When Adrian recalled the small bulbous plant and released a new dog to join the fray, Spinarak’s eyes widened. The small green spider scurried over to the nearest tree and pressed against its wood in the thick green grass. It needed to camouflage and fast! With its heart racing a thousand miles per hour, it waited and listened to the Houndour as it growled and barked at the newest arrival. A stolen peek showed the small green arachnid that its newest target remained on the trainer and his Pokemon, not on the little spider. I’ve gotta escape! And fast! But Buddy’s pleads tugged at the back of its mind. Why would it help Buddy? They were at odds originally, with the small plant trying its best to take the spider out. But would it really allow harm to come to the newly released Sarge and his trainer? After promising to work with Buddy? Houndour smirked, lowering its head and narrowing its eyes on the newest arrival as thick clouds of smog released from its mouth, poisoning Sarge just as easily. “Stand outta the way, little dog. Run on back to your pack, got it?” Houndour growled menacingly at the small grey Poochyena. “Or I’ll have to get ugly!” Spinarak ran up the bark of the tree and used its strings to lower it down in between the two Pokemon as fear seized its heart. It spun around and shined the facial markings on its butt at Sarge accidentally, trying it’s best to scare the Houndour. “They’re not alone so scram!” Spinarak squeaked through fearful lungs that quivered as they spoke. Oh no! Oh gosh! What had it done?! “I’ll eat you too, bug, so you’d better run!” Houndour laughed, releasing more of its deadly smog everywhere as Spinarak scurried back up its long silky thread. The thread snapped at Sarge charged at the small bug, knocking it out of the tree. It spun around and shot a face full of string in Sergeant’s face in a hurry and scurried off as fast as it could, rubbing the spots that Sergeant hit. “Run! There’s no saving you if you don’t!” Spinarak squeaked, though Adrian’s ball would easily snap the unruly firedog up with the click of a button. A few wiggles on the ground and a resounding ding announced a successful capture. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Spinarak LV 12 HP 0% [0/35]

Sarge somehow, by some miracle, pulled through.
Despite some nasty clouds of smog that clearly left him choking and sick. Despite the spider continuing to be a nuisance. Despite his trembling little legs, he surged forth and chased off the spider, leaving him squared off, alone, against the houndour. He was hanging on by a thread when the pokeball smacked into his opponent. And when it fell still and silent, he collapsed. Adrian swore and quickly returned him to his pokeball.
"Thank you, pal...you...deserve a good long rest after that fight. And so do you, Bud. I'm...I'm so sorry." He still felt like a massive idiot. Deciding to do what he should have done way earlier, he sent out Barry. "I need you to fly as high as you can and help me find a way out of here. Please."
As he knelt there, curled around Buddy, soothing her, the grumpy bird, seeming to sense the severity of the situation, flew high up above the treeline. Adrian gathered Buddy into his arms and followed his guidance, only to realize that Sarge had originally been on the right track! They...were so close to the path...
With a sigh of relief, he returned to the road and sought out shelter for the night...
Of course, later, when everyone was healed up and a little less traumatized from it all, he found himself back at the outskirts of the estate. He now knew from talking to people at a nearby pokemon center that this was some kind of educational institute. He just had to make it there and he could learn more! And he did want to learn more about pokemon, especially given his current...predicament of juggling three eggs, as the universe had decided to jumpstart his efforts as a breeder like a tidal wave. He wasn't drowning, per se, but it did make him nervous to carry around so many eggs.
But he really wanted to learn more. To be a better pokemon train and future breeder. This place could hold answers! He just...had to figure out how to get there. Once more, Adrian stepped back onto a path, hoping this one would lead him to the doors of the institute, once more oblivious to the fact that he was a little off track for his goals.
(At least he had a little more sense of what was going on this time? And knew he could rely on his grumpy pidgey to help get him out of the forest if he became desperate.)

