The bell around Cocoa’s neck jingled as Sandy walked along with the mouse in her arms. She was getting really tired of walking, but they were almost to Violet city. She wasn’t planning on facing the Gym leader the moment she got there, but she was probably going to see what was there….man did she feel like a tourist.
“Squirtle!” Berry shouted as they finally came to the hill just above the City. It was large, that was for sure. Sandy was hoping she wouldn’t get lost in there, because she hated asking for directions. What intrigued her most though, was that towering above the city was a building, which looked quite old. She had to wonder if they allowed visits there.
“Azu Azurill!” Cocoa was excited and all she wanted Sandy to do was enter the city. Berry felt about the same as the young mouse but didn’t say a thing. After traveling for a while, they had finally reached their goal. The city was beautiful indeed. Sandy didn’t waste any more time as she raced down the hill. A
That night, she rented a room at the Pokémon Center, to regain her and her Pokémon’s strength. With Berry and Cocoa curled on either of her sides, she slept quite soundly. The next morning, she was a lot more rested, and ready to go.
“Come on you two; let’s see what they’ve got to do around here.” She looked to her two Pokémon, who nodded, ready to see what there was to see. Lots of places to visit, friendly people, and wide open streets were explored by the trio for hours. They stopped to eat, and soon, Sandy came to the foot of the tower. She wanted to enter…but, she suddenly had a change of heart. She wanted to face the gym leader. Right then and there.
“Girls…let’s go to the gym.” She uttered, turning heel and heading over to the gym area. She could always go back to the tower afterwards. Entering, she noticed how huge the space over the gym was…probably for his Pokémon…She heard it was a flying type Gym, and Falkner was no pushover. Though…he was a gym leader, so it was expected.
“Hello? Falkner! I’d like to challenge you!” She shouted, an echo answering her. She sent out Scatter, who mewled in contentment. He knew this was a gym battle, and was ready to kick some…tail feathers. Sandy waited patiently until Falkner showed himself.

For many people, seeing the Gym close-up would be intimidating but Sandy seemed to be drawn to it. As she’d guessed, the high ceiling was designed to accommodate for the Falkner’s flying-type Pokémon. He wanted to have as little limits indoors as possible. Pokémon with wings had an advantage while in the air and Falkner wasn’t just going to throw that away.
Hearing a voice from the Gym’s entrance, the teal-haired boy jumped to his feet. He’d been grooming his Pidgey to make sure it was in the best condition possible. Rumour had it that there were a few new kids in town and he’d guessed that at least one would be brave enough to step forward. As a Gym Leader, he had to accept every challenger’s request to battle him. Falkner didn’t find this even the slightest bit of a nuisance. In fact, battling new trainers who hoped to obtain their first badge was always enjoyable.
“Hello, and what’s your name? As you’ve probably guessed, I’m Falkner, the leader of this gym. I specialize in flying-type Pokémon. I hope you’ve trained well because I don’t go easy on anybody. If you manage to defeat me in a battle, I’ll award you with an official Zephyr Badge. Good luck. Now, if you’ll come this way.” Falkner motioned to Sandy to follow him. The blue-haired Gym Leader was aching for a battle. He whistled to his Pidgey and the flying-type flew over to him.
Falkner presented a large arena to his newest challenger. As Falkner led Sandy to her stand which was opposite to his own, a door opened, revealing the referee for the battle. The man, dressed in black and white headed over to the sidelines with a flag in either hand. He seemed to be in his mid-twenties, though he looked really serious. As the referee of an official gym, he couldn’t afford to make any false judgements.
“The rules of the battle are as follows. Each trainer may use up to two Pokémon. The challenger may switch Pokémon at any time during the battle but the Gym Leader cannot. All Pokémon used must be below Level 20. Both trainers are to remain at their posts until the battle has finished. If the challenger manages to win, she will be awarded with the Zephyr Badge and a sum of cash. You’re both free to begin the battle.” the ref declared.
Pidgey swirled around in the air, showing off its extremely high speed stat and its superior condition. The bird Pokémon was a little wary of Scatter as it didn’t have a great history with feline Pokémon. It wondered what the Skitty would have in store for it. The Pidgey was little suspicious. Whatever it was, the bird Pokémon could handle. Pidgey hadn’t backed down before and this time was no different.
You have challenged Gym Leader Falkner to a battle.
Falkner sent out Pidgey (Level 10) to battle you!

