Gwen made a pit stop at the Pokemon Center.
"Bye, Cyndaquil!" she said brightly, activating the PC. She made a mental note to be on the lookout for good Trainers in need. She'd sold her Doduo to a good home, after all...
"You guys ready?" the Artist asked, sending out her entire team. Tanner and Quartz were wildly excited, but Rona just arched her back happily. As for her Bulbasaur, he looked a little sad and subdued.
"Something wrong, Forrest?" Gwen asked, crouching to his eye level. "Are you upset that you can't fight Falkner?"
"Bulsa sar ba," came his timid voice.
Gwen thought for a moment and rubbed her head in frustration. "Aren't Trainers supposed to be able to understand their Pokemon by now?"
"Basar!" Forrest pointed at Quartz and started miming a fight. After a few moments, Gwen remembered the Bagon and the fight to save the little Smoochum and her mother.
"You were plenty of help there too, Forrest," Gwen urged. "And just because you couldn't fight the Bellsprout - "
"Bulba!"
"How do you even know what level Quartz is at?" Gwen sighed. "I promise it's okay. Tell you what - as soon we get to the next route: you, me, and wild Pokemon. We'll get you stronger in no time."
Forrest muttered something, and Gwen thought she caught the word Bugsy. But he smiled wanly at her all the same and gestured for them to head on out. ***
Gwen stood outside the Gym with Tanner on her arm. Even though she had to keep her shoulder painfully still, she thought it'd make a good first impression.
"Roww!" Tanner complained, pitching wildly, as Gwen reached out to open the Gym doors.
"Shush," Gwen said. "And don't fall off!"
They were both astonished at the interior of the Gym. It was spacious and high and plenty scary, especially to someone afraid of heights. Tanner took off delightedly and circled around in the updrafts. Gwen had to whistle for two minutes to get him back to her arm, and the sound echoed shrilly.
"I guess Falkner knows we're here," Gwen noted. "All right, Tanner, I promised you an aerial battle, and you deserve it. Onwards!"

The inside of the gym, although spacious and high, was eerily quiet as the doors opened. The moment Gwen stepped through the doors, it was probably as if walking into an abandoned building. Faint rustlings could be heard when the door shut behind them, and plenty of eyes seemed to peer at Tanner. The Gym was well equipped for Pokemon such as Tanner, so it was no surprise when the Spearow launched itself up into the air in sheer glee. As if that moment signalled something, the silence was immediately interrupted with the sound of hundreds of wings beating as other birds took flight. Pidgeys, Spearows, even a few older and more experienced and evolved Pokemon took to the skies. It was a moment that Tanner could probably never forget. As Gwen sat there, whistling for Tanner to return, a figure had entered the room to watch with amusement. Usually Falkner was the one looking inexperienced compared to some of the older trainers walking in to challenge him, but for once this was a change. Not to say that Gwen wasn't experienced, but the situation was very amusing. When the Spearow returned to her arm, Falkner began a soft clap. The birds flew to their nearest perch around them, one of them, a Pidgey, flying to his arm to perch, much like Tanner did with Gwen. "I gotta say, that's a nice looking Spearow. He must preen every day!" Birds were very self-concious about their appearance, and would preen frequently. Even as Falkner spoke, his Pidgey began to clean it's feathers idly. "Try running drills with your Spearow. Use bits of treats as an incentive until it becomes second nature to him. After all, they're sentient and even though Pokemon want to come back, his instincts will kick in until trained." Realizing that he was giving advice instead of adressing why she was here, Falkner cleared his throat. "Oh, yeah. I guess you're here for the Gym Badge, eh? Heard about my birds and wanted to come and battle? Well, my father's pretty good at training, and we've got a nice system here. If you're here to fight for my gym badge, then I, Falkner, Gym Leader of Violet City, accept your challenge!"Gym Leader Falkner accepts your battle invitation! Falkner sends out Pidgey! (Level 10)

