When noticing Diane - and believe me, you will notice her - the first thing you think of is her height. At about 193cm (or 6' 4" if you use the imperial system), Diane is rather tall for a teenage girl and thus tends to stand out from a crowd. Her appearance, which by many has been called both beautiful and cute, may help a bit too. And when you notice her features you can't really blame them: Long, pink, wavy hair, flowing across her back down to her hips and even covering parts of her face, which almost on its own seems to find itself in a perfect style to match her looks; A round face with a small, upward nose and a narrow mouth turned up in a modest smile, and probably the most beautiful cyan eyes you've ever seen.
As she steps out of said crowd you see her apparel, which even though not flattering to her figure seems to fit her perfectly nonetheless. On her shoulders you see the straps from a red tank-top, though it and most of the rest of her upper body is clad in a canary yellow pullover with light cherry hems, with sleeves draping down her arms and over her hands, and even further. Her lower body is covered in a long, flowing, brown skirt, but even through it you can notice her legs, long and toned from hard work at her family's ranch. All of this along with her modest demeanour and timid posture only seems to crystallize the fact that not only is Diane Pine a hidden gem, she would prefer to keep it that way too.
Personality:
Timid and soft-spoken, at first glance Diane seems to be the person who would rather turn her tail and flee than stay and help whenever danger reveal it's ugly head. And in a way, she usually does so in most cases. She's every bit of a pushover, and most often finds herself on the "loosing" side of an argument or deal as she agrees with what the other one is saying and rarely ever raises an opinion herself. She rarely dares to speak to almost anyone she doesn't know, which makes introductions a bit of a hassle as she barely raise her voice above a whisper. To finish it all she frequently hides behind her locks to shy away from those confronting her, whether that be Team Rocket or just an ordinary stranger. This is also a reason as to why she dress as she does, to passive-defensively fend of potential suitors and sleazebags, though in some weird way it actually highlights her rather than hides her away.
Self-confidence is something in which she lacks, and she normally trust little in her own abilities. She wasn't fast enough during P.E and came dead last, she wasn't strong enough at home and spilled most of the food, and she wasn't pretty enough to win that beauty contest her mother had her entered into (though that last one isn't really that much of a surprise for her nowadays). When, in fact, she was fast enough but was only worn out from having carried way to heavy bags the day before, bags which had been faultily closed up in the factories and thus ripped open to easily when she eventually tripped because of their overweight, which too was due to a factory-error over stuffing them. And the beauty contest she would probably have come rather high in hadn't the judges not only been told (for political reasons) but even been PAID to choose some other girls for those places rather than Diane. Nowadays, whenever something goes wrong it is usually to her not being good enough, her mind tells her so. Though this does strive her to always try to be good, always try to become better than she already is, and always improve her abilities, it usually is more of a curse than a blessing.
However, timid and spot-spoken she may be, self-confidence she may lack, but one thing no one denies her is her actual kindness and honest modesty. Whenever someone is ill or is going through rough times, she tries to be there for them as much as possible. If someone is hungry she shares her meagre rations with them, if someone is cold she lends them a towel and let them sit down by her fire. If a friend is as much as having a bad day she tries to cheer them up with a shy smile and a soft hug. Giving and sacrificing she may be, often to a fault, but she still have dreams and aspirations of her own which she strives towards. It is just that the wants of others comes that far before her own. "Really, I do want things myself! This ball for example, I want this! O-oh, y-you want it to? Here! You can have it!"
Her protectiveness however... wow! Give me a wounded lion every day of the week and I would still prefer the cat to Diane when she is in one of her rare bad moods! If someone confronts her she may wane, but if one of her friends is threatened she flares up like a mama bear protecting its cub and stands up for them. The evil eye she sends you (which is one part chock, one part shame, and three parts terror) makes you wish you would've thought over what you did long before you as much as thought of doing it, and can send even the biggest of Pokémon running for their hides. There is a reason her friends call it The Stare, and its not only because she actually able to look them in the eyes for once.
Likes and Dislikes:
Well, first of all she loves Pokémon. Seeing as how her parents are a ranger and a breeder that ain't really that much of a surprise. That the shyness stated above doesn't really apply to pokémon, on the other hand, is more so. She was always very busy with her parents and helping them while growing up, and seeing as how she grew up with Pokémon as her only real friends the trust she gives in them becomes less surprising. Granted she is still very timid, kind and soft-spoken, so more often it is them holding the figurative pokéballs so to speak, but it's still a very good friendship, and she misses them all every day.
Other than that she and her parents did travel a lot and went swimming lots, so the ocean ain't that much of a deal. Neither is the sky, seeing as how her mother used to take her on flights with her pokémon every now and again. She doesn't have any great dislikes really, she's way to kind to dislike stuff. Or, well, Team Rocket can be a group of big meanies sometimes, and poachers are never up to any good. Carrots have a very strange taste colour and texture, and darkness still tend to shake her up a bit. Speed frightens her some, weird strangers have never been a real favourite of hers, her shadow looks menacing every one in a while, and, and... well, okay, so there may be a few things she dislikes and find a bit scary. There are only two things she is really frightened of, however: Fire and Dragons, two fears which are actually very related and further explained in the history below.
