This is one feature I wasn't all too enthused about. Unlike the Pokemon contests where there is at least SOME strategy to them (Contests in Sinnoh were pretty good in all honesty) these musicals all rely on the props you use and that's about it. It's just... THERE. The first time you do a musical it's all rather whimsical and sweet but it does become a gimmick fast.
I suppose if you're an obsessive compulsive disorder and like to collect things there's the avenue of trying to collect all the props but it just seems like a few steps back from what was being experimented with in the Pokemon Contests.

I agree entirely! I went in and after it was explained to me, I thought 'well this sounds ridiculous'... Then I took part in one. It was an absolute shite-fest for the reasons you stated above. No strategy. NO strategy. I miss Hoenn Contests

Haha, I will laugh if someone says there is strategy in flinging off one of your props into the crowd. Okay, fair game, let's say that is a CRUCIAL strategy to take into account with musicals... It just doesn't compare to Contests. The last contests had a dance off and then the tried and tested formula of performing a variety of attacks. You at least had to think about what you were doing. I'm actually shocked as to how much I lament the loss of contests in Unova. It's not something I thought i'd feel particularly strong about. It also sucks you have to get ALL props to get another rank on your trainer card. Took me forever. I still have yet to try musicals in multiplayer but I can't see it getting any better. It's still going to be a snoozefest.

The upside of it being in multiplayer is that there is someone else with you to laugh at how silly everything is.
Never used to use Contests but I agree, I do miss them in Unova. May go back and play one in Diamond, just to get over the Musicals thing.

The only saving grace of the musicals really is the variety of props you can get. I can just about put together a brilliant Phantom of the Opera for my Gengar. Dashing little chap. ;D

Winning the Master Rank or whatever it is called and getting into the Lillycove(?) Hall of Fall/Gallery thing is a wonderful feeling. My Skarmory (nickname escapes me) was champion of the Cool category. I know, I know, take me now, right? Obv I don't have the Gen V games yet, but I was really hoping for a return to a (revamped version of) the old style of contests. Perhaps they were a little less interactive than the designers had intended contests to be, but I found the DPPt contests a great disappointment, sounds like this lot will be even worse...

You have a really good point Cam. Actually completing the Master Rank of whatever contest category actually proved to feel a LOT better than beating the Elite 4 Champion (Well, maybe not quite the same as the first time you ever do so but definitely in subsequent games). It just seems like an absolute waste to miss out. It's things like those that I do get the feeling they were being lazy to improve Contests somewhat but just thought "Oh hey, let's do this thing where the player does nothing but dress up and voila." ...Although, I did enjoy DPPt's contests.

What about your copy of Sapphire? I think my Blaziken was champion of the green category... Smart, right? I didn't like Gen IV contests that much, either. Still, we've got the Gen III remakes and we should get our lovely old Contests back! YAY!

JUST LIKE TO SAY -
I bred a shiny Gastly last night AND SHE IS SO LOVELY, that I decided to bring her to the contests... and I have changed my mind, I enjoyed the DP contests quite a bit! I think I would prefer a longer 'performance' round, or whatever the one with the moves is called, and I think the dressup is a little silly, but I can see why people like it - collecting things, finding the best combinations and all that..
So I think I am now in agreement with you Joey; third gen good, fourth gen better? I couldn't face contests if they didn't have a strategical section - that makes it!! If they brought back the DPPt system with more emphasis on showing off your snazzy moves and whatnot, I'd be a very happy cammy.
(Also, she won, Smart category ;D)

See, that's what I like: the performance round. I always had loads of fun in Gen III having my pokémon use their moves for reasons other than pwning n00bs so when they made that a smaller part of Contests, I didn't like it Maybe I should try it again?

Definitely go play the DPPt contests again, I enjoyed them a lot more this time round than I did the first couple of times I played it. May have been due to the fact that it was 6am and I was on a high from hatching a shiny Gastly, but eh... go! and with the addition of Poffins.. cuter than PokéBlocks. Is there something like this in the new gen Musicals?

You, me, gay night in - we'll throw in Poffins Though we never end up actually playing it! That's why I was thinking we could have a gay day out! ? So do Pokémon still get ribbons and all? Is the page that shows what contest category moves are in still there? Poffin equivalent no longer necessary??
