name: Shinju Fukutomi
age: 16
gender: Female
trainer type: Lady (Trainer)
hometown: Goldenrod City
—
appearance:
Most onlookers can’t pass by Shinju on the street without thinking, Oh, now that’s a Lady.
It makes sense, anyway. Standing at about 5’4” with long white hair and pale ivory skin, Shinju is a slender young woman who exudes the very essences of grace and poise. Her cheeks are always rosy. Her smile is gentle and refined. It isn’t until Shinju looks straight at you that you witness her most distinctive feature, which are her large dark eyes that seem to bore into your soul. They seem almost out of place compared to the rest of her delicate features, though with how unaware (or perhaps, extremely aware) Shinju seems to be about their off-putting effect, no one has ever had the guts to point it out to her.
Shinju always wears expensive frilly clothes and tasteful accessories, as befitting a Lady of her station. She enjoys wearing the colors black and white to emphasize her unique coloring, and in particular, one will never see her without her signature pearl earrings and silk hair ribbon, the latter of which she uses to tie her hair in a sleek half-up half-down hairstyle.
personality:
The best way to describe Shinju’s outward personality would have to be… cryptic. Having perfected the art of etiquette at a young age, Shinju always makes sure to wear a wholly pleasant and inoffensive mask when talking to strangers and other high society socialites. She is the perfect daughter, the perfect heiress, the perfect Lady who is always humble and level-headed in any situation that she comes across. Strangely, however, Shinju rarely betrays her personal thoughts and emotions, making her all the more intriguing. It is the goal of many young Ladies to get close to Shinju, not only because it would benefit their own social standing, but because they’re eager to find out who “dear Shinju” really is behind that mask. Yet, despite how perfectly timed her smiles and laughs are, those who are more perceptive may get the impression that Shinju may not be as sweet as she portrays herself to be.
The real Shinju is haughty, materialistic, and vain. Having been raised with the idea that her high status elevates her above the rest, Shinju rarely has high opinions of others, even those who inhabit the same social circles as her. Don’t get mistaken, though—while the Ladies and Rich Boys of her age group are like silver to her gold, anyone else is basically dirt. Shinju is also not as cool-tempered as she has led many to believe, and is in reality temperamental and prone to private fits and tantrums if things don’t go her way. Knowing this, the fact that she is able to easily maintain her image in public and can control her emotions with uncanny speed is almost admirable.
history:
Shinju was born in Goldenrod City to the Fukutomi family, a family that had acquired its vast wealth through the founding of her great-grandfather’s media company, Fortune Bold Inc. What was once a small stakeholder had since become a grand empire by the time of Shinju’s generation, and Shinju was incredibly privileged to be born at a point where she could reap the benefits without even lifting a fingertip.
Thanks to the shrewd business acumen of her great-grandfather, Hoshi Fukutomi, Shinju grew up in a whirl of expensive jewels, frilly dresses, and lavish tea parties. Everything that she wanted was given to her at the drop of a hat, resulting in the entitled attitude that still persists within her today. It didn’t help that her parents, Daisuke and Camille, who although did love her, often put Shinju in the care of nannies, maids, and butlers who couldn’t deny their lady’s requests without the fear of getting booted out of the mansion that the Fukutomis called home.
In order to limit the embarrassment that she could potentially cause her family with her immature behavior, Shinju went through intense lessons on proper etiquette and deportment that ultimately shaped her into the graceful refined Lady that many perceive her as today. However, those lessons often took up the majority of Shinju’s free time throughout her childhood, leaving her little time to make friends—both human and Pokémon. While her parents tried to comfort her when she brought it up to them, they never fulfilled their promises in this regard. We’ll get you your very own Pokémon soon, darling. Oh, you’ll make your own friends at the next event, sweetheart. After years of her parents going back on their word and failing to make friends with other high society kids, Shinju began to subtly reject any opportunities for socialization past the necessary introductions and stopped asking to get her own Pokémon, leaving her to be somewhat lonely in this regard.
As time went on, it seemed that Shinju would end up being the one of the only few girls in the extended Fukutomi family. By the time she was ten, she found herself surrounded by brothers and male cousins who were expected to take on important positions in Fortune Bold Inc. while she and her female relatives were expected to host social functions and charity balls in order to further the Fukutomi name. Although those were important jobs, many of the men in the family rarely acknowledged the hard work their wives and daughters did, and Shinju couldn’t help but think that many of her aunts and female cousins would be better suited in some of the positions that their husbands and sons were in. Certainly she would be better than her own sniveling younger brothers—she only needed some way to prove it.
And what a chance did Hoshi Fukutomi’s sudden death provide.
Now, despite all the talk about him being a calculating business man, Hoshi was, in private, an affectionate but eccentric patriarch to all the younger Fukutomis. Having had more humble beginnings compared to his progeny, Hoshi wished that his sons and their children and grandchildren could experience the same joys he had when traveling the region with only his Pokémon and the clothes on his back. That was why in his will, he wrote various stipulations for some family members regarding the terms of their inheritance. For Shinju, while she did receive a portion of her inheritance, the rest could only be received if she went to New Bark Town, his hometown, and worked her way through Johto training Pokémon and challenging Gyms. One badge is sufficient, the will stated. But where's the fun in that, Shinju?
Shinju sat at the reading in shock. She could even hear Grandpa Hoshi do that ridiculous wink of his. Her family and company were already in a commotion trying to transfer ownership and assets, and he wanted her to go on a Pokémon journey? Sure, it wasn’t like she had to defeat the Elite Four, but she’d have to get her hands all dirty, and her dresses would get ruined, and she wouldn’t be able to go to all the parties this season, and…
Oh, but she wanted that inheritance so badly. And if there was no other way to get it, then might as well play Grandpa Hoshi’s little game.

goals: To prove her worth. To gain her inheritance. To see if Pokémon are really as fun as they say.