When hundreds of birds began flapping their wings, Gwen couldn't help but duck for cover. It felt like she was in the middle of a windstorm. Eventually, she recovered enough to whistle for Tanner, even though she felt like it could barely be heard. Oh well; birds usually had keen ear...holes. Birds had ears, right?
She was distracted by Falkner, whose entrance was much more impressive given the feathery storm. Tanner seemed a little pleased at his attention, and Gwen raptly listened to Falkner's advice. "Thank you! We'll keep it in mind." Note to self, buy Poketreats.
"Okay, Tanner," she added gleefully. "It's time to duel!" She flung her arm into the air, the way professional Staravia trainers did, and Tanner tumbled into the air with a squawk, unable to spread his wings in time. Gwen grimaced. Good thing it wasn't a test of aerial aerobics.
"Let's start things off simple," Gwen decided, as the Spearow and Pidgey began weaving around in the air. "Pursue it, Tanner! Don't let it get away!"
"Spe!" the bird shrieked. It was the most fun he'd had since knocking over the floor lamp in Cherrygrove. It was just like being a hunter back in the wild. Only this time, there was no way Tanner could lose! *** Spearow used Pursuit!

Falkner had not been a gym leader for long but he was pretty impressed by Gwen's Spearow. He was rather pleased to see such a young trainer have such a strong bird Pokemon and he was even more pleased to see Gwen start the battle with a Spearow as most trainers would have tried a Mareep or even worse the flying Pikachu that had started to appear in swarms. This was a unique chance for Falkner to see just how well he had learned from his father by fighting he very type he specialized in. " It is wonderful to see that we shall both be using a flying type to start things off. It is very much a welcomed change of pace and I cannot wait to see what your Spearow can do." As he finished speaking both bird Pokemon took off as they began to have an aerial battle. As Tanner and Pidgey flew around Pidgey was rather shocked to see how fast Tanner could move. For once Pidgey seemed to have found a worthy foe instead of getting blown out of the sky with a Thundershock. What Pidgey did not realize until it was much too late was that Tanner had been using Pursuit to jeep on Pidgey's tail so it could unleash a devastating attack. Just as Pidgey tried to turn around and try to get some separation between it and the Spearow Tanner slammed into Pidgey with all of his might. There was a loud crash as the birds collided. Falkner thought that the blow had knocked Pidgey out but somehow the bird Pokemon managed to hold on. Pidgey was visibly shaken from the collision but it would not give in. As Pidgey looked down at Falkner hoping it's trainer would come up with a plan Falkner began to speak. " That was a massive collision are you ok Pidgey? I have never seen a flying type that is still so young be able to attack with such a display of force. This battle may be even more entertaining than I had originally thought. Pidgey try your best to turn things around with a Gust attack." As Falkner finished speaking Pidgey began to flap it's wings as hard as it could as it summoned a gust of wind. The wind caused smal pebbles and other debris to fly around the gym. Tanner was pelted by a few of the stones but he quickly recovered from the attack unlike Pidgey. As the two bird Pokemon glared at one another they both knew another round was in order. Falkner was quite impressed by the first round even if his Pidgey had clearly taken a far stronger blow. He still had a lot to learn but he was not ready to give in just yet. " I must say this first round was a true shock to me. As strong as your Spearow looks it is even stronger than I had imagined. Do not think it is over yet however as I still have a few tricks up my sleeve. I do not know about Pidgey but I sure am excited for the next round. He said as he smiled as he looked over at Gwen. Falkner seemed just as excited as Gwen to be having an aerial battle. Gwen couldn't help but hide a smile; he was really just a Flying-type nerd. Then she felt a flush of guilt, since she had been planning on using Quartz for the next of his Pokemon. Maybe she should use someone less overpowered, like Rona...
"How much did those rocks bother you, Tanner?" she called. The Spearow was trying to flap and peck dirt out of his wings at the same time. It was impressive he didn't fall out of the sky, especially considering the Pidgey constantly on his tail. Thankfully, the sand kicked up by Gust appeared more irritating than anything.
"Okay," Gwen decided. The nerves were getting to her, making her bounce on her heels. "Attack it quick! Just Peck it!"
The Spearow shrieked, trying to intimidate the Pidgey. Then he flew forwards, beginning to build up speed. *** Spearow used Peck!

