that pokemon before. Some reported seeing them in ruins—she herself believed she spotted the ghastly spirit on the top of one of the mountains. She didn't stray from the path she was on to trudge into the distance during that blustering hike. Freya had enough sense to not wander when it was possible to get lost and lose her life in the blistering cold.
She did not know too much about them exactly as pokemon. There were rumors and folk tales about them, but the fine line between fact and fiction was often blurry. They were said to be the amalgamation of 108 spirits and their mischief in era's past lead to them being bound to an odd keystone. Some claimed that spirtomb was merely a misunderstood pokemon, like most ghosts, while others insisted that it was actually evil. That the spirits that composed them were all malevolent or criminal in some fashion, and when combined together, they were a ball of foul misfortune.
"I see. I will be cautious. It wouldn't do to be tricked by one of those many spirits that you mentioned," Freya agreed quietly, nodding her head as she kept an eye on the shadows that started to roil. The ralts suddenly began to shout, as if trying to banish the evil that surrounded them. When that did not fully work, the mass of many eyes and grinning fangs closed in. She shielded herself, oblivious to what was about to happen next.
The shadow crept into her pokeball and possessed Pawmot!
Her loyal companion leapt from her ball, all bared teeth and ready electricity. Freya swore, her eyes wide with shock. Was this what the Ralts meant in its earlier warning about allies turning against each other?
"Pawmot. Please, shake it off. This isn't like you," Freya cried out, dodging to the side, nearly throwing herself to the ground to avoid being mauled by the feral rodent. "I'm sorry about this but...Star! I need you to knock some sense into Pawmot! Use moonblast until she goes down."
Star emerged from her ball with a cheerful cry and stared curiously at the Pawmot. Hm. Very well! She would do her best. She summoned a ball of energy to her palm as she watched her foe, awaiting her next action. And when the time was right, she would launch the powerful blast of energy at her companion.

The Pawmot obviously wasn't listening to her trainer's plea. When was the last time a possessed Pokemon was actually benevolent? The electric Pokemon glared with aggression in her eyes, and charged up electricity, ramming into the Clefable who had just withstand the Wild Charge. That hit was a shockingly powerful one, but Star was able to summon a powerful blast with the power of the moon. The aura glowed in pink hue and exploded in the Pawmot's direction. The possessed Pokemon had been weakened and also calmed. "That... was quick! Wow. Your Pokemon are strong. I can revive your fallen Pawmot, as much as I could. You might need its hands to help you later against the Spiritomb." The Ralts complimented, amazed. With its hands glowing, the psychic type had restored some life back into the Pawmot, although not perfect. If Freyja should require additional aid, she would have to grab medicine from her own pockets.

Pawmot would not be reasoned with—possessed and feral. That fluffy friend was barreling in at speed, covered in electricity, full of spite and rage without reason. "Watch out Star!" Freya cried out as the clefable serenely faced the fighting-electric rodent charging her way. That energy never left her palms, glowing a radiant pink that illuminated her face even in the daunting, suffocating dark. Pawmot slammed hard into Star, the clefable knocked backwards hard and into a wall. She let out a small cry from the force of the impact, cleared battered and bruised, but still somehow holding that light.
Then she smiled. She pressed her moonlit palms to Pamot's face now that she was point blank and released the bright energy. Pawmot didn't stand a chance. She fell back, knocked out in one hit.
Freya hurried over to her friend and pet her fur, worried. As she reached into her bag for a revive, Ralts came over and roused the pawmot itself.
"Thank you," she murmured. "Honestly, I am glad the battle was over fast...Pawmot is very strong and I don't think either of the other two could have taken more than one hit from her. But Star is such a trooper. A lot of people dismiss them as being relatively weak fairies, but they are much stronger and more versatile than many people give them credit for. The number and range of moves she can learn is staggering. If I had the money I could teach her a TM for any situation that came up...though she'd probably not appreciate facing down a steel or poison type..."
Freya realized she was rambling and gave Star a soda pop to drink. The clefable eagerly gulped down the fizzy soda as she returned Pawmot to her pokeball to rest. Spiritomb didn't sound like a good match up for the fighting type, honestly.
"Okay Star, I'm going to keep relying on you for a bit." She said, rising from her crouch to delve deeper into the shadows. She knew what she was looking for—an altar of some sort with an amulet on it. The Totem should leap out at them and bark out a challenge... "If you see the spiritomb, use moonblast, okay?" Freya rubbed her arms, trying to banish the eerie coldness settling into her skin. Brr.
This place was creepy and it was getting hard to breathe,
Star would cheerfully prance ahead, just at the edge of their guide's light. And before Freya actually spotted anything, Star cheerfully threw a moonblast into the darkness at an unseen target.
"Star?"
<Even on the darkest of nights, the moon and stars, they shine. Their light is unseen, but mere shadows do not remove their existence,>

The shadows that permeated the landscape watched. Their anger seethed through their being, causing a thick, black sludge to seep across the ground. When Freya rushed for the alter, searching for something not quite seen as the amulet she hoped for remained firmly in place with herself, something wholly unique happened. A large arm reached out from the black sludge and wrapped itself around what remained of the ruins. Along its bare skin it created sharp spikes that stabbed out into the air, hoping to hit anything nearby. “Your soul will belong to me!” The strange, black sentient sludge screamed loudly from its ethereal form. Chuckling echoed all around her. Should Freya turn in any direction, she would notice thousands of eyes floating along the walls and hovering above her, layering the ceiling overhead. “Succumb. There is no escape. You belong here. Your soul belongs with me.” It insisted, a singsong voice that quietened into a soft murmur, as though it sought to lull her into a deep sleep. Star hopped into action immediately, blasting the strange creature back. The energy of the moon itself was summoned from her fingertips and scorched through the black sludge as it tried to slip its way up Freya’s legs, hoping to drag her down into some other world. It screamed, a ghastly sound that pierced one’s ears and would have made them feel as though they would bleed from the sound alone. “YOUUU!” It hissed, turning its attention on Star, immediately surrounding her with its dark energy… …then… …everything went quiet. In an instance, the air felt lighter, the darkness a little brighter. Whatever it was – spirit or evil entity – it disappeared far off to some other reaches outside of Star’s grasp. “Thank you!” Ralts said, nodding towards the ‘amulet’ Freya would have found – a small Darkinium-Z crystal nestled in a crack within the ruins. It plucked up a strange looking disc and passed it over to Freya as well. “You should take this as well. I’m sure you may make better use of it than this cave will.” Ralts nodded firmly, before ushering Freya and her team back to the opening of the cave.
