As the leaves all around them began to change color, Venom and Ekans entered the National Park. The season of autumn had just began, and now that he'd earned his first gym badge, that meant that it was finally time for Venom to participate in Johto's famous Bug Catching Contest. After taking a deep breath, and getting a big grin, Venom made his way over to the tall grass, very excited to begin the hunt for Bug type Pokémon. Bug type Pokémon may not have been his preferred type of Pokémon, but having come all the way to Johto for his journey, the Poison type trainer couldn't resist the chance to take part in this competition. He'd heard many good things about it, and was in it to win it, or at least give it his best shot. Once he and Ekans were a few feet into the tall grass, Venom dropped to the ground, and began crawling on the ground right alongside Ekans, trying to be as sneaky as possible.
The ninja hoped that all of his training would help him find a rare and powerful Bug type Pokémon, before a rare and powerful Bug type Pokémon found him. "Stay quiet Ekans. The second we spot something, get ready to strike." Venom whispered to his serpentine friend, slowly making his way along the floor of the park. "Ekans. Ekans." Ekans glanced at her trainer, and gave him a nod, ready to attack any Bug type Pokémon that they saw through the tall grass. Neither of them was sure what to expect at this point, but Venom knew that if he was to win this contest, he'd have to use his fifteen Sport Balls wisely. Venom was secretly hoping to find a Scyther or a Pinsir, knowing from past Bug Catching Contests he'd seen or read about that if he caught one of those two Bug types he was almost guaranteed to win. Even so, he kept his eyes and ears open for any and all Bug types around him.

Sport Balls Left: 15 1/5 Encounters Kricketune [Swarm]: -1 ATK Ekans [Intimidate]: Normal As the pair slithered softly through the sea of tall grasses they'd spot a striking red color equally quietly slinking around. It was large, and made a clicking noise occasionally. It was easy enough to follow being that it wasn't camouflaged at all in the grass, though seemed to be heading for the fall colored bushes and tree line nearby. While it hadn't seen Venom and Ekans at all yet the wild pokémon stopped a moment and looked behind; getting the feeling it was being watched.

The second they'd heard the clicking sound, Venom and Ekans stopped, and slowly turned in the direction of the sound. It was the one and only sound they'd heard besides the gentle autumn breeze that blew by on occasion, but it was still plenty quiet enough for them to make it out. The Poison type pair could also see the very distinct red color through the tall grass, as they began to make their way over to it to investigate. Venom's eyes went a bit wide the moment they saw it in full view, as the ninja never expected to find such a big catch so early in the game. "I don't believe it. A Kricketune. Ive never seen one before." Venom stated with a whisper, then grinned right at the cricket Pokémon. "Lets catch it Ekans. This one's good, but we can always release it if we find something better later."
Venom spoke to his own Pokémon, knowing the rules of the contest. "Ekans." Ekans gave her trainer a nod, then fixed her serpentine gaze on her first opponent of the day. Just before Kricketune could get to the safety of the autumn bushes, Venom and Ekans suddenly jumped out of the tall grass without any warning. "Don't let it get away Ekans! Use your Glare attack!" Venom had already planned this strategy ahead of time, knowing that he'd probably get more points in the contest for bringing back his chosen Bug type Pokémon unharmed. "Ekans! Ekans!" The snake Pokémon rattled her tail, and glared right at the wild Bug type Pokémon, trying to paralyze it. As Ekans did this, Venom reached for one of his Sport Balls, getting ready to throw it at Kricketune if this works.

Sport Balls Left: 15 1/5 Encounters Kricketune [Swarm]: -1 ATK, Paralyzed Ekans [Intimidate]: Normal As the duo popped out of their hiding place the Kricketune whipped around to see them. Startled, it couldn't help but catch the paralytic gaze of the serpent and thus be rendered even more helpless than it had been before. Muscles spasming, Kricketune wobbled toward Ekans and made a haphazard swipe at her with one of its pointed arms. She was lightly scratched along her side.

Venom smiled when Ekans' Glare took effect, but he knew that Ekans couldn't take too many hits in a contest like this one. As tough as she was, Ekans was Venom's one and only Pokémon for this contest, and they had no way of knowing what sorts of other bug types they'd face from here on out. Plus, Venom knew that if Ekans faints, their time in the bug catching contest would automatically be over, and the ninja wasn't about to let that happen. "Good work Ekans, now lets give this a try! Get it Sport Ball!" The Poison type trainer yelled out, then threw one of his Sport Balls right at the paralyzed Kricketune with all his might. After the ball hit, and Kricketune got sucked inside, Venom and Ekans started to watch the orb closely as it shook back and forth, hoping that their first insect of the day would stay inside.

It sunk into the grass and wobbled, grass swaying along with the motions as the device held tight. It was nearly onto the third round of shakes when a crack could be heard and the bug type leapt back out. Its long razor arms primed the wild pokémon lunged for Ekans and made another swipe.