Gritting his teeth, Falkner appeared a little perturbed despite what he had said previously. He had to try and keep his cool but at this point it seemed Gwen not only had a stronger bird Pokemon at her disposal but his Pokemon's attacks against Tanner were for nothing. His Pidgey's gust usually surprised many of their opponents, a fairly powerful move coming from such a scruffy little thing. Perhaps being an avian itself, it meant the move was not so much of a surprise. " I see you're not letting up. Then neither can we. Pidgey! Continue our aerial battle and take on our opponent with tackle. Try and knock the Pokemon off course so we can try and turn this battle around in our favour." His arms folding as he craned his neck up to watch the impressive flight of their two Pokemon, Falkner could at least find some contentment in the fact they were on even ground. Or air. The fact this girl didn't appear to have an electric type on her was was of some relief. Nothing angered him more than know it all trainers jolting his Pokemon into submission. If this moody Spearow were to win, it would be down to its fortitude as a bird Pokemon and not cheap shock tactics. Wincing at his own beloved bird Pokemon being outdone by none other than another bird Pokemon, it was almost as if the master was being schooled in his own area of expertise. Trying to compose himself, Falkner flicked his fringe to one side as he recalled Pidgey. " W-Well... Seems you've won the round." Clutching the Pokeball to his chest, Falkner sighed. " Return and rest well Pidgey." Looking back up to Gwen, Falkner took on a new found gust of confidence. " I can tell you've got potential. I wonder if you can live up to it all with my next choice... PIDGEOTTO! COME!" Throwing his Pokeball forward elegantly, emerging from the ball was a very similar looking Pokemon from the Pidgey before. Although, you would have to discount the fact it looked a lot larger and defined than its younger form. Flapping effortlessly in the air, the Pokemon looked at the Spearow. It may have bested it's fledging relative but would it stick around to take on the better fighter? Gym Battle

Tanner was jubilant. He was finally king of the wild - or, the gym battle, at least! He was filled with the happiness that came with gaining a level in strength. The Pidgey had bowed before his might.
He soared down to Gwen, feeling more graceful than he looked, and landed on her head with a force that nearly knocked her over. She gave him a hug, and Tanner nipped her shoulder as she patted his head. "Tanner, that was amazing!"
"Ree," he said smugly.
"Yes," she agreed blandly. "I think. Go on and have a rest."
The Spearow heaved himself out of her arms, managing to clumsily avoid the Pokeball's beam. "Speea! Spr spero!"
"You don't want to go back?" Gwen translated. His body language made it clear. "You want to give that Pidgeotto a go?"
"Spearow!"
Gwen winced. "Tanner, we promised to give Quartz a try..." Refusing a bird Pokemon a battle was really, really painful in front of Falkner.
"Skkkk," he huffed, which was probably a jab at the Smoochum's ability to survive a dive-bomb from a giant bird.
"Sorry!" she squeaked. "I really should've saved you for this one...just return, okay?" Tanner gave her a slit-eyed look as she recalled him.
Gwen faced Falkner squarely. "You're gonna hate me for this.
"Quartz, go! Use Powder Snow!"
"Smooch!"

Despite having lost his first Pokemon after just two rounds Falkner was optimistic about his next Pokemon's chances. After all Pidgeotto did have a little more training than his Pidgey and it had a sneaky move it could use if feathers hit the fan. Falkner was still a bit nervous about whether or not Gwen would use her well trained Spearow or something else and he nearly panicked when she sent out a Smoochum. He had rarely seen a trainer use ice types against him and Smoochum was an even rarer sight. He looked at the small Pokemon cautiously as he knew how dangerous Smoochum could be to flying type Pokemon. As Falkner began to think up a plan he nervously began to talk to Gwen hoping that he could keep his cool. " Oh wow I um did not see that coming. This will be intresting to see how I well I can handle ice types. Most trainers use electric types so it is a bit different but I will have to give it my best." Falkner tried his best to keep a brave face although the look in his eyes clearly showed how scared he was. He knew if his father was watching now he would not be very pleased. Falkner knew he had to try something to show he was a worthy gym leader and fast. As he mumbled to himself Quartz began to walk forward to begin her attack. Taking a deep breath she sent a gust of powdery snow towards Pidgeotto. The bird began falling towards the ground as it lost feeling in it's wings. Falkner finally remembered the ace up his sleeve and he had no choice but to use it. Just when Pidgeotto was about to hit the floor Falkner yelled " Pidgeotto quick before it is too late use Roost." Hearing it's trainers order Pidgeotto spang to life safely landing on the floor as it began to peck the snow out of it's feathers. Pidgeotto looked much better as it knocked most of the snow off of it's body. A few small areas were out of reach but Pidgeotto could at least feel it's wings again. As Falkner began to recover his nerves he was pleased to see Pidgeotto in rather good shape after such a powerful attack. He was not expecting such a hard battle against a Smoochum but he knew he needed to try and find a way to win. " That was a powerful attack but it will take more than power to defeat my Pidgeotto. This battle may be harder than I anticipated but I am going to give it my best effort to win." In his heart however he knew he was between a rock and a hard place with no exit in sight. Gym Battle

