Chapter 1: New Bark TownHe was more excited about this than he initially thought he would be.
After the old man had booted him from their family home, he fought with Tammy for a while about whether her idea had been a good one or not. Start a journey to stay off the streets. Pokecenters were free weren't they? Minus all of the fancy things he was offered at hotels his family would stay in on trips to other regions, he would just have to make due with what he was given. And while admittedly at first he had hated Tammy's idea of sending him to Johto to receive a first Pokemon and head out on this journey, now that Watercress was sitting on his shoulder, he was starting to like the idea more and more.
It had been a tough choice to make too, having to choose between Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Each one of them had their own appeal and reasons as to why it would be a good idea to pick them. But compared to the Squirtle and Charmander he had been given the chance to hace, there was just something different about Watercress. And so she became his first Pokemon, and once he had made a double trip back to the lab for his Pokedex, he was ready to go and see what the first day of trainerhood had to offer.
"Ready, Cress? I promise, no more stops at the lab, I'm sure I have everything this time!" he sounded confident, even if he wasn't sure it was the whole truth. Watercress gave him a nod, sure that she was ready to get as far away from the insufferable pair that had been Charmander and Squirtle and so to say, leave them in the dust. 'Anywhere is probably better than this Lab.' She assured him, giving him enough of a visual cue with the nod to make him understand that they were good to go. Blaine began moving forwards, speaking to his Bulbasaur almost nervously as they walked along. "You know, I heard some people say direct eye contact between trainers means they have to battle. Does that mean I should always look down at my shoes if we don't want to battle?" Watercress could tell he was a little nervous, and so she extended a vine and gently placed it over his other shoulder, taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly. He slowly did the same and smiled. "You're right, let's just see what happens."

It was a fine day for the oddly colored young bird to be out and about. Normally one of it's species would only be found at night but of late it had to live on it's own instead with the rest of the flock. They were just jealous! Not every Hoothoot could have such a lovely plumage as this one had... but the others were jealous and didn't want this one around their dull brown brood. Well, it would just show them! The little bird would make it's own way in the world.
The sounds of human speech reached Hoothoot's ears. Peering against the brightness of the days sun it flew to investigate and landed a short distance away. Hoothoot was going to keep intruders away from the little tree it had claimed. Any trainer or tame pokemon that wanted by would have to fight for the right to pass!
Hoothoot is blocking your way and is ready to fight!

Chapter 1: New Bark TownBlaine had never seen a Hoothoot before. After all, they weren’t exactly native to his region, which was more focused on the flying types of Sinnoh like Starly and well...he hadn’t exactly paid much attention in class, but there were other flying types too, he was sure. Thankfully, he did grab that little booklet from professor Elm on the way out of the lab, and it would probably be useful. But supposing he shouldn’t take to long because the Butterball of a bird didn’t look very happy, he slid the booklet out of his pocket and pointed it towards the avian after he had flipped it open. Hoothoot, the Owl Pokemon. It has a perfect sense of time. Whatever happens, it keeps rhythm by precisely tilting its head in time.” The electronic voice rang. It had a...head? It just looked like a giant circle to him. A circle with feet. ”Wait a second...this one doesn’t look like the one on the screen.” He said to Watercress, giving her a look at his Pokedex. ”Either way, we might want to take of it before it decides to take care of us.” Watercress hopped from his shoulder and landed opposite the Hoothoot. ”What did you know again? Oh right, Tackle!” The Bulbasaur nodded before charging forward. OOC: Watercress uses Tackle!

Chapter 1: New Bark TownSure and Blaine were two words that wouldn't fit very well together in a sentence right now. Because he couldn't exactly be sure of what was going on as the two Pokemon clashed against one another. There was something thrilling but also terrifying about it all. Sure, thrilling because in front of him, taking place before his eyes, was the clash of two tiny titans, fighting for the right to a...tree? Did they even want that tree? He supposed it didn't matter if they did or not, because the bird was not hearing anything about it.
What was terrifying was that he was worried about Watercress as she slid back into place. "Watercress! Are you alright?" Watercress pulled up a vine and waved him off, as though she could take another hit and be just fine. Blaine nodded at her, though he sort of took a moment to wonder why she didn't use those vines of hers to fight. Did she not know how? It was probably a question for later, or maybe even a question for his Dexette. But he would worry about it later, right now they had a battle to fight.