Venom kept his eyes narrowed at the Sport Ball, as it continued to shake back and forth. However, when the sphere burst open, and Kricketune landed another attack on Ekans, the ninja gained an expression of slight frustration. "Crap. That looks like Fury Cutter its using. It might not be very effective against a Poison type like Ekans, but it gets stronger every time it hits. Even Ekans wont be able to take many more of those." Venom spoke to himself, once again reminded that if Ekans faints, their out of the contest.
It was then that Venom decided that if they were to capture this Bug type, they'd have to strike back against it. "Time to go on the offensive Ekans! Give it your Bite attack!" Venom decided to go with Ekans' flinch inducing attack, but he also didn't want to cause the cricket Pokémon too much damage, as he knew it would score them more points the more HP it had. "Ekans!" Tired of taking this bug's punishment, Ekans rattled her tail, opened her jaws up wide, and slithered straight for her prey. Venom hoped this would be enough to make Kricketune stay inside the next Sport Ball he already had in his tight grip.

Sport Balls Left: 14 1/5 Encounters Kricketune [Swarm]: -1 ATK, Paralyzed Ekans [Intimidate]: Normal Ekans attack was wicked, crunching down on Kricketune's already weakened body. It certainly felt the sting on that one! Somehow, even through the paralysis, the bug managed to dive in with another swipe at Ekans. The resourceful bug certainly made a dent into the snake Pokemon's HP.

Watching the battle scene between the snake and cricket Pokémon unfold right before his eyes, Venom knew he'd have to have a healing item ready for Ekans after it was all said and done. However, right now, his focus was on Kricketune, and the Sport Ball he still held in his grip. The ninja knew this damaged Bug type Pokémon probably wouldn't earn them enough points to win the contest, but he figured they'd probably find something better further down the line. Besides, it was better then nothing if they didn't. "Okay, lets give this one more try. Sport Ball go!" Taking aim, Venom threw his second Sport Ball at the wild Bug type, hoping that this one would do the trick.

Before it knew it, another sports ball was heading its way. It quickly broke free! But in its paralysis, it was unable to move.

Upon watching the cricket Pokémon break free from a second Sport Ball, Venom's frustration grew even more, as he grit his teeth once again. It was then that the ninja came to a decision, after considering all of his options of course. "We've wasted enough time on this Bug type Ekans! Lets just beat it, and move onto the next one we can find!" Venom hated just giving up on his first find like this, but the contest wasn't gonna go on forever. Besides, the Poison type trainer figured they'd probably find something better along the line anyway.
After taking a minute to catch her breath, Ekans glanced at her trainer and nodded in agreement with him. "Ekans. Ekans." Venom quickly gave his Pokémon a nod in return, then turned back to Kricketune. Venom still wasn't too happy about doing this, but Kricketune was already injured anyway, and the ninja figured it probably wouldn't be enough to win this contest in its current condition anyway. "Alright then, use your Bite attack again Ekans! Then Bite it again after that!" Upon hearing her trainer's commands, Ekans gathered her strength, and slithered right for her Bug type foe once more. "Ekans!"

As the first bite came in Kricketune steeled itself. Holding steady and unmoving, focusing all of its pain for undoubtedly a return in kind later on. But it would never come. Ekans lashed forward with another strong chomp and brought the oversized cricket down in the tall grass just as ordered.  Ekans grew to LV 20 and gained +1 Happiness! (+3) She would like to learn Acid; forget an old move? |

With the battle over, Venom let out a sigh. It was partly out of relief, and partly because of his and Ekans' current situation. It was great that they won the battle, but that's not really what this contest is all about. And speaking of the contest, it was nearly half over by this time, and the Poison type duo had nothing to show for it. But before moving on, Venom figured Ekans could use a little recharge after taking so much damage in her last battle. The ninja walked over to his Pokémon, knelt down to her, and pulled out a potion.
"Here Ekans. You did a good job." Venom said to her, then sprayed her with the potion to heal her injuries. "Ekans." Ekans blushed slightly at her trainer's praise, then winced a little when he sprayed her with the potion. The pain quickly faded away though, as a good number of her injuries were healed. Once that was done, Venom stood back up, and turned to a new area of the national park. "We cant give up yet Ekans. We're still in this contest, and we're gonna win. Lets go find an even better Bug type Pokémon." Venom spoke to his Pokémon in a confident tone, then walked off to a new area of the park, as Ekans followed right up next to him, sharing in his confidence.
OOC: Potion used on Ekans, and don't teach her Acid. Thank you kindly.

As the poisonous duo found their second opponent, Venom decided to make another capture attempt. Looking up at the wild Butterfree, he narrowed his eyes, and pointed up at it. "Time for round two Ekans! Use Glare!" The ninja used the same strategy he used against Kricketune, and hoped he and Ekans would fair better this time around. "Ekans!" Ekans obeyed her trainers orders just like always, slithering forward, and giving the Bug/Flying type Pokémon her best Glare attack. As Ekans fulfilled her command, Venom got another Sport Ball ready to go. He and Ekans still had no Bug types to show the judges at the end of the contest, so he hoped this would be their first catch.