Quartz hopped around, fuming. She clearly did not appreciate health-recovery moves. She also seemed to think it was flat-out unfair for a Flying-type to not be K.Oed by her Powder Snow. The Smoochum danced around the roosting Pidgeotto, trying to tip it over, but doing nothing other than to annoy the large bird.
"Get back, Quartz!" Gwen urged, aware of the Pidgeotto's sharp talons and beak. Quartz may have been quick and light, but she took damage about as well as a piece of cardboard. Gwen wasn't even sure she could take a Wing Attack, let alone the bird's Roosting ability.
Falkner didn't seem to think so, however. He had a dejected look on his face as if the battle was already over. Gwen felt a pang of sympathy. Here he was, the very first Gym leader, be beaten constantly by a bunch of inexperienced little kids with a hastily-caught Mareep by their side. In fact, Gwen started wondering if he'd ever beaten anyone outside of the sages in Bellsprout Tower.
She made a decision. "Quartz, return!"
"Smoo?! Smoochum!"
"You're strong enough as it is," Gwen told her firmly. "And come on, this is unfair. Rona deserves a chance."
"Smooch," Quartz sulked.
"No, I'm not sending out Forrest! Return!"
Quartz disappeared into her ball. Gwen wasn't looking at Falkner, but she could bet he looked pretty happy. Even if Gwen still had no intentions of losing.
Rona landed lightly in the middle of the gym. She pricked her ears up, then sneezed at the smell of the birds and their various attributes covering the Gym.
"We'll need a ranged attack to hit it," Gwen decided. "Use Ember!" *** Gwen sent out Houndour! *** Houndour used Ember!

As the next round was about to begin Pidgeotto and Falkner thought for sure that Gwen would try and have her Smoochum use another Powder Snow in an attempt the force Roost to be used until there was nowhere for Pidgeotto to land so when Gwen decided to switch Pokemon Falkner was a bit relieved for the time being. The Pokemon she chose to switch to was a real surprise to Falkner as not only had he never seen a Houndour in real life but to make it even more special this one happened to be a shiny one. Falkner was a bit shocked by Rona's coloration but after a moment the gym leader began to speak. " This battle gets more exciting by the minute, I was not expecting a shiny Houndour in this battle at all." He may have been a bit surprised at the appearance of Rona but he had at least remembered to rule about switching Pokemon. " It is a real nice change of pace to see you use a different Pokemon but it does mean Pidgeotto will get a free attack. Pidgeotto use Roost again to recover every last bit of the energy you llst from our challengers Smoochum." As Falkner finished talking Pidgeotto landed to rest yet again this time making sure it did not miss any snow. By the time Pidgeotto had finished it was as if the bird had never been attacked at all. Feeling a lot more confident with his Pidgeotto fully healed Falkner began to wonder what Gwen was planning. He found it odd that she would give up a type advantage after just one round but he was not complaining. As Pidgeotto took flight again ready for another round Falkner began to think of a good strategy to make this battle even more interesting. It was then that an idea popped in his head as he overheard Gwen talking. Falkner had not had any experience fighting Houndour however it seemed that Rona had really fast reflexes even faster than Pidgeotto as the hellhound began to make her move. As Rona shot a few small embers towards Pidgeotto the bird shrieked as the hot temperature burned a few of it's feathers. As the attack subsided Falkner decided it was time to launch a ranged attack of their own. " That was a pretty strong ember but my Pidgeotto also happens to know a ranged attack. Pidgeotto use Mud Slap on that Houndour." As soon as the bird Pokemon heard it's order it headed for a giant puddle of mud on the far side of the gym and it proceded to fling a small amount of mud at Rona. The mud landed in the canine's eyes lowering her vision of the battlefield. As Rona tried to clear the mud out of her eyes Pidgeotto flew back over to Falkner. As the young gym leader noticed how effective the attack was he spoke again. " Nice shot Pidgeotto that ought to make this next round all the more interesting."Gym Battle