"I'm still not sure why you want to fight us so bad little dude. Don't you just want to chill out, have a snack? I have a few in my bag, we'd be happy to give some to you if you wanted." He pulled out a small cake filled with questionable filling, the kind that he had loved as a kid, but questioned as an adult. Questioned? Yes. Was it affordable for someone who had no money and didn't really have a choice even if he wanted to eat something else?
Also yes.
"And I'm just saying, if you joined us, there'd be plenty of food where that came from." And by food, he meant whatever they could buy on discount, but the bird didn't need to know that. He held out the snack towards the bird, and Watercress knew what he was doing, she just didn't hold out hope it would actually work.
OOC: Trying to charm the bird into capture with a snack, no move used this turn.

The golden bird huffed. Chest feathers puffing out to make the already bulbous bird even more rotund than usual. It squinted warily at the trainer and his cabbage pokémon. No way could it possibly lose to this pair. Or so the wild owl had convinced itself. Through squinted eyes it watched Blaine. Curious as to why the boy hadn't eagerly called out another attack for his bulbasaur. The kid was up to something, obviously, but of all the devious ploys that played through Hoothoot's mind it never would have guessed what was to come. Hoothoot blinked, completely flabbergasted, at the offering. Not only was it a token of peace but an offering to belong. It had no idea what to say. Someone wanted it? The idea warmed its little heart, a figurative blush toning its feathers. Was it a trick? The small owl hopped forward, switching legs midair and hesitating on its new spot. A lure to get it away from the territory it had just moments ago claimed? Another hop closer. Or maybe it was the real deal? Another hop. The peg leg bird was still very cautious of Blaine but the potential for truly being wanted was too much to resist. The golden bird flapped its stubby wings and released a soft hoot. However, the first thing to respond to the little bird's call was neither Blaine nor Watercress. Like a turbo rototiller a streak of stout brown feathers tore its way out of the bush and smacked the young hoothoot with a broad wing. The worn talons sticking awkwardly out of its spindly legs tore up pits of dirt in its wake as it went for the treat. Eyes bulging strangely out of its head the larger avian plucked the cake from Blaine's hand and made to rush away with a flurry of its wings. The movement was far from graceful. Noctowl landed just a few feet away teetering on one leg for a second or two before managing to find its balance. It spun its head all the way around, back still facing the others in its company, the cake secured in its beak. It didn't look to plan on eating it, but it was hard to tell exactly what it was focusing on with its lazy eyes. An angry sputter of hoots erupted from the shiny one. Death glares and array of noises that could only be described as some sort of growl bombarded the old disheveled bird. Hoothoot turned to Blaine once it was done with a considerate look. This was as good a test as any. If the lad was at all truthful with his offer then certainly he'd help get Hoothoot's treat back. Chapter 1: New Bark TownSurprised was the most mild of words Blaine could have used to provide you a description of the surprise he felt as the little golden avian hopped closer to him, inspecting the snack in his hands. He was almost sure it was dumb luck, as a lot of the books he read said that wild Pokemon were usually hostile, and that the best way to capture them was to battle. But here was this bird, so fierce just moments ago, ready to pluck the little snack from his hands. Did he think it meant it wanted to be captured? Maybe not, Blaine was simple, but not naive. But was food possibly the best way to communicate with things that didn't speak your language?
Sure, he'd chuck a snack cake at a HootHoot, but it was probably best not to do it to another human being.
"So is that a-- OH SWEET ARCEUS ABOVE WHAT THE FU--" he stumbled back as a much larger force snatched the cake from his hands, and Cress took a defensive position as the thing landed across from her. Blaine, who had landed on his butt in the process of freaking out about meeting a Pokemon that was much larger than either Cress or the Hoothoot, had slowly stood back up. "What in the world is that thing Dexette?" he asked as he flipped open the little booklet once again.
"Noctowl, the Owl Pokemon. When it turns its head entirely upside down, you know it's troubled by something. If you don't leave it be, it will peck you." This one with its crazy eyes, certainly looked the type to do so. Blaine grimaced at her explanation and glanced down at the Hoothoot, who was sputtering at the other bird before it turned and nodded at him. "Right, Cress looks like we've got some flier power on our side now." Cress sighed.
