Ray and his Pokemon Crew had just beaten the Violet City Gym and had decided to celebrate with a visit to the conveniently placed Ruins of Alph. Of course, Ray had been wanting to go down there for years. After all, he had a theory on this ancient mystery zone and this was his opportunity to prove it. If Ray was correct, the Ruins of Alph were once an underground civilization of creatures that were the evolutionary link between humans and Pokemon. Of course, Tails.EXE thought that was the stupidest thing he'd ever heard.
"Well it may be stupid," Ray retorted when the Abra expressed his opinion, "But it's also dumb."
The rest of the Pokemon on Ray's team were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but still leaned towards Tails.EXE's side on the matter.

The whole area was in shambles. Broken bits of the ruin scattered about, blocking off certain paths while also opening up new possibilities. Some of it had been moved around in order to make room for base locations whenever scientists visited, but otherwise everything was usually left just as it was in order to preserve whatever clues may be lying about. It was very important that nothing be destroyed or disturbed too much without careful cataloging, for within the ruins were various puzzles and cryptic messages; not to mention were rumoured to be the home of some very odd pokémon that weren't a fan of things being moved around on them. After passing the billboard warning visitors not to meddle with any of the structures, Ray and his companions headed for the nearest accessible building. It was dark, little square windows lining the outer walls being the only thing that allowed light into the ancient structure. There were many small corridors criss-crossing around, runes and images etched into the walls in various sizes, and generally just a ton to explore and investigate. Any noise echoed along the walls seemingly forever, and it was perhaps this that drew Ray's first visitor to his location. As the boy spoke with his psychic pokémon something emerged from the dark of one of the halls. It looked like a massive eyeball with a single horn coming straight up the center. Odd looking pokémon indeed. The being hovered closer, letting out a scratchy beeping noise as its warning to the intruders. A bizarre pokémon has approached! (LV 9)

While most would be freaked out by this mysterious creature, Ray was blinded with joy at this miraculous discovery.
"YES!!!!" He exclaimed, "They still live!!!"
Pulling out a poke ball, Ray summoned Princess Peach the Ralts to the field. If they played their cards right, the last of the Monsters that once ruled over these Ruins could be in his possession. Before giving his commands, Ray attempted to communicate an apology to the creature for the upcoming attack. He did so by imitating the noises the creature made to the tune of Bonetrousie.
"Princess Peach," he said, "use Confusion."

The eyeball on the ancient pokémon opened up wide with the shrill cry of excitement expressed by the intruder. It wasn't what it was used to, though, there was the odd scientist that just happened to get lucky enough one day to stumble upon an unown and react about the same way. The live exclamation point shuddered in reply, staring down with its normal placid expression at the pokémon thrown out to face the unown. The being gave another murmur of noises shortly before Ray attempted to communicate back. The unown blinked a couple times, eyelid curving into something of a confused look before it lit up in a brilliant light. Orbs of steely power formed in a rotating circle around the wild pokémon, glistening with a metal sheen as they moved. It was but half a moment before the circle of circles broke away from Unown and shot out like a saw against Princess Peach. The psychic type wailed in pain as the attack hit. She was blown back. Stars glittered in her eyes as she attempted to recover, barely making a stand after the blow. Still, though, she mustered the feeling for revenge and managed to send forth a burst of psychic energy against the unown. A whirl of energy encircled Unown. It blinked. The bored eye didn't change. It seemed Princess Peach's attack wasn't very effective. Battle Weather: Clear Unown | LV 9 | Levitate HP: 86% (26/30) Status: Normal Used Hidden Power (Steel)! VS

Well that could have gone better. It appeared that this "monster" was a Steel type. Of all the times for Ray to not have his water types handy. That didn't matter now, though. Time to break out one of his more exotic selections.
Come on back Peach," he said, allowing the Ralts to retreat, "Walt, get ready to Peck."
The strange Pokemon of bizarre origins entered the battlefield. Ray had his fingers crossed that this wouldn't knock this relic of evolution out. A creature like this could lead to revolutionary discoveries. Who knows? Maybe he was actually right about any of this.

With Peach off the stage the costumed spearow zipped on with a flash of light. His sharp eyes landed on the odd looking pokémon he was to face, squinting with a curiosity as once again the Unown lit up with a series of lights. They glinted with a metallic sheen and shot toward the bird, crashing into him with a solid force. Walt was momentarily a little breathless, not used to balls of light hitting with such a typing. Interesting. Now it was his turn though, the Za-pearow rushed forward with a flap of his wings. The long zapdos beak mounted on his head pecked the Unown just above its giant eye, causing the wild pokémon to flinch back with its eyelid closed. It was a close one. A little lower and its eyeball would have been in a whole new world of pain. The unown grumbled, eyelid narrowing into a more angry expression as it let loose another wave of steely power against Walt. Ray was starting to get a bit nervous. Capturing a Pokémon is so much harder when HP has to taken into consideration. However, an idea hatched in Ray's mind. If this Monster followed the same rules as Pokémon, perhaps paralysis could make capture easier.
"Walt," he said, nodding his costumed ally, "use Thunder Wave. We'll catch this monster yet."
As he gave the command, Ray had one hand in his backpack and was ready to break a Great Ball. However, he stood in wait for now.