History:
Childhood
Diane was born on Valencia Island to Jack Pine, pokéranger who managed to hold the entire island as his precinct, and Sue Posey Pine, breeder of bird, rock and water type pokémon. Seeing as how they lived on an island her mother's choice of rock types was rather odd, but I digress. The two parents couldn't have been more happy and proud of their little girl, and they allowed her into their lives with gusto; Jack took her with him around the island on his daily runs, and Sue showed Diane the ins and outs of how to care for and breed Pokémon. It was a good life, and Diane helped her father and mother out as best as she could. She was still just a kid however and there wasn't much she could really do, but she tried. And for many years this was enough.
It was also during this time she developed her fear of fire and dragons. How, you might ask? Well, it all began with a dream, really. In the bedtime stories her mother read to her every night the princess would always be rescued from a feral Charizard by a knight in shining armour, proving he was a hero by taming the foul beast and saving the day. And such were her dreams too, that a knight in armour would show up to save her from Charizards, bullies, or even Charizard bullies, and all was good.
One time, however, things weren't. Long story short the Charizard cooked not only her knight, but her as well, hot, searing flames spewing from its gullet. When she finally woke up from the nightmare she realized why: It hadn't all been a dream. Her room was on fire, the fire apparently having spread from a sheet that fell over a hot night light in a faulty outlet. Why hadn't the fire-alarm set off? Faulty batteries, and it was Diane's shriek that woke her parents up to the sea of smoke on their ceiling. The three of them had managed to get out, luckily enough, but their house was soon in full flames. Poor thing had been terrified of fires and dragons ever since, and don't even mention Charizards.
A few years later, however, school started. Now, suddenly, there were these strangers everywhere, but at first it wasn't that bad really. Sure, they were a bit odd, but they got along just fine. It was then, however, that the teasing began. The boys made fun of her (which, in little boy tongue, meant they thought she was pretty) pulled her hair (which meant they liked it), and called her names like crybaby and scaredycat (which meant... that... yeah, I got nothing). And the girls were even worse! Not as much hair pulling or name calling perhaps, but more passively. They mostly kept to themselves, and froze her out. They wouldn't allow her to play with them, whe she got close they stopped talking until she went away; that kind of stuff. Kids could be cruel...
Teenage years
As she grew older it stopped over time, but the damage had already been done. Shaky as a leaf and almost scared of strangers, Diane had a hard time fitting in with the other kids at school. Having been an early bloomed didn't really help either, the girls freezing her out even more and the boy fawning over her in their own primitive and perverted ways. Amongst all this however, one of the bullies still remained after all these years: Gilda. Gilda Hawk had always been a burly girl, with hair white as snow and a real mean streak, and as they got older she became even more so. The methods of a boy with the meanness and reasons of a girl, Gilda became the haunting of much of Diane's young life. But those years wasn't all bad.
During one of the "sessions" with Gilda, she had come to her rescue: Polly. Polly Chroma, a lean girl with tomboyish manners and a hair every colour of the rainbow, never one to follow along and always made her own path in life. She, like Diane, was a bit of an outcast in the small school, though on the other side of the scale. Diane may be a pushover, but Polly never confirmed to anything, including teachers. Nonetheless, "You leave her alone, Gilda!" she had said. Diane had never had anyone stand up for her like that before, and was quite surprised when Polly had stepped in between her and Gilda. As was Gilda for that matter, for the very same reasons, though she was quicker to recover. All in all it had ended in a fight between the bully and the saviour, a trip for the two of them to detention, and a first real human friend for Diane. Following that the two of them were inseparable, outcasts as they were, though never with real influence spreading between the two. Polly had made Diane skip a class once, but Diane had felt so bad about it afterwards that Polly never gave that plan any thought ever again; similarly Diane had made Polly help with her chores back home at the ranch, but things hadn't really gone... yeah, let's just say that Polly wasn't allowed to do that anymore. Nevertheless, the two of them held each other company through thick and thin.
The years went by, and the two of them grew older. Gilda came and went, and Polly was always there for her when she did so, but Diane began feeling... weird, around Polly. Fluttery stomach, wobbly knees, flushed cheeks: Everything felt the way it should feel when... No! Polly was a girl just like her, it couldn't be... could it? No, but... no! Nonetheless, the feelings remained, and only grew more and more the less she focused on Polly it seemed to her. Diane asked her parents, but didn't get a real answer from them. "Remember that we'll always love you, no matter what!" they had said, and Diane was mostly confused. Was that a yes? A no? A maybe? She went to the only other source she knew: Professor Ivy.
Professor Ivy, over at the local Pokémon Lab, had been one of the few adult presences in her life other than her parents. Ivy and her father Jack were good friends, seeing as how they both had a great interest in keeping the flora and fauna of the isle safe they had worked together on several occasions, and from there a budding friendship bloomed. She and Diane had always gotten along, Ivy never pestered the young girl about her shyness and had even babysat her a couple of times when her parents were off doing something important somewhere. She had been a long time idol of Diane, seeing as how her work helped the world, and to ask this kind of thing was a bit weird. But on the other hand, where else could she turn?