'That better not have been a pun of some sort.' she turned back towards the Noctowl, awaiting orders. "Alright, Cress use your Tackle again and Hoothoot...er...well what do you know? Tackle? I think I saw you use that earlier." he hoped he was right, or if he was that bad at giving an order that Hoothoot could at least fend for itself while Cress assisted.
OOC: Cress uses Tackle. Also thanks Lamont! I was wondering why those werent going.

The old noctowl ruffled up his feathers not unlike a well used feather duster. Its goggled eyes rolled to glance the golden hoothoot then to the bulbous pokémon standing beside, then onto the ragged boy stumbling over orders. It fanned its wings and gargled a drawn out attack hoot half a second before the wild bird began stepping toward the smaller pokémon. Like before the grandpa noctowl's gait was less than inspiring. Somewhere between a limp and a skip it teetered forth, no one quite sure exactly which of the two it was heading for. It seemed it was possibly going for the young owl but once it had closed in the disheveled ball of crazy hopped to the side to stand before Watercress and launch into her. While much larger, the senior pokémon was much much lighter than expected. The attack mostly swept across the bulbasaur's back, causing her to tumble head over heels backward as the grandad swept by and did a short slide on its belly across the fresh grass. Noctowl was slow to rise, and even slower to regain what shred of balance it managed to hold onto normally. Opportunity was ample for Cress to get orientated back on her feet, spin around, and make her own charge at the tall bird. The impact brought Grandpa to hopping on one leg with wings flapping. It didn't seem overly damaged by the force, just the stout bulbasaur was the perfect height to get under the nocturnal avian's center of gravity. Hoothoot didn't waste time following up. Hopping along using alternate legs the shiny pokémon sprung into its family member's side. It did the trick. With the second impact Noctowl fell over in a flail of feathers. His beak nearly lost its grip on the piece of cake. Hoothoot was quickly on a roll toward its Grandpa's captive treat, attempting to snatch it away, but the larger owl kicked Hoothoot away. As if it was running on its side the old owl spun on its side in a half circle using its feet to dig awkwardly into the ground. It then made to stand again, now facing the pair and their trainer. It coughed a hoot and shook itself free of some clinging dirt. Chapter 1: New Bark TownBlaine was an honest person from time to time, and honestly speaking, he wasn't too sure how this battle was going for them. Cress looked a little worse for ware now, and slowly he withdrew something from his pack. A small blue bottle, he called Cress over and leaned down in front of her. "Here, I think this is what the books say always help." Cress winced as he sprayed the contents onto her skin, but she almost instantly started to feel a lot better. He thought about using one on Hoothoot, but the book said wild pokemon were particularly nervous around man made items. So he sighed and placed the empty bottle in his pack as cress returned to her place. "Alright girl, go for another tackle, er, you too, Hoothoot." He hoped that the bird didn't mind. Maybe he was a human, but it wanted it's snack cake back right?
The old bird was off its rocker, but he wondered if there was another reason that it was doing this in the first place. It was interested in something other than the cake, Blaine could tell by the fact it hadn't eaten it yet. If that was the goal it would be gone, right? He glanced at Hoothoot. "You've got friends around here don't you?" Hoothoot and Noctowl were one in the same, right? He just hoped that if this one came with him and evolved well...it wouldn't be so....
so....
Crazy eyed?
OOC: Blaine took a turn to heal Cress with a Potion, then ordered both Cress and HootHoot to use Tackle.

