Kitamina Willow Kit stood outside the door of Professor Oaks place feeling lost. She had lived in this small town, where everyone knew everyone for the entirety of her life. She knew who Professor Oak was, but had never bothered introducing herself. Now she felt awkward. After eighteen years in New Bark Town one would think that Kit would have gotten to know the professor. But Kit was not a people person. She preferred to live a quiet life with her mother. People tended to annoy Kit.
But Kit had had a long conversation with her mother the night before. Kit felt stuck here in New Bark Town. She hated working dead end jobs where she had to 'serve' people. Who even thought up the idea of 'the customer is always right' anyways? The conversation between Kit's mother and her had lead Kit here. Usually Pokemon trainer's started their journey far sooner than Kit planned to now. But Kit was done, she no longer wanted to be stuck in this small town. Kit wanted more from life, she wanted excitement and adventure! To do that, she would need a partner, a Pokemon that could help her achieve her dreams.
Breathing deeply, Kit steeled herself. Not only for what she would find on the other side of this door but to also make sure she was not rude to Prof. Oak. She was coming to this man to ask something of him and Kit felt awkward and out of her element. With one last glance up at the bright blue sky, Kit pushed forward, opening the door. "Hello?" She called out into the building.

Professor Elm never judged those who came to his lab for their age. Some people never wanted to be trainers, while others started their journey late in life. Some came from far away lands for a second start, while others sought a thrill and a challenge. He was in the back of the lab, filling out some papers as he waiting for his next appointment, when Kit arrived. He heard a voice and cocked his head, perhaps his next appointment arrived early? "Hello? Come in, come in! I am at the back of the lab," Elm called out. He stood up and brushed himself off, checking over the three pokeballs nested in the little machine nearby. Three pokemon waited to be chosen: a charmander, a squirtle and a bulbasaur. Each had their charms and each would serve a trainer well on their journey if chosen. As Kit stepped in, he would grin, "Welcome! I assume you are here for your starter? Well come over here. The ones you can choose are over here. Feel free to let them out of their balls and get to know them. Oh, and I have a starter pack for you right here when you choose one. And a pokedex if you want one." He was deep in his spiel when a little rat entered the room. It had followed kit in to escape the cold, creeping quietly behind her, whiskers twitching as it sought something to eat. As Elm spoke, it saw its goal. Food. His half-eaten bagel just rested on his desk, waiting to be pilfered. The rat made a mad dash for his desk and leapt up, lunging for the food and sending papers and pens scattering loudly. Elm yelped and jumped to the side, "Oh dear. A wild pokemon. Ah, would you do me a favor, young trainer? This would be a great bonding experience for you and your new pokemon, and if you'd like, you could even try catching it. Just...please get it out of the lab. Quickly, yes?"

Kitamina Willow
Professor Oak was startlingly attractive for his age, Kit thought as the man walked out from the back of the lab. The gears started turning, her mother was single, and Kit would be off on an adventure soon enough. Kit didn't want to leave her mother a lone. Was the Professor single and ready to mingle? The Professor spoke, pulling Kit from her musings. He offered a lot of information that Kit had to interpret. She could already choose her starter? Wasn't there some kind of resume that she had to turn in or some kind of life threatening obstacle course that she had to live through to prove that she could take care of a pokemon? Kit was barely an adult herself, freshly off the train at eighteen and yet someone was trusting her with another life?! Then again, actual children came to the professor to receive their new friend and they turned out just fine...right? One would think that if there was a bunch of horrible things going on out in the big world the new on the radio or tv would pick it up. Reporters always wanted the newest and hottest gossip. A child and their pokemon dying a horrible death would surely make the front page of the newspaper.
The older gentleman was also offering her a starter pack. Was it free? The little money that Kit had managed to save up from her odd jobs was supposed to be for actually starting her adventure. Kit would need the basics, a tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, sensible shoes, a sturdier backpack then the old one she had brought to school with her. And bug spray, Kit shuddered internally, so much bug spray. Then again Professor Oak probably knew better what she would need.