The answer she got only ended up confusing her more: "It could be, but you'll only know if you try it!" Try it? Wasn't love a definite Yes or No thing? Granted it was probably merely a crush or something, but those feelings nonetheless. And Polly was a girl! Girls couldn't be with girls... could they? The feelings pestered her, and she soon found herself with no choice in the matter: Polly had asked her. She had noticed that Diane had become weirder and weirder, and more and more distant from her, and demanded to know what was going on. She told her. Polly had screamed at her, told her that she wasn't "like that", and Diane apologized. For what she didn't know, she had only been honest, but she apologized none the less. Polly ran off, and Diane didn't see her for a couple of days. Life turned from weird to horrible in mere moments. Diane didn't go to school that week. She didn't get any good sleep. She barely ate anything either! Opal, the family's pet Meowth, had tried to cheer her up without greater success, though she had gotten a hug or three in return.
A week or so later, a knock was heard on the door. Polly returned. Diane immediately tried to apologize again, but was interrupted by a hug. Polly told her about her own side of things. The teasing. The name calling she had had to endure, more so in the later years: Lesbo, butch, and so forth. With the rainbow colouration representing what it did things weren't exactly easy for a girl with hair in all the colours of said rainbow. When Diane confessed Polly had been shocked, confused, but even more so she had been scared. Not of Diane per se, but of proving the bullies right. They kept talking for a while, and as day turned into evening it all ended with a sweet kiss. The bullies might have been right, but the two of them couldn't care less at that moment.
The years went by, and by now the time had come for Universities and work and whatnot. Polly had managed to get a job with Jack, and assisted him in his duties as a Ranger in training. Diane, meanwhile, had asked Professor Ivy for apprenticeship. Ivy, however, said no. Lack of experience, she had said. Her parents had tried to argue with her, but the Professor was firm in her choice. She told Diane to leave on a Pokémon journey, to see the world. If a 10 year old kid could do it so could 19 year old Diane after all! Learn and experience, and come back a new woman. Then, and only then, could she claim the apprenticeship she had wanted.
With tears and hugs Diane had left her little Island village, with a promise to write every day, not only to her parents and her girlfriend but to the Professor as well. To tell her of all that she discovered, all that she experienced, and all that she learned.
"Even the greatest journey begins with a single step!" is how the saying goes. Well, Diane's begins with a trip on a blimp to Kanto, to see Professor Oak and get her own starter Pokémon.
Goals:
To see the world, watch and learn about the different kinds of Pokémon in the world, and to one day become apprentice under her idol Professor Ivy ("If that's okay with her, that is. I-it's really okay if she isn't, really."), and following that to become a Pokémon Professor in her own right.

Trivia:
Her parents were fun to make, seeing as how I first wanted to add as many references as I could. I had plenty of them, such as her father having a Rapidash named Twilight and her mother a Blastoise named Tank amongst others, but I ultimately decided against it. It was a history about Diane after all, and though it could've been fun adding references for the sake of references it would only clutter things up in the end.
Also I rather would've given her some kind of rabbit pokémon and name it Angel instead of my current thoughts of a Squirtle, but that would've been way to obvious a reference! Also, the rules and all, but way to obvious reference still. The Squirtle will still be named Angel though, seeing as how Tank is actually a Tortoise and not a Turtle!
Still, there are several references in there, some more blatant than others. Can you spot them all?

Other Info:
Family and Relations:
- Jack Pine, father:
Jack Pine is the sole Pokémon Ranger of Valencia Island, protecting and caring for it all with his trusted pokémon and their abilities. His own companions consists of Parker the Ariados and Guybrush the Dodrio, two trusty sidekicks on all Ranger adventures. - Sue Pine (maiden name Posey), mother:
Sue Pine is a Pokémon Breeder, caring for and breeding Pokémon primarily of the Flying, Water and Rock types. Her two sweethearts are Clyde the Onix, a gift from her own father actually, and Steven the Gyarados. Two giant snakes, one landbound and one oceanic, but she love them both dearly. - Opal, pet Meowth:
Opal is one of the many daughters of the family's pet Persian, Rarity, but the only one of the kittens that they kept. Though like her mother she can be a bit vain and proud at times she too know when to give of herself, and that have never failed her so far... except that she may have gotten a hug or three to many, but that's a worthy sacrifice! - Professor Ivy, Pokémon Professor and family friend:
Professor Ivy, the local Pokémon Professor of the Orange Archipelago, is a dear friend of the family. With Jack being the only Ranger on the island they're in touch with one another frequently, and thus she has become a friend to the family. Currently the on-distance mentor of Diane as she travels the world to gather "points" for her internship test. - Polly Chroma, girlfriend:
Polly has been Diane's friend throughout their teens, ever since Polly rescued her from Gilda that first time. Over the years this friendship budded into something firmer, and during their later teens it budded into something more. Polly currently trains under Diane's father to become a Pokémon ranger, feeling that the job fit in with her free spirit and love of both outdoors and Pokémon. Like Diane she hasn't gotten a Pokémon of her own yet, but hope to get one while out on Ranger Duty.