He was a tough old bird for sure. With thick feathers fluffing up the already abnormally stout body Grandpa Noctowl's head was nearly the same ratio. It was no wonder why he had such a time of simply moving around. Overall anyways. In short bursts the old coot seemed to overcome the rickety chopsticks it had for legs. As Watercress retreated a little in order to receive the treatment from Hoothoot twisted around in disbelief. Not quite understanding why it was being left alone, even just momentarily, on the front lines it made a bit of a fuss. Though of course that wasn't true and the wild bird soon realized its overreaction; if a little late. By the time the shiny pokemon had spun back around to face its elder it was being overshadowed by a pair of eyes bearing down on it. Hoothoot shrunk back and covered its eyes, moving its stubby wings over top as if the skinny things could even possibly cover the over-sized orbs stuck in its head. Though, even if the arms did nothing the hypnotic pulse from the noctowl stooped over the smaller bird was interrupted. Without even opening its eyes Hoothoot sprung upward to bop Grandpa Noc right in the chin. His head swung back harshly, eyes literally spinning in their sockets as they turned skyward. The treat was dislodged from his beak and sent flying into the bush aside. Noctowl released a craggy hoot, wings fanning as it shook its head to regain its balance. When Hoothoot landed there was no where to run. Boxed in by the large span of feathers. Grandpa Noc lowered his head and lurched forward, butting the rotund fledgling back toward Blaine in a light daze. By this time Watercress was already motoring back into action. She was at a run by the time the crazy-eyed bird had the attention to give her. He snapped his beak menacingly, but it was just a bark. Cress rammed through the old timer, sending him wobbling off to the side. At Blaine's word of instruction Hoothoot regained its composure. Huffing with determination it got its tiny wings in a flurry. After a few hops forward the ball of an owl was in the air zooming its way toward the elderly avian. Another tackle landed right in Grandpa Noc's belly, causing an involuntary wheezy hoot from the cake snatcher, but ultimately the smaller rotund owl bounced off. Once it had shuffled a few shaky steps back away from the shrubbery edging their battlefield, Grandpa Noctowl turned his bulging eyes onto Blaine. With a scrutinizing look, and a puff of his chest, he croaked another challenging hoot before snapping his sharp beak. This got a reaction from the golden owl. Hoothoot excitedly chirped, a hint of shrill worry in its tone, then began looking all around. The cake. Grandpa Noctowl didn't have it anymore. Hoothoot looked to Blaine expectantly. The old owl blustered, rustling its wing feathers and scratching at the ground not unlike an agitated rooster. Chapter 1: New Bark TownThe Old Timer wasn't so easily distracted and continued the battle even as Blaine healed Cress. He was getting worried about Hoothoot and its health, but he wasn't so sure after what had happened before that it would accept a potion from him. The books told him Pokemon were proud like that out in the wild. As the cake flew out of the Noctowl's beak, Blaine traced where it went with his eyes. It flew into the bushes nearby, and he knew Hoothoot might not trust him if he didn't get it for the Pokemon. "Cress, distract that old bird with a Tackle! Hoothoot, I need you to help us out with a tackle too!" he said, a little more confident the bird would follow his order if he wanted the cake. If it made the Pokemon feel better, he'd even accept the Butterball taking it as a suggestion.
As the Pokemon fought, he dove into the bushes where he had seen the cake fly. He searched about on the ground, the bush rustling as he attempted to find the sweet treat that Noctowl had stolen from them. Finally, his hand felt something squishy, and he grabbed it. "Found it!" he called as he popped up from the bushes. But now that he thought about it, as he held this thing over his head, it was...heavier....and much, much squishier. Looking up, he soon realized he was holding a startled Wurmple. "Or...not." He dove back into the bushes and quickly released the thing, watching as it scurried as far away from him as possible, and when it was out of his view (he hadn't used dexette as an apology to the thing) he popped back out of the bushes with the cake, this time clutched tightly to his person. "I got it Hoothoot! I can give it to you once we finish this!"
OOC: Blaine told Cress and Hoothoot to use Tackle. Also hope the Wurmple thing was okay, I didn't count it as encounter (obviously) or towards Blaine's Pokedex, it just felt like the comedic thing to do.