"You had a Ground move this whole time?" Gwen realized. "Unfair!"
"Daa!" Rona growled. Apparently, she didn't like getting mud in her coat.
"Keep trying to get it out, Rona," Gwen said urgently. She was terrified that her Pokemon wouldn't be able to land an attack. But canines had keen senses - she should be able to hit a big bird like Pidgeotto, even if it was agile.
"Get underneath it," Gwen instructed. "Um...when it tries using Mud-Slap again, Bite it! If not...Bite it anyways!"
Rona snarled. hopefully in agreement, and started to pace, waiting for an opening. *** Houndour used Bite!

Smiling with a bit of uncertainty, Gwen's outburst of his own Pokemon knowing a ground move caught him off guard. He wanted to laugh a little bit, Gym battles such as this were much more fun than typical electric on bird. Already he had faced a beautiful Spearow, that may have needed a bit more training but was still strong none the less, an overly cheeky Smoochum and now a glistening coated Houndour. He had also managed to use his signature move Roost. He didn't like to admit it but sometimes his Pokemon wouldn't be able to move fast enough to even use it in time to save their tail feathers. Even now, the Houndour had an ounce more agility than his own elegant bird. Regaining his composure with arms hanging by his side, his flicked his hair coolly and wore a more arrogant smirk. "Sometimes you need a move which will surprise your opponents. I trained my Pidgeotto that move to attack electric types but clearly, it is effective on others too." His smile waning as he noticed just how angry Rona had become since being covered with mud, her snarling snout caused him to back off some.
"A-Ahem. W-Well, my Pidgeotto knows another ranged attack aswell." Clapping his hands together, he gained the attention of his airborne avian. "Pidgeotto! Use your Gust attack!" Nodding back to it's trainer, the Pidgeotto turned to focus back on Rona when it was forced to flap backward with it's mighty wings. Using all her might, the Houndour was attempting to jump up, fangs gnashing as she tried to land a sneaky blow as the bird was distracted. Sinking her jaws into the body of the Pidgeotto, the avian grimaced painfully and with a frantic shake, forced Rona off. Landing back on all four paws, the blue hound began to circle her way cautiously around the ground, waiting for her next opening. Breathing much heavier this time, the Pidgeotto was the one who needed to use ranged attacks to keep Rona away, as another attack like that would finish the battle off. Lifting it's giant wings, the bird flapped, creating powerful slashes of wind that coursed through the air and struck the body of Rona sharply.
Noticing the slightly change in his Pidgeotto's breathing, Falkner folded his arms and smiled once again. This was becoming close but would Rona's accuracy let her down in the next round?

Gwen was impressed by Rona's agility. The little canine was holding her own very well against the bird, which, while it had plenty of room to maneuver in the air, became clumsier near the ground, where it had very little room to spread its wide wings.
Rona had gotten most of the mud out of her coat, partially thanks to the Gust attack, but her eyes still streamed. Gwen could only hope that her other senses would come through. Ember might be easier to land than a Bite, but the latter had clearly done more damage. Besides, she didn't want to risk blowing fire into the flammable walls and sending the whole place ablaze.
"Ready?" she cried, feeling a surge of excitement. "Bite!"
Rona yipped and pounced instantly. She was apparently ready to send Pidgeotto crashing to the ground. Was this is? Gwen wondered with bated breath. My first Gym Battle! It just might be! *** Houndour used Bite!