Penumbra Hills was riddled with wild Pokemon. Most were hostile not in the fact that they were out to get the humans and their owned Pokemon, but in the fact that they were not as accustomed to humans roaming around their territory. There were several trainers now, trouncing around through the deep woods of the hilly side in search of whatever mysteries they may hold. One burned through the forest far away from Adrian, though the loud howls of wild dogs being singed alive might have carried over the hilltops like eerie melodies to announce the things to come. Something slithered along the ground, slipping between the tall blades of bright green grass as it pressed its scaly hide against the soft sands of the ground underneath. Rough rocks scraped against the wild Pokemon’s belly and stray twigs scratched at its sides. Scarring would be temporary for the worst of these offenses, though the scars that littered its sides and faces from previous foes it battled and defeated in its hungry stance would remain a tale of its woeful life. The wild rattlesnake paused, though, when it came across Adrian, hidden slightly off the beaten path though with its head propped up underneath its coils. Who was this in its domain? A forked tongue slipped between its lips and tasted the air around it. Mammalian in nature, like that of the wild rodents it easily wrapped around and swallowed whole. The Pidgey that flapped its wings and soared overhead would catch the wild snake’s attention more. Birds meant eggs. Eggs were delicacies that it hadn’t had in a while, considering the difficulty it faced at trying to sneak away with a wild Murkrow’s eggs. They were difficult to find along the hillside, and harder to steal from. “Be gonnee!” The snake lifted its head up above the bright green grass and rattled the end of its tail in warning as it hissed at Adrian. Scare the too-large-to-swallow human off, then pilfer whatever eggs Pidgey might be hiding. That was the strange snake’s ultimate goals. A Wild Ekans appeared! Level 14. Wandering down what looked to be a path and trying to stick to it, Adrian continued his steadfast approach towards that building in the distance. He'd find it this time, surely. He wouldn't need to retreat in desperation and hurry fearfully to a pokemon center...right? Adrian adjusted his bag, careful with it, well aware that if he tripped and fell, it could be game over for his precious cargo. He wasn't about to fumble this opportunity after he stopped those bumbling grunts from making off with those eggs. However, his thoughts were rather occupied. Distracted. His focus kept straying the further they walked with a desire to check on the eggs and make sure they were okay. But then, he heard a slither and a hiss. Very close. He shifted with a frown.
"What was that?" he asked nobody in particular. Buddy cocked her head from where she traipsed along at his side. She listened hard and then she saw it! The ekans! The bulbasuar scurried between her trainer and it, braced for a fight and braver this time. She wasn't afraid of a snake!
"We're just walking through! But we'll fight if we have to!"
Adrian already had his pokedex out and as checking the ekans.
[Ekans the Snake Pokemon: The eggs of bird Pokémon are its favorite food. It swallows eggs whole, so sometimes an egg gets stuck, and Ekans faints.]
"It...eats eggs." Okay, he really didn't want this one at his back. Now once more freshly paranoid for his cargo, he stepped back. "Buddy, use leech seed!" This time, as he sought out a pokeball in his pocket, he made sure it was indeed a pokeball and not an adrenaline orb. Last thing he needed was a repeat of last time and have yet another houndour running up to him and scorching buddy. He still felt terrible and sick think about that day. The panic. The shame. The guilt. He could have done so many things different. Better. But he kept making so many questionable choices. His sleep had been troubled that night, only relieved when Buddy was returned to him by the nurse the next morning, right as a goomy in the rain. She didn't seem upset with him at all, and was back to being cheerful and cuddly.
He owed it to her to be smarter. Better. More careful.
He looked over the round object in his hand and affirmed it was a ball as buddy sprayed a scattering of leeching seeds everywhere. Okay. Here goes nothing! He threw the pokeball.