Kit started to reach into her comfy black hoodie where she kept her purse in the pouch pocket to count out how much money she actually had when something scuttled right into the lab, from outside. At first Kit was ready to freak out, after just having thought about bug spray, she feared that a long legged insect might have managed to find her. But the freak-out was quickly quieted as she saw what the unwelcomed guest was. The wild pokemon who barged into the lab was no larger than a backpack. It's fur was a dusky purple, like an eggplant with a cream underbelly. It's beady eyes were a little unsettling, no rodent should have blood red eyes like that. And it had a long tail that curled over the top of it's back. The Rattata was quite rude, walking into the building like it owned this place!
Professor Oak's next words had Kits eyebrows raising in surprise. He wanted her to choose her starting pokemon and battle already? Kit wanted to burst out at the Professor, she wanted to snap something along the lines of 'O what, you want me to just battle this WILD pokemon as if I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING!'. Making enemies out of Professor Oak was probably not the best of ideas. Plus, maybe she could spin this encounter in a way that the Professor would offer her that starter pack for free. Yes, I will choose my starter, and I will battle this Rattata, Kit thought with a little nod of her chin.
Kit already had an idea of who she would choose as her starting pokemon after Professor Oak had informed her of her options. Between the three, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander, there was an obvious winner. Charmander would not only be able to help her start a camp fire if needed but they would be super strong against any bug types that Kit might encounter. How was she supposed to know which pokeball to pick up though? The three pokeballs were identical to each other.
The wild Rattata was nibbling away at an abandoned bagel, happily munching at the professors breakfast. She had time to re-pick a ball if it turned out to be the wrong one. Reaching out to grab the ball Kit was surprised at how her hand fit around the sphere, almost as if the pokeball had been made for her small hands. Well not necessarily small, but proportional to her height. The weight of the Pokeball was also surprising, it felt hefty. Shoving aside her hesitation, Kit steeled herself and then threw the ball.
Out popped the most adorable, little creature that Kit had ever seen. Kit had heard of stories about people falling in love at first sight and had never believed them. But Kit believed the far fetched stories now. Because the Charmander, who blinked up at her with these big, crystal blue eyes was her soul animal. "Char!" The Charmander seemed just as enamored with Kit as she was with them. "Hey Charmander!" Kit greeted, feeling her cheeks ache from how large her smile was. "I was wondering if you could help and Professor and I out? See that Rattata over there," Kit pointed to where the rodent was still chomping away "they live outside, not in here!"
"Charmander!" The Charmander nodded its orange head in agreement. Now it was up to Kit to decide on what to do here. Kit had taken the basic classes on Pokemon, she knew at least the basics. Charmander being so young, and likely not having fought many battles if any before, probably didn't know that many moves. But the professor was right, this was the perfect training opportunity for Charmander and her. They were in a safe environment, if anything bad did happen there was someone else to help them get back on their feet. They would not be on the front page of the newspaper!
"Use ember!" Kit found herself getting caught up in the moment and couldn't help the small laugh that left her lips. Charmander bounded forward, eager in their task. The moment that Charmander used Ember, Kit realized her mistake. Not only was the spurt of fire headed towards the wild Rattata, but those hungry orange flickers greedily jumped to the mess of papers that were on the desk. Kits' eyes bulged as she watched the desk burst into flames.
"O no!" Kit was horrified. She had been worried about making an enemy out of Professor Oak, but now she was panicking over burning the entire lab down! He would surely hate her then, and hooking him up with her mother would never happen! What to do...what to do!? Kit looked around the lab frantically, not seeing any way to fix the mess she had made. Then she remembered the other two pokeballs that were just off to her right. One of them had had a Squirtle inside, a starter water type.