There was no hesitation from the grass pokémon. Watercress trundled forward into a steady run to cover her trainer. The large stout owl already has his googly eyes awkwardly locked onto the boy as he started toward the bushes so she would route to cut off any direct path for Blaine. Hoothoot was just as distracted watching the trainer dive into the depths of spring shrubbery. Crackling branches and thorny stalks barely covered with a veil of new leaves swept across his jacket as he went digging for the savory offering. Noctowl made an odd noise. Almost an onomatopoeia of flabbergasted. He raced for the bush, or rather the determined bulbasaur heading off the path to the greenery. His head twisted sideways as he went, eyes gorged with a solid lock on the trainer and his pokémon, and beak snapped threateningly once again. With wings half spread in order to keep enough lift to offset the wobble of his gate it looked as if Cress and Grandpa Noctowl were in a heated game of torchicken. The elder leapt at the last moment, seeming about to glide over the bulbous pokémon and deliver a sharp nip into her back. But that's not what happened. Maybe a younger, more... with it... noctowl would have been able to pull off such a maneuver. Grandpa's creaky old leg, however, didn't give the push off he wanted and he instead ended up face planting into Cress' forehead. The two tackled into one another. Noctowl's speed won over the bulbasaur's density just enough for the ruffled avian's rotund stature to bowl over itself and careen head-over-heels along the grass type's back. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Though, crazy grandpa was momentarily dazed. The golden hoothoot was too busy for all that though. Of course it was paying enough attention to keep tabs on the other combatants, but its real interest was with Blaine; and the cake. Soon the boy was springing up from the foliage to triumphantly display what was promised to the wild bird! Hoothoot hopped a few steps forward in utter glee before stopping dead at the realization of what was in the kid's hands: a wurmple. Hoothoot's beak dropped for a second before seizing up with disappointed anger. What trickery! The sparkling owl turned away to pout, falling back into the dark thoughts that had been with it before the encounter had all started. The delay allowed the old geezer back to his senses. He flopped over and struggled to his feet like a drunkard. Hoothoot looked to the elder owl and considered, unable to hide its feelings with those giant red eyes. But then, Blaine returned. With some pleading hope Hoothoot glanced to the boy escaping the underbrush and saw it. Just as the words were spoken Hoothoot saw the cake cradled securely in Blaine's grasp. It was Hoothoots. Blaine said so. Even after all this, through the crazed ambush from Grandpa and digging through sodden bush on his hands and knees with spiny branch poking all the way, Blaine had done it all for Hoothoot. Grandpa Noc could see the joyous change in the young owl's visage before anything else. Where just a second ago it had given up now it as full of spark. Hoothoot charged at the deformed elder and delivered a sound tackle just as Blaine had asked it to before. It was a little late, but still honored. After recovering from getting the wind knocked from his lungs once again, Grandpa Noctowl chuckled as well as a bird could do such a thing. Before the golden ball of a baby owl could scurry out of reach he wrapped his wings around the young one and brought it in for a hug. It cooed calmly after a quick nuzzle then released the hoothoot, giving it a small push toward Blaine. Hoothoot chirped happily. The first time it had been happy in a long time. It could hardly wait to be at Blaine's feet, eagerly awaiting both the treat and, more importantly, the promise of companionship that was promised with it. Grandpa Noc followed slowly behind with a bit of a labored huff. He stopped a safe distance away so as to not risk any discomfort considering his apparently hostility but moments ago. Popped-out eyes watched with a twinkle of pride. He waited patiently while the two interacted, thankful for the reprieve. Soon it could get back to lounging around the forest, but first... The old bird began hacking. Its body moved rhythmically as it pushed from the depths of its, very short, neck into its throat and finally to a spit. With a dry splattering of hot air a bright blue seed shot out of Grandpa Noc's beak and bounced a little ways towards Blaine. After a smack of its tongue and shake of its head to regather itself, the crotchety owl looked up to Blaine then to the berry it had just offered expectantly. Hoothoot cheerily waved to its Grandpa, of which was replied to with a squeaky hoot, then the old owl turned round and made to leave with some difficulty taking to the air. Grandpa Noc approves of Blaine! He left a Coba Berry as a token PASSED!

