Name: Sorin Derklin
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Trainer
Hometown: Oreburgh City, Sinnoh region
Appearance: Sorin is a rather large fellow in multiple ways. Firstly, he stands at 6’ 3” barefoot but when wearing his work boots, that height can even out to roughly 6’ 4”. Secondly, he has a solid amount of muscle on him for someone his age. He isn’t a gym rat or body builder but his years in the mines have given him natural muscle across his body, mainly in the arms and shoulders. Thirdly, his minimalist appearance gives off the impression of someone who is above fashion trends and doesn’t care much for how people see him. His day-to-day attire is his mining uniform, which consisted of his gray coveralls that had a yellow stripe across the legs, waist, chest, and arms for visibility, his thick black work boots, an undershirt that he always wore under the jumpsuit, and his hard hat which he typically keeps on his belt when not going underground.
His physical appearance wasn’t anything unique. No crazy hair styles or colors, no wild birthmarks or tattoos, not even a freckle or mole on his face. His fair was brown and buzz cut as he found that style the most comfortable while working underground. His face was sharp, with a pointed chin and angular features in the cheekbones and eyes. His eyes were a piercing green which caused his mother to joke that he was born with emeralds for eyes. His skin was rough to touch and tan in color and he had no facial hair or scars. He would alternate sometimes between wearing work gloves or not, depending on his mood at the time.
Personality: Sorin’s personality has rapidly changed from who he was growing up to who he is now. He was happy, a joker, and a good worker who loved keeping up moral. Now, he tends to keep to himself and moves with a near permanent scowl. He isn’t interested in making new friends or reaching out to people. He just wants to go about his day and move closer to his goals. He is very strict, both with himself and with his pokemon and keeps to an intense workout regiment to keep him and his team strong. Things like mandatory sparring and routines are Sorin’s way of maintaining control over his life and keeping his team safe. He finds himself blaming not just the pokemon above ground but the ones below as well, wondering if they could have saved his father if they had been strong enough. This makes Sorin cold and strict towards his pokemon partners.
His strengths in combat and structure leave him weakened in the social parts of his life. His lack of a desire to make friends or meet new people that aren’t useful to him makes him seem unapproachable and callous. He isn’t sure how to interact with people and may come off as uncaring or unempathetic towards others. Admittedly however, his cold exterior could mostly be attributed to him emotionally shutting down after not being able to process his father’s death in a healthy way. On the inside, he stands for protecting those who cannot protect themselves and will do the right thing when presented with the option.
History: Sorin was born to Cleo and Martin Derklin and raised in the tough environment of Oreburgh City. He spent his childhood like any other kid: getting an education, helping his mom at home, and visiting his dad in the mines when he could. He knew from a young age that he was going to join his dad down there one day, as this was kind of tradition amongst his family. On his 16th birthday this vision came true and Sorin joined his father in the Oreburgh mines, helping in the process of extracting coal and mining for precious gems. Life was peaceful for a time as Sorin quickly got strong from the work and developed a tough attitude towards life. But life is rarely without tragedy.
One shift, when Sorin and his father were on shift, the mine began to shake and there was an unexpected cave in, causing rocks to collapse on him, his father, and several other workers. There were multiple casualties from the accident, with Sorin’s father being counted amongst them. Sorin was hospitalized and his mother became inconsolable. The cause of the accident was later discovered to be a pair of trainers fighting above ground and one of their pokemon used the move “Earthquake,” which caused the tunnel to lose stability. Those trainers were aged 12 and 13, literal children playing with powerful creatures without a care in the world. A deep hatred and resentment towards careless trainers grew in Sorin. He wanted to make them pay, he wanted justice for his father, and couldn’t stand by any longer. Once he had recovered and made sure his mom was taken care of, he set out to get stronger. He couldn’t do it alone. He would need to get a pokemon of his own and start his journey. But he had an additional motive for leaving Sinnoh. In the region of Johto, there were rumors of a group resurfacing. Team Rocket, they called themselves. If he could join them and gain access to their resources, then maybe he could make a true difference and keep dangerous creatures out of children’s hands. But he would need to get much stronger if that vision to come to fruition. A vision that required a plane ticket and an iron will…
Goals: Sorin’s goal is to become a powerful pokemon trainer so that he can attempt to right the wrong’s of society; mainly the age of which people begin their pokemon journey. He has decided that 10 years old is far too young to be given the responsibility of a creature so dangerous. The way to achieve this goal unfortunately seems to be either joining up with the organization Team Rocket and having a team to back him up, or to take matters into his own hands and remove the pokemon from children who cannot handle them. The world will be a safer place when he’s done. He doesn’t care who gets in his way.
Other Info: Sorin always makes sure to send his mother money while she’s back in the Sinnoh region to help her with expenses. He always includes a card or note with these transactions to keep in contact with his mother over the great distances. Pokemon that Sorin desperately wants: Ground, Rock, and/or Fighting types.