As Rona had gained the upper hand in the last round Falkner began to wonder if he should have used Roost again instead of attacking since Pidgeotto did not look very well. Falkner had to hope luck would be on his side this round so Pidgeotto would be able to heal again. Although Pidgeotto had fought very well up to this point but Falkner knew his Pokemon would not be able to take another Bite attack if Rona could stay on target despite her vison being reduced. " You have proven to be quite a wonderful opponent. I never expected such a young trainer to have such a wide assortment of Pokemon nor did I expect you to have a shiny Pokemon. Win or lose it has been a pleasure battling you." As he finished speaking Pidgeotto tried to stay aloft but the pain from the earlier bite made that a difficult task. Pidgeotto certainly did not want to get bit again and as such the bird was ready to try and make a move if Rona tried to attack. Sure enough the canine sped forward fangs shown to the world as she sped towards Pidgeotto. Falkner tried to warn Pidgeotto to evade the attack but before he could open his mouth the hellhound lunged at the bied and bit down on one of it's legs. Pidgeotto closed it's eyes as it shrieked out in pain before fainting as it crashed into the ground. Gym Battle

He began to walk towards Gwen with his hand in his pocket. As he reached her he took his hand out of his pocket and placed two items in Gwen's hand. " You have earned both of these items as a sign of your impressive victory. The first is the Zephyr Badge and the other is a technical machine that contains Roost my signature move. {{OOC: This is shameless character-based fluff. You have been warned.}}
Gwen waved as Falkner exited the gym. As soon as he was gone, Gwen exulted "YES!" and jumped around the room in celebration. Rona ran over to her, shaking away the last of the mud, and Gwen crouched down, cooing and running her hands through her fur.
That night, they held a party in their tiny Pokemon Center room. They had to be quiet so as to not wake up the other guests, but Gwen's Pokemon still managed to be sufficiently destructive. Gwen even managed to steal some of the Pokemon treats from the buffet table, which she shared among her Pokemon.
At one point, Quartz stood on the bed and let out a high-pitched Smoooo! It was off-key, but strangely relaxing. So relaxing that Tanner immediately tucked his head under his wing and dozed off.
"Are you Singing?" Gwen asked with a yawn. "Nice. Forget Sweet Kiss for it. Now shush, I wanna let you guys see the badge."
All four of her Pokemon crowded around. Gwen lifted the Zephyr Badge reverently and turned it in her hands so that everyone's faces were reflected in its surface. (She had polished it nonstop for a good three hours.)
"You all helped to get this," Gwen said earnestly. "It's as much mine as yours!"
Forrest, who had finally cheered up from his uncharacteristic bitter mood, seemed to turn sour all over again. Gwen threw a pillow at him, feeling too chipper to let him get her down. "Forrest, c'mon! It's not like you to be stubborn."
"Basa saur."
"That means...'You're playing favorites?' Don't be silly. Okay, time to draw pictures."
And so the four of them hunched over Gwen's sketchpad and watched her draw. Everyone giggled like a maniac at Tanner's caricature, which had big googly eyes and outstretched wings. Even Quartz settled down and started a drawing of her own. Everyone stayed quiet, huddled together, and stared in wonder as she actually sat quietly in the same spot for an entire ten minutes and scribbled. It ended up looking like a green blob sitting on a pink blob, but it was still impressive for a Pokemon who had to clutch crayons in stubby, fingerless limbs.
"Is that you and Forrest?" Gwen marveled. "It's beautiful!" The Bulbasaur burrowed underneath the blankets and hid, but Quartz beamed with pride.
After that, Gwen took requests. Most of them were of local or familiar Pokemon - all of Tanner's were of random bug Pokemon he had eaten over the last month - but Rona puzzled her by requesting a Vaporeon. It took about ten minutes for them to act it out. Much water was spilled. Then they played Guess-The-Pokemon-Gwen-Was-Sketching, which was difficult, considering all the guesses were either Bulbasaur, Spearow, Smoochum, or Houndour.
Finally, Gwen was too exhausted to go on. She neatly lined up her drawings of Mienfoo, Masquerain, Vaporeon, Swalot, bandanna-wearing Meowth, and who knew what else. Her Pokemon settled down, tired and happy, and Gwen drifted off.
And while she slept, Quartz threw all the drawings out the window because none of them were as good as hers. *** Smoochum forgot Sweet Kiss and learned Sing!