The wild snake stared carefully at the strange bulbous plant. As it slipped its tongue and tasted the air, Ekans recoiled in disgust. It was no egg. It was no bird or rodent! Whatever this amalgamation of living plant matter was, it wasn’t something the wild serpent seemed interested in. It leered at its opponent and uncoiled its long, slender body so that it could more easily slither across the ground to whatever tree the tasty looking Pidgey might try to land in. When Buddy shot several seeds out of the bulb on her back to land on Ekans and bury them in between her rough scales, the snake hissed loudly. What was that?! “You annoy me!” Ekans cried out loudly, slamming her tail around angrily. It cut through the tall blades of the bright green grasses and sent sand splattering everywhere in odd directions, though most of it was just unearthing the small pebbles and broken twigs buried between the grasses. Who did this strange little plant think she was?! “I’m not interested in eating you. Why fight when you can flee and save yourself? It’s the law of the wild, after all.” Ekans tried to reason with Buddy, turning to study her opponent carefully to see if what it said even mattered. When Adrian tossed his ball, scooping the small snake up inside, its anger would intensify. It rocked around angrily inside of the ball, slamming into the digital walls that surrounded it. Let me out! I demand vengeance! Its head crashed against the 0s and 1s that wrapped around the inner walls of the ball. The Poke Ball rocked on the ground and eventually began to crack. When the Ekans broke through its confinement, it sized up Buddy with fire burning inside of its eyes and rushed after her. “I’ll show you to try and trap me!” Ekans hissed loudly, leaping at her and sinking its fangs into the small plant’s hide. Ouch!
Buddy had been hopeful, just like Adrian, when the ball scooped the snake. Thus far, this had always worked. Always. They weren't concerned about the ball failing. But the placid snake apparently took offense to her trainer's efforts and upon bursting free of the ball, immediately lunged forth and sank its teeth into her side. And here Buddy had been almost tricked into thinking the snake would be relatively harmless. Now she was paying the price with an aching flank.
"It's not trapping! Just...friend making." Buddy argued. No need to be so mad or mean. My trainer is really, really nice. He'd feed you and stuff so no more having to take care of yourself in the wild. Spoken like a pokemon who'd never been 'wild' a day in her life.
"Buddy! Think you can tackle it?" he asked, unsure of how the bulbasaur felt after that hard hit. She gave him a certain nod, before trying to lunge at the snake again despite how much that last bite hurt.
Adrian watched the exchange and would once more seek out a ball in his pack. He needed to be conservative with these, but one more wouldn't hurt. If he was going to complete the dex or study more pokemon in general, then he needed to catch and train as many as possible. (Including—shudder—one of those spiders one day, should be stumble upon one again).
The snake was a little better, if only if it didn't make his hackles stand on end thinking about having it at his back, slithering into his pack in search of dinner. Eventually, he would take in a long, deep breath, expand the ball, and throw it hard. C'mon, ekans, stay in the ball this time. Before he had to rethink his plan or worse, Buddy fainted because of a solid hit he hadn't planned around.
hH watched the ball sail through the gloom with anticipation, hoping that not only did it work, but that Buddy wouldn't be knocked out if it didn't. That last bite had been nasty after the ekans seemed to lower her guard. A guard she hadn't picked back up. Pokemon battles were so complex and he was still learning to keep up with all the nuances.
"Just stay in it this time!" he called out.
Who knew what else lurked in the night? Because anything like that houndour might have them running out of the hills!

