So, two actual rivals this time around (Three if you count N because in all honesty, I do).
Bianca was okay, a bit of a clutz but I guess that's what they were aiming for with her. There were times where I couldn't shake the feeling she was a female version of the rival from DPPt. I didn't mind her so much as she had a fair bit of character progression.
Cheren on the otherhand... I am still not entirely sure he is a guy. Just something a bit girly about him. I didn't really bond all that much to his character and was a bit annoyed he had such goofy battle music (That one should exclusively be Bianca's while he should have a more serious theme)
As for N... I know some people don't consider him the rival but for me he posed far more of a threat and just came across better as one. The fact you both had to command the legendary dragons of Unova against one another felt pretty cool and added to the feeling of him as rival.

I didn't really like either. I agree with you on Bianca in that she just seemed like a female version of the rival from DPPt. Also, I felt like she was just a silly cliché of some ditzy blonde and I hated her outfit.
Cheren was incredibly annoying. I realise that Game Freak wanted to have some know-it-all eventually realise there's more to life than facts but, honestly, he was just annoying. Incredibly.
N was just silly. A silly fool.
Overall, I wasn't really impressed with them.

I know I harp on about this but I really miss the days where the rival was cocky and not your friend. They could at least have one rival who's bit of a dick and then a friendly one. In fact, i'm surprised they haven't tried it. Instead its all sunshine and rainbows. Bleh.
I remember back to when the Japanese had the games in their hand and were feeding wrong information about her being the champion. ;D

Yeah hearing that I was like; O___O OH GOD NO
I never really liked either of them, or their theme, but N was pretty awesome. I dunno, he was definitely a neat pseudo-rival and his team changing every time you fought him at least kept in sync with his idea that Pokémon aren't tools.

Isn't it that he catches local pokémon, battles you, then releases them?

The thing is about the rival's theme in Unova was it sounded a bit too happy and something out of a Paper Mario game. When you face Cheren in Victory Road and he's finally found the answer he's looking for and has his Pokemon all buffed up and everything the last bit of music I expect to hear is that clumsy piece.

Listening to it now... No. Don't like it. I don't normally play with the sound on since I normally play at night when everyone's asleep so it'd be rude to play the music and earphones are too scary in case I fall asleep and choke myself on them. So glad I didn't cause this theme is too... not pokémon.

Aside from a remix Dani got me to listen to i've not really heard anything that makes me like their theme song or changes my opinion on it. The remix Dani posted is a nice alternative take on it but it's just too goofy. Sure they're your friends but something with a bit more oomph! Interestingly enough, the rival themes have been getting progressively worse. In Red/Blue there wasn't really anything considered a rival theme (Although the *OMG SPOILERS* champion theme could be considered it) then Silver's one is just amazing, May/Brendan is pretty good and there are some remixes that really do it justice and then... Blah. 4th gen and 5th gen really aren't all that in my opinion. Nothing gets me pumped to battle these guys any differently than "Oh you, just another battle..." So yes, unlike the Pokemon designs which i've grown accustomed to, I STILL don't like the music.

For most part, I actually enjoyed Bianca despite her ditz moments. She's flat out adorable for all the klutz that she is and definitely has a bit more depth to her compared to the other rivals and one can imagine her having an inferiority complex/ familial problems with an overbearing or misogynistic father. I mean, a rival doesn't have to be as antagonistic towards the main player as Gary obviously was. She's a good example of the friendlier side of rivalry. I've got no opinion on Cheren tbh X3 They could have done a bit more with his character, definitely. I also happen to play the games on mute......so I have no idea what their personal themes sound like X3 Mainly because I prefer to play with some epic Steve Jablonsky/ Two Steps from Helll/ Stan Bush in the background.

After finally beating the elite four since I gout a just under perfect Reshiram I can finally say what I think of all the Rivals.
Ghetsis is not a rival like the others in the fact that you only fight him once but his character is pretty cool and it is amazing how messed up in the head this guy is but he is really cool and to an extent it is nice that you only have to fight him once.
Next Up N is a pretty cool rival. He is the first trainer to use a legendary pokemon on their team during the main story. It is quite a challenge to beat Zekrom/Reshiram but at the same time doing so prooves you are pretty good especially since Zekrom has no physical Dragon moves so when you use Dragonbreath it does not do as much as Reshirams Dragonbreath. Overall he is a pretty cool character even if it is a shame they did not go as deep as they could have into his history.
Next Cheron the Guy Rival. I hate him personally since he seems kinda dull compared to male rivals from earlier games such as Gary aka Blue. The one thing I like about him is that he uses a better team than Bianca/
Finally Bianca the female rival. I actually like her unlike most of the other Female Rivals. She may be a bit of a klutz but it is funny seeing her make so many mistakes but still refusing to give up even after she loses to you 5+ times. Hopefully they will expand her Cheron and the others in Grey but if not I can at least say these are not the worst Rivals in the game overall.

I may sound dumb when I say this, but Bianca reminds me of myself; a ditzy blonde girl. I wouldn't be as... lame a trainer as she is, but there were qualities I liked about her that probably show up in my character too, ahaha.
Cheren was like a wet towel, no fun and no play, "MUST BE CHAMPIONZZZZ". They tried giving him development but it felt kinda forced, y'know?

Forced development is exactly how it felt. Even at the end I felt no difference towards him from the beginning. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps having that many rivals stretched out what good they had. It just seems like they had a base outline of what his character would be like and just called it a day. His appearance is a bit of a bum note too. Those trousers are absolutely horrid and I honestly considered him a girl due to how skinny he looked. GIVE THAT KID A SANDWICH!