Not wanting the cause any more damage to the inside of the lab Kit grabbed both the pokeballs and tossed them at the Professor. "Get Squirtle to put the fire out!" She yelled at the Professor, not quite caring what he thought of her tone at this point. Kit still had more to deal with. Kit had to try to save the Rattata from the inferno. She had just meant to knock it down a few health points not wipe it from this world. Kit saw out of the corner of her eye something that would help. In the starter kit that the Professor had offered her were a handful of empty pokeballs. The professor had suggested she might try to capture the bagel stealing Rattata and that was the quickest way to save the rodent from perishing. With a half dive that almost had Kit falling to her face she reached for the pokeball then with a sure aim she threw it into the fire. With fingers crossed Kit waited to see not only what the Professor would do but also what the fate of the Rattata was.
Words: 1314 Kit chooses Charmander as her starting Pokemon. I am not sure what gender the Charmander is or do I get to pick? Charmander uses Ember. Kit is so sorry about (almost) burning the Professors Lab to the ground. Kit throws a pokeball at the Rattata.

Yes, new trainers usually had contacted Oak beforehand stepping through the door when they wished to start their journey, but Kit was a exception since while she didn't knew Oak really, he knew her, just like he knew all the kids in New Bark Town. He of course didn't know them on a personal level, but he had visited the school plenty of times, and most kids had been on trips to visit his lab, and Kit had stood out since she was one of the few of her year who hadn't gotten a starter from him yet. It was only a few weeks ago he had talked with Kit's mother when they had run into each other randomly in the convenient store and he of course had politely asked to how Kit was doing, and the mother had mentioned that Kit had seemed restless. Oak had guessed the young woman might want to request his aid if that restlessness set her on the road to explore the region. The starter kit hadn't been prepared specifically for her though, he always had some laying around as it was easier than to collect it each time a new trainer arrived, it happened so often. Oak frowned at the rattata, "I can live without the bagel, I can get another, but I hope it won't destroy the papers," he commented to Kitamina without looking at what pokemon she picked. His eyes widened and his head snapped around when he heard what order she called out, "wait!" He gasped but too late as Feara was more than eager to obey, and too young to understand the consequences. Kitamina soon realized her mistake but her panicked yell to the professor was not needed, the moment she had given the other he had lunged at the remaining pokeballs. He knew exactly what was inside them but he still fumbled in his rush, when Kit urged him to put the flames out, the squirtle was already out on the floor and Oak was in the middle of ordering it to blast the table with water. While the papers correctly did burst into flames instantly, the fire itself was actually pretty small, and as soon as the water gun became a part of it, it was turned into a smoking mess. "That was close," Oak sighed with relief. The rat on the other hand was anything but happy, first its food got charred and its skin got singed, and then it got soaked to the bone. "Rattattaaa!" It screeched out furiously and the charmander's bright tail tip caught its attention through the smoke, so it pelted forward and crashed into her, sending them both flailing to the floor. The pokeball came flying a moment later and Kit's aim was perfect as she hit the right pokemon even though it was rolling around on the floor with Feara. The pokeball rolled the floor and shook violently, once... twice.. thrice... aaaand.. ding! It was captured. "What a mess," Oak sighed as he looked around, and just then the fire alarm started to howl loudly as the smoke had reached it. Oak said something under his breath and rushed over to turn it off, when it was quiet again he went resigned to look at his desk and the destroyed papers, "what a mess."He couldn't really be angry at Kit though, the water had done a lot more damage than the fire, and he had done that on his own, and he had told her to fight it to get rid of it. "What a mess," he said for a third time as he dumped the papers and the soaked remains of the bagel into the trashcan beside the table. He turned to smile wryly at Kitamina, "well, that's pokemon training for you, you never know what's going to happen! But that's the exciting thing about pokemon, all sorts of unexpected stuff.""You have made good use of the items already, is the charmander the one you want to keep, or do you prefer one of the other?" Oak asked and waited for her decision before continuing, "there is also a pokedex for you, which can be mighty helpful if you need information on your own or other pokemon. If you are interested, I could use some help collecting information about the pokemon you encounter, which is very simple, just scan them with the pokedex and come and show me once in a while. I'll even reward you," he offered with a smile and waited for her answer before he would wish her good luck and send her out the door. When she left he'd be crawling around on the floor trying to fetch the last remaining pokeball, that had fallen down when he had grasped the squirtle's one. Kitamina Willow Smoke curled up from the table making Kit cough at the acrid stench. She stared with big, dumbfounded eyes at the mess that Feara and her had committed. There were scorch marks on the walls and surely the ceiling would have ash staining it after the smoke had cleared. Prof.Oak had also smartly used his Squirtle to put out the flame, but now the remains of the papers were a big sopping mess. Tears started to sting the back of Kits eyes as she contemplated how much of her saved money this would cost to repair. Probably way more than she had managed to save in her entire life.