Chapter 1: New Bark TownWhile Grandpa Bird (as Blaine had taken to calling him in his head), seemed hostile only moments ago, he seemed to have calmed down, and that single Rattata that kept the gears spinning in his brain helped him make the connection from Grandpa Bird to the Butterball. Related, or so he thought. He had been wrong before, but it seemed like Grandpa bird had calmed now, and that made Blaine feel better. Not...that he really understood why the cooty old bird had been so ornery in the first place. Whatever the case, it seemed that all was well now, and it was only moments before the bird tumbled to his feet. Blaine knelt down just as Watercress joined them, placing her paws on his knees. "...I don't get it, what do you want little guy?" Watercress gave a sigh. Blaine would be Blaine no matter the situation, it seemed. She reached a vine down to his belt where the Pokeballs sat and snatched an empty one. Crimson eyes locking with Blaine's Violet ones, she proceeded to unceremoniously toss the Pokeball at the bird, sucking it into the ball, and thanks to the bird being just as eager, it soon stopped moving. Blaine blinked and picked up the ball. "Oh. Wait I thought he wanted the food..." A heavy sigh from his Bulbasaur, but he smiled nonetheless. "But this is fine too. I don't mind the extra company." He said to her, and the Bulbasaur nodded in a sage manner. Blaine clipped the Bird's ball onto his belt after deciding to name him Butterball, and motioned for Watercress that they should keep moving. Who knew what else the day had in store? As Blaine continued fog came crawling in from the nearby sea, it was cold and humid and lowered the visibility a little. The road towards Cherrygrove was easy to follow so as long as he didn't leave that one, the chances of getting lost were slim. It would be harder to find any wild pokemon should he been looking for any of those as they often kept their distance, and now they easily disappeared in the fog. He could hear them shuffling around living their daily life but he couldn't see any of them and they were gone before he got close enough. A rattata came limping but the moment it noticed a trainer it froze and scurried off into the undergrowth, it had seemed scared. A bit further ahead a pidgey was sitting in a tree preening, and chirping to itself. It was completely oblivious to a shadow moving in the fog close to the tree and which moved closer to it. It did notice Blaine though, and it paused what it was doing to look at him warily before deciding it was best to leave and avoid battle. "Dammit!" A voice exclaimed when the bird flew away, it came from the shadow which had been visible before. A red haired boy stepped out from the fog and glared at Blaine. "Thank you for chasing it away," he snapped, "it's not like this stupid fog makes it any harder before you came and destroyed it all." His eyes darted to Watercress and with a flick of his wrist he released a cyndaquil. "I hope you know how to battle, since you are getting one now. That's the least you can do even if you are as much a weakling as the last kid I beat," the boy continued and crossed his arms. Red-haired Brat are annoyed you chased off his opponent and wants to battle you instead. He has a [lvl 8] Cyndaquil. (ooc: you still need to pick an ability for Butterball, if you want to use him in battle) 1-42p7TLv41T

Chapter 1: New Bark TownThe fog had rolled in much faster than he realized. That distraction with the crazy old Grandpa Bird had been enough to completely take his attention away from the weather. As he walked with Cress at his side, he pulled two Pokeballs from his belt. The two Pokemon his sister had given him...He didn't really know what to do with them, apparently they were Pokemon she had hatched while abroad. Did that make them fancy Pokemon? Fancy things normally came from his sister's trips abroad, so maybe it was the same with Pokemon. Still, that made him a little nervous to send them out. He continued walking at a brisk pace. Watercress seemed calm, but the noises around them made him a little nervous.
"Are you not at all concerned about what's around us? What if something like the crazy Grandpa Owl comes swooping at us? I certainly don't want anything turning you into a midday salad..." he said to Cress, who shrugged it off. 'If they are snatching anyone it's probably going to be you. You look meatier.' she cooed, not expecting Blaine to understand as they continued onwards, the boy on his phone, so focused it made Cress think he could fumble and fall any moment.
Blaine didn't notice the boy or his escaped quarry until it was too late. Blaine looked up just as the thing flew off. "Oh man sorry dude, I mean in this fog I can barely see my nose in front of my face, didn't mean to spook...whatever that was." He said, turning to the Red haired boy. "Wait what? Battle? I don't know if we can really do that with all this fog...though..." he looked at the creature at the boy's feet, and brought out Dexette. "Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokemon. It is timid, and always curls itself up in a ball. If attacked, it flares up its back for protection." He clicked Dexette shut and sighed.
"Welp, guess you're getting a battle. You got this one Cress?....Cress?" He looked around, only to find the Bulbasaur behind him. 'No thank you, my vines aren't getting seared today.' Blaine didn't get a word of it, but her tone was understandable enough. "Alright Alright, you did your thing last time, so I'll pick..." his hand landed on one of those Pokeballs he had been looking at earlier. "Cinnamon! I think that was the name, come on!" In a flash of light a rambunctious young puppy appeared, tongue lolling out the side of her mouth. "You're on, dude. Cinnamon..." he consulted Dexette quickly. "Use Tackle!" The dog gave a soft 'ruff!' before charging at the Cyndaquil.
OOC: Sorry, must have overlooked that! I'm giving Butterball Keen Eye! Also, Cinnamon uses Tackle!