Walt gave a light nod, the length of the beak extension making the motion far more exaggerated than it would have otherwise appeared. Bundling the energies of his special training, the quirky spearow began sparking. The Unown's eye opened wider, blinking once as if confused by this turn of events. Walt took advantage, getting in a little bit closer before unleashing a wide burst of electrical power. Unown shuddered. It could feel the effect of the burst, groaning its displeasure even though the move hadn't done any damage. Shaking itself, the wild ruin dweller again summoned up another burst of its own steely power. The orbs again thrashed poor Walt, causing him to stagger back. He huffed, quite winded by this point, but he had faith his trainer would succeed with the plan now that the zapearow had done its part. Battle Weather: Clear Unown | LV 9 | Levitate HP: 60% (18/30) Status: Paralyzed Used Hidden Power (Steel)! VS

Seeing the Pokémon succumb to the effects of the Thunder Wave, Ray knew his chance was nigh. Pulling out a Great Ball, Ray smirked with determination.
"Be you Pokémon or Human," he said, throwing the ball at this mysterious creature, "I, Ray Jafari, shall capture you now and forever!!!!!"
Now, all that was left was to anticipate the outcome. This left both Walt and Ray on the edge of their feet,

The unown didn't have much experience with the new fangdangled technology of those outside the ruins. It eyed the blue device with interest as the boy fondled it, seemingly waiting for the perfect moment to make use of it. The strange spearow didn't move forward to attack this time, signaling to the ancient lettered pokémon that it must be time. And so it was. Ray threw the great ball into the air. The capture device hit it's mark, the wild pokémon intrigued enough to see where this was going. Swiftly the ball sucked up the Unown then clattered to the ground to begin the process. It was short lived. There was nary a nudge before the great ball clicked its success and the light dimmed. Well that was easy. VICTORY!

At the sight of the Unown's capture, Ray's eyes bulged with excitement. He had just captured what may very well be the missing link between humans and Pokémon. "But what to name it," he thought out loud, "this monster has such a rich history yet naming it would be impossible." "For the love of Arborea, Ray!!!!" Tails.EXE shouted telepathically, "Your 'theory' is a bunch of...." "That's it." Ray said, "this monster is shaped like an exclamation point, so an exclamation is the perfect name. Thanks, buddy." With that out of the way, Ray continued his journey through these mysterious ruins to search for more mysteries and possibly more monsters. Word count: 1925/2000 Unown !Name: For the love of Arborea! The ruins were chalked full of glyphs and images, many seeming to match the style of the odd pokémon Ray had just captured. Endless scrawling in various blocks all housing various, but internally consistent, sized characters dominated every square inch of seemingly ever surface. The floor, ceiling, every wall, even little decorative outcroppings and natural nooks were etched with all the writing. Staring at the ruins surfaces one would find it very easy to lose themselves in it. While Ray indulged in the atmosphere, keeping his senses keened for any other visitors, another did fly in from above. A little crack as if something was being dislodged followed by a curtain of dust falling from the ceiling signaled the being's arrival. It circled the trainer, eying him just like the previous Unown, though this one had its single eye wide open as it scanned the ruins visitor. An Unown (LV 9) appeared!

This was truly a wonderful moment in time for science. There were more monsters to find and study throughout these Ruins?! Ray immediately pulled out a Pokeballs, this time planning on simply knocking the Monster out to study its natural makeup.
"Scout," he commanded, releasing his Rockruff to the field, "use Bite and let's see what these Monsters are really made of."

The ruins of Alph were home to many quirky Unown that seemingly enjoyed Ray’s company in the lonely cave. There was no telling when the next trainer would come thru to entertain them, so all of the little psychics wanted to greet their visitor with a battle.
The cold was cave from the winter frost outside, but it didn’t bother our psychic type. It watched carefully, wondering if the trainer would attack it. With a quick bolt, Scout charged forward at the psychic Pokemon and with a hardy bite, took out a decent chunk of the Pokemon’s hp. The letter spun around, shaken up after such an effective move. No doubt it was one of the dark type moves that were commonly associated with biting and crunching. Unown took in energy and expelled a series of glowing orbs, its Hidden Power attack! It watched to see if the Rockruff would take a large sum of damage as well, but the puppy looked unphased by it. Dang it! Battle Weather: Null Unown | Level 9 | Levitate | HP: 33% (10/30) Status: Normal Used Hidden Power (Rock)! VS
Rockruff | Level 10 | Keen Eye | HP: 78% (25/32) Status: Normal Used Bite!

Ray was extremely tempted to catch this particular Monster as well, but decided against it. It was only fair considering the fact that this was their home and it would be cruel to take them all away from it.
"Ok Scout," he said, "one last Bite and the fight should be ours. Go for it."
Ray seceretly hoped this bite wouldn't be to harmful to the Monster in question. Brutal physical attacks always did make him whim even a little bit.