A screech had Kit shaking out of her stupor at the chaos. The Rattata, now angered by not only the interruption of its lunch but also the fact that it was now soaked and singed was looking for an outlet for its rage. With anger bursting from its small body, the Rattata scurried across the lab, its tiny feet skidding against the smooth tiles. Feara yelped in surprise as the rodent crashed into her, having not expected this kind of backlash. The two Pokemon, a rodent and a lizard, both fell to the ground in a heap. Claws and teeth clashed together, while wild noses rose up from both of them. As suddenly as the scuffle started, it ended. The pokeball that Kit had thrown had finally reached its destination. With a light woop sound, the pokeball sucked in the small frame of the angered Rattata. Feara gathered her feet under her burnished orange body and together, Kit and Feara both watched to see what would happen.
With an almost violent shake the pokeball rocked back and forth…once…twice…with a final little nudge the pokeball released a dinging sound that Kit knew meant that she had caught the hungry Rattata. The joy that Kit felt was quickly squashed as Prof. Oak started muttering under his breath. ‘what a mess’ he repeated as he went about cleaning. Sodden papers and a half eaten, soggy bagel were dumped into the convenient trash can beside the desk. When the Professor turned back to look at Kit, she worried what she might find on his features. To her surprise the Professor did not seem mad, in fact he smiled at her.
For perhaps the first time in her life, Kit chose her words carefully. “Yes, I would like to keep Charmander.” She smiled down at her new companion, who looked up at her as if she were the world. Even though their first battle had caused so much chaos, Kit had a feeling, deep down, that they would become an amazing team. “Thank you so much Professor, and uhh sorry about you know…” She gestured at the desk, which still dripped with water. Did Kit offer to pay for the damages now? No, it didn’t seem as though Prof. Oak was looking for compensation. In fact he was offering her the backpack, its supplies and a pokedex all for free. Well, not necessarily for free, because it would seem as though the older man had some sort of quest for her. He wanted her to help in his Pokemon research. A task that Kit would probably already undertake while on her journey anyways. “I can help you!” Kit offered with a nod. She stepped forward, grabbing the pack and pokedex. The first she swung up on her back while the later she shoved into the baggy pocket of her hoodie.
“Well, I guess I’ll be going now…” Kit side stepped towards the lab door, motioning for Feara to follow her. They had better get out of here before professor Oak thought twice about all the free stuff that he gave her and damages that they had caused. “O! And by the way, my mom lives just down that road and a few streets over. I’m sure she would love for you to drop in and say hi. Maybe stay for a cup of tea or you know, a date.” The Professor was a good man, Kit could have chosen worse for her mother to date.
Without waiting for Professor Oak to reply, Kit headed outside. The air was cool and crisp, biting at her cheeks and making them rosy. Kit was glad that she wore her favorite hoodie to protect against the elements. With the money in her pocket, the pack on her back and her new partners by her side Kit felt ready for anything.

The professor laughed a bit, perhaps a tiny bit befuddled by the offer to date her mother, but he waved her goodbye before going about trying to clean up the lab. Kit was then faced with the cool, crisp air and a fresh coating of frost upon the world. Winter was here and it brought with it a dullness to the sky and a coldness that crept under the skin. Pokemon were all trying to keep warm and make it until the bounty of spring. So perhaps it might not come as too much of a surprise that a nesting spearow took one look at Kit's hair and decided that it would make a good, toasty addition to its nest. With a caw, it swooped down and grabbed two talons full and YANKED. It flapped ruby red wings and even pecked at Kit for daring to not just surrender the nesting material without a fight, as if she actually had a say on if her hair stayed connected to her head or not!