"My... Name is Sandy..." She said shyly. She had never been in the presence of a Gym Leader before, and the fact of the matter was..he was really cool. Not that she hadn't met cooler people before...gym leaders sort of had this air to them that no one else had.
Scatter watched as the bird flew around, it looked…looked…just like dinner! He wagged his tail and followed the bird’s flight path, running in circles trying to catch up to it. Berry gave him some motions that made him stop in his tracks. It was like she was telling him ‘This is a serious battle. Cut it out Stupid!’ So he did. Running back to his place before Sandy he waited for her to give a command.
“Scatter, use Ice Beam!” She ordered. The air around Scatter’s body became chilly, and the beam began to form between his teeth.
This was all so exciting for Cocoa to watch. Sure…the mouse had no idea who this man standing opposite of them was, but she liked watching the cream colored bird do circles in the air. It made her wish she was in the battle too, though Sandy probably didn’t think she was ready. From the way the girl was gripping her, it was apparent that this whole thing was probably really important to her.

Falkner listened carefully as the girl said her name to make sure he got it right. He was never good with names but he’d always believed that he should treat each of his challengers with the same respect they showed him. “Well then, Sandy, let’s get this battle started.” Falkner declared, his Pidgey readying himself for a command. The Gym Leader waited until his opponent was ready before making his move.
“Pidgey, let’s begin with a Tackle!” Falkner ordered, wasting no time. The flying-type seemed a little wary of Scatter, now that it had been made aware that he knew an Ice-type move. He was clearly going to be at a disadvantage but that was just something he couldn’t help. The flying-type flew up into the air as quickly as possible, hoping to gain enough distance from his foe to lower the beam’s power.
Scatter opened his mouth and a blue sphere of energy was formed. The Skitty did his best to aim the attack at the fleeing Pidgey as the attack charged up. When he was finally ready, the feline threw his head forward and a light blue beam was fired at Pidgey. To the bird’s surprise, the Skitty had scored a perfect shot and the frozen beam drained his hit points. Pidgey tumbled to the ground, picking up speed as he fell. The flying-type had been knocked out in a single hit!
Falkner saw that his Pokémon was in trouble. The Gym Leader decided to return the tan-coloured bird to its Poké Ball before any further injuries were done. “Pidgey seems to be unable to battle! Round one goes to the challenger! Sandy, you may switch Pokémon now if you wish.” the ref declared, though agreeing with the Leader’s decision to rescue his Pokémon in mid-air. The man raised the green-coloured flag which he had been using to represent Sandy while keeping the red flag lowered by his side. This battle was flying past, yet for a change, Falkner was the one in trouble.
“Wow, now that, I didn’t expect.” Falkner admitted, admiring Sandy’s choice of attack. “Get ready to panic. Pidgeotto’s no push-over!” Falkner called out as he tossed the second orb into the air. Instantly, the flying-type emerged and he was already prepared to dive straight into the battle. Pidgeotto was much larger and more intimidating that the previous bird Pokémon. He was obviously more agile and would surely provide a greater challenge. “Let the second round commence!” the referee announced.
Pidgey was defeated!
Scatter grew to Level 17 and gained one Happiness Point!

Pursing her lips, Sandy thought for a minute. Scatter seemed to have this under control, so she decided that she would keep the cat out to fight the evolved Pokemon. She turned to the ref.
"I'll keep my Skitty in battle." She declared. Scatter was delighted witht he girls decision, yet disappointed at the same time... oh no! not at her choice, at the fact Falkner had recalled his dinner! Though...the bigger bird did look like more of a meal. Berry rolled her eyes. Scatter could be really foolish at times, that was a given. Though, the cat did seem to have this in the bag.
"Alright Scatter, Ice beam again!" Scatter took a leap forwards, charging more of the cold energy and channeling it so the ice beam began to form between his teeth. No bird was going to make a fool of him, not if he could help it!

