Here is a list of a few things which might help to start you off. In particular, this should be useful for inexperienced roleplayers. I've kept it as concise as possible because walls of text scare people away. Anyway, I hope this helps people.
Aaand that's it! Have fun roleplaying.
“Have I already obtained my starter Pokémon or do I have to roleplay it out?”
As soon as you’ve claimed your starter Pokémon and it has been updated by a staff member, you’re free to begin your first thread in New Bark Town. You may want to roleplay out how you received your first Pokémon or simply begin as if you’ve already obtained it. This is entirely up to you and all comes down to personal preference.
“How long should my posts be?”
Each individual post should be no less than six sentences long. It also helps if you can split it into paragraphs. Our moderators always try to reply with high quality posts and must also do calculations for battles, etc. It’s only fair you ensure that your posts are of a decent length. If each post takes you only five minutes, you really should be putting in more effort.
“I don’t know what to write!”
There’s quite a lot you can say about your character if you think about it. They can have all sorts of opinions and reactions, depending on the circumstances. Here are a few things that might help you out:
- Seasons and Weather Statement: You should always check for both of these before starting your thread. To find the weather statement for the town/city that your character is in, you simply click on the board and you will see a thread stickied with information on it. You will also notice a picture with the season written on it at the top of the page. The weather and season can really affect your character’s mood. Maybe they get bad sunburn or maybe they get sick during winter? You can also talk about their movements (shivering, wiping raindrops from their face, etc.).
- Battles: When in a battle, your character obviously has an opinion. Are they confident they’ll win? Is their opponent tougher than they expected? Do they plan to capture the Pokémon? For trainer battles, your character should also interact with their opponent, as well forming opinions on them. Again, you can bring expressions and movements into this (clenching fists, biting nails, arrogant smirk, etc.).
- Memories: Everyone thinks about the past at some point. For example, seeing a wild Pokémon could trigger some childhood memories involving a Pokémon of that species. If it's quiet, your character might be lonely and think about their family and friends back home. There are plenty of stuff that you could talk about.
“Is there anything else I should aim to do?”
When your character is speaking, it helps a lot if you could differentiate their speech from the rest of the text. As well as using, quotation marks, it helps if you can use another colour for their speech. If you’re not familiar with how this should be done, just select the text you want to change and look for a button that allows you to select a colour. Make sure you preview it first though! There are a few colours that look awful on a grey background (certain shades of red, green and purple in particular).