Kitamina Willow Kit inhaled deeply, the air was bitter with a chill and her breath came out in a deep puff of smoke. Perhaps starting her journey at the start of winter was not the best of ideas. But if she didn't start now, she would no doubt find herself in a dead end job, hating her life. Again. Even though Kit felt guilt for leaving her mother in this small town, she knew that her mother would be fine. Kit would send her mail and call as often as her travels would allow. She wouldn't just up and abandon her mother. Everyone left the nest at some point.
"Well, where to now?" Kit asked her two companions. Feara, her Charmander and Bagel her Rattata each looked up at her. They started squawking at each other, having a conversation that Kit didn't understand. While those two hashed it out Kit also contemplated her options. Should she stay local? She could catch a few more companions to help her through the winter. Then again her main reason for becoming a trainer was so that she could leave. So perhaps continuing down the road to the next town was her best bet.
Kit was still mulling over her thoughts when something dropped on her head. She screeched, had a bug fallen out of a tree and decided to kill her? But no, there were talons tugging at her hair, trying to rip it from her scalp. Kit tried to bat the thing in her hair away and felt soft, feathery wings. A bid was trying to steal the hair that was still attached to her head! Kit continued to swing at the bird as best she could. It finally dropped to the ground in front of her, its chest was heaving heavily and in its talons was a clump of Kits blond hair.
"I will send you back to your birth pokemon for that!" Kit screeched, she was actually bleeding from where the bird had attacked her. Kit had to calm herself, punting the bird across the clearing was not the way to solve this problem. "Feara!" She called out to her starter, wanting this bird to feel the at least some of the pain that it had caused her. "Use Ember!" Charmander snapped to attention, her mouth opened and out spurted bright flames. The heat chased away the cold as the embers chased towards the bird.
Kit contemplated on not throwing a pokeball at the wild bird. But she quickly decided that throwing one of her balls was the best course of action. Not only would Kit be able to teach the bird a lesson by making it her companion. But Kit would also make sure that the rude pokemon would never attack an unsuspecting person again. Words:464

CAW CAW CAW!
The spearow kept yanking and pecking, determined to get this nesting material. Give it up! Stop being so greedy you pesky human. GIVE. It would fight and bite to get it. It was furious and ferocious in its attempt to give Kit a new haircut the hard way. However, a certain little fire lizard would put a hold on that conquest. With fire. Kit, you asked your charmander to use ember on a bird that is on your head...it got a little hot in here. With an alarmed caw, the spearow leapt off Kit to shake the embers from its wings, then swooped down to peck, peck, peck at the charmander that dared intervene.
<I am busy here! Get your own nesting material.> It scolded, flapping its wings and trying to make itself look as big and terrible as possible.
Though it was only one bird.
And a pokeball smacked into its back.
There was a flash and then the capsule hit the frosty ground with a shake. And another... then. All was silent and still once more.

Kitamina Willow Kit coughed at the smoke that surrounded her head. Not only had her faveorite hoodie gotten a little toasty but a bit of her hair had been singed. This was not her idea of a good time. Not only was Kit walking away from this battle bloody but she was learning the hard way that she was not fire proof. As the pokeball that she had thrown at the Spearow rocked once, then twice, then sealed the birds fate, Kit double checked her hair. She was worse for wear, but at least she was adding another companion to her team. The more pokemon she had on her team the easier her journey would be. Kneeling down, Kit checked on Charmaner. Her starter pokemon had been pecked at by the Spearow, but she didn't seem to be majorly injured. "We can stop by the healing center." Kit offered, placing her hand on top of Feara's head to per her. Feara really had been her best choice from Prof. Oak. "Ok, now we move on to bigger and better things!" Words: 178