Falkner seemed a little worried that Sandy was choosing to stick with Scatter. The Skitty’s Ice Beam was proving to be too much for his flying-types. He’d just have to give it his best shot. If the girl defeated him, he’d have no problem handing over a badge to her. She seemed like a pretty decent person. “Pidgeotto, let’s try a Gust attack!” the leader ordered.
Pidgeotto rushed up into the air and prepared a mini whirlwind to strike Sandy’s Pokémon with. Scatter was prepared for anything the flying-type threw at him. The Skitty may have idiotic in some cases but so far, he seemed to have things wrapped up. The flying-type sent a powerful in the feline’s direction. Scatter was hit quite heavily with the attack though he refused to give up.
In retaliation, Scatter began to form a second blue sphere of energy. As he waited for the attack to charge up, he locked aim on his foe and threw his head forward. The cold blue beam was blasted towards Falkner’s Pidgeotto and even though the Pokémon was evolved, the amount of damage it took was phenomenal. Pidgeotto was losing its hit points fast. The bird wasn’t going to last another turn. The battle was really drawing closer to an end.
The referee kept a close eye on both Pokémon. He already knew the outcome of the battle. Falkner was really in trouble. Even so, he wouldn’t speak until the bird Pokémon had fallen. The battle would continue until the very end. “Nice shot, Sandy. You have your Skitty trained well.” Falkner commented to break the tension, though it just made him feel more awkward. “Hang in there, Pidgeotto.” he shouted out, returning his focus to the battle.

Sandy blushed at Falkner's compliment. She didn't think Scatter was so well trained...but if he thought so....maybe the feline was...Scatter seemed to be relishing the comment. He was well trained. No matter what that stupid turtle said. He shook the thought from his head and waited for Sandy to give him another order.
Meanwhile, Cocoa squirmed in Sandy's arms. She really wanted to battle now...but she wouldn't. Scatter was more experienced than her...but one day she would.
"Scatter, Ice Beam once more!" Sandy commanded. The cat was on his toes in a moment, the cold air forming around his body.

Falkner took a deep breath as he heard Sandy tell her Skitty to repeat his last move. The battle was clearly just about to end. “If you can, use another Gust!” Falkner commanded. He focused on his own Pokémon, knowing that it couldn’t take another Ice-type move. His Pokémon couldn’t help their weaknesses so it was only natural that they’d have trouble surviving Scatter’s attack.
The flying-type knew that this was one of the rare conditions where its chances in winning were slim. It flew up towards the ceiling, preparing another Gust attack in the hope that it could get a lucky shot. The bird fired the heavy wind at the kitten Pokémon, successfully striking him. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and Scatter would still be able to continue the fight.
Scatter prepared his final attack. The Skitty formed another blue orb at his mouth which shot towards Pidgeotto once again. The bird was caught by the powerful beam and before Falkner knew it, Pidgeotto was lying unconscious on the ground. A loud thud when it hit the ground indicated that Pidgeotto had taken too much damage to continue. The referee instantly knew that the battle had come to an end.
“Pidgeotto is unable to continue. The challenger is victorious!” the ref summed up in two sentences. “Sandy, this is the Zephyr Badge. You’ve proven that you deserve it.” the blue-haired boy continued, reaching for the badge in the inside of his jacket. “Here, take this TM which contains Roost, a flying-type move. Finally, here’s the prize money you get for beating me.” Falkner said, as if he’d already planned out the big speech. He’d probably sensed that the battle wasn’t going well at an early stage.
Falkner shook Sandy’s hand, congratulating her. “Good luck with your journey. I have a feeling you’ll do well.” Sandy had a lot of potential. Her Pokémon all seemed to be very well trained, whether she knew it or not. Things would only get tougher from here though. The battles would be become more difficult; there’d be a much higher chance that her Pokémon would faint; and the safeguard had expired, meaning she’d no longer be able to capture fainted Pokémon.
Scatter grew to Level 19 and gained one Happiness Point! Scatter wants to learn Copycat but he can only learn four moves. Delete an older move?
Gym Leader Falkner was defeated! Sandy was rewarded with the Zephyr Badge, TM51 and £1560 for winning!

It took Sandy a few moments to register the sentence:
“Pidgeotto is unable to continue. The challenger is victorious!” But once she did, she placed Cocoa on the ground, much tot he mouse's dismay, and let Scatter jump into her arms.
"Yeah! You were awesome Scatter!" She praised, rubbing in between the cat Pokemon's ears. Scatter purred contently, he had done a good job. Berry sighed, letting the air out for a longer than usual sigh. Scatter, though she hated to admit it, had done a good job in the whole battle. Sandy blinked as Falkner handed her the shiny crested badge, the envelope containing a huge amount of prize money, and the TM. That was a lot of nice things for winning a gym battle all right. She listened intently as Falkner spoke and bowed to him when he was finished.
"Thank you Falkner, it was a pleasure battling you." She thanked him again for the TM, putting the items away and then recalling Scatter. She picked up Cocoa and once again let Berry up onto her shoulder.
"Goodbye!" with that, she quickly rushed from the gym, on her way to tour Sprite tower, like she had wanted to do before.