Ekans narrowed its eyes skeptically as Buddy spoke. Humans feeding Pokemon? Why would they do that? The wild was a lawless place. “I hunt. I find food just fine.” The purple serpent hissed with a shake of its head. Would Adrian feed it a diet of Pidgey eggs as often as she liked? Or dig nice warm dens that it could burrow inside of? It didn’t make sense to the slender serpent to work alongside these strange mammals who couldn’t even fight or hunt for themselves. “They weak. I’m not.” Ekans stated, using her tail to point towards Adrian as if highlighting what it was saying. Buddy rushed forwards through the bright green grasses and slammed into the snake once more, knocking Ekans backwards. It jumped up hissing loudly in pain. It rubbed the spot where Buddy hit with its tail and turned to leer at its opponent through slitted eyes that narrowed down harshly on Buddy. “You insist on fighting? All I want are eggs! Nice, tasty, juicy eggs! How many eggs does your trainer have?!” Ekans asked incredulously. Though, as it tasted the air with its tongue again, a new scent it hadn’t even paid attention to caught its tongue. Was that…a unique egg scent…it had never encountered before?! A mischievous though popped in its head. It stood up tall and proud making sure that Adrian’s target would be easy to spot. Throw the ball, human. Throw it! Capture the snake of your dreams! This human carried eggs out in the open, nearly defenseless, and ready to capture a creature who dined on them with pleasure! Yes! “I think…” Ekans smirked as the ball smacked it dead in the center of its scaley hide. “I’ve reconsidered your offer. Call me friend!” It snickered, disappearing into the ball in the blink of an eye. Ekans' Moves: Leer, Poison Sting, Bite, Glare Ekans Move: 1ZRO3G4u1-4 Buddy's Move: (crit) 1-16 (strength) 1-16

This time, the pokeball went still. Thank goodness. Now he could worry a little less about something sneaking up behind him and trying to literally eat the eggs in his bag. He shifted the straps and looked around at the trees, nodding to himself. Time to push onward.
"You doing okay?" he'd ask Buddy, who would cuddle against his leg affectionately. "That's good to see. C'mon, I think there's a stump up ahead. You can rest for a little bit before we keep going." It wasn't too long of a walk. Once he was sat down, he'd check Buddy over for hurts and aches and dab any injuries from the ekans with potion. It wasn't long before she was back to bouncing around, clearly in no pain. "Let's get back to it then."
He stood up and looked around again. Okay, right there. There's the path. Good. Though he was a little concerned with how overgrown everything looked...This felt like last time, where he steadily lost track of the path and got entangled in bushes and trees that were hard to squeeze through. No matter. He'd keep pushing on. There was only one way and that was forward...right?
Buddy picked up sticks and rocks cheerfully as they traveled. She even poked at trees with an especially sturdy stick she found.
"Careful, you might upset a spider like that," he mumbled as he watched her thwack the trunks and lower branches of trees with her new toy. Even the roots weren't free of her playful wrath. He smile faintly at her antics. It did brighten his heart to see her like this...
And she was such a trooper. Even with the scary encounters from last time and the battle with the egg eater this time, she was perpetually in high spirits. She was just so...genuine. So happy. She brought so much joy into his life without effort. It made him smile to himself. There was no one here to put of a facade towards. No one to judge him. It was just him and his pokemon, here to face the challenges of the world. And that made him happy too.
Heartened, he squinted through the trees towards the glow of windows in the distance. He was still on track. He wasn't too sure how long he'd have to walk, but he'd get to the doors of that educational institute eventually...right?

Zzz….zzzz…..ZZZZ…..ZZZZZZ….ZzzzzZZzzz Something slept in a nicely dug out hole underneath the pale moon’s light that shine down the pathways that etched in and out of thick pockets of trees. Some were very dense indeed, meant only for smaller, nimbler, and more capable Pokemon to slip between. Along the path lost items like shoes would pop up, some in odd positions that suggested these items were lost by humans too stubborn to realize that they couldn’t squeeze between two impossibly interwoven trees, though they would stubbornly push their way through. When the strange creature first heard the noise it pressed closer to its mate, curling its long tail around a single egg buried underneath the earth in their dug out den. Its mate twitched, opening one eye wide in alarm, and nudged her mate anxiously. “Heyy!” It squeaked. The other rolled over and shook its head firmly. “Zzzz…Yeah I did, Rattata my love..ZZZ….I promise.” The other Rattata puffed up and bit their mate on the shoulders, causing the sleeping mouse to squeak out in pain. “No you didn’t!” The mate protested in alarm. “You hear that?! More travelers!” It squeaked. “So what?” The sleepy mouse asked. “So what?! So you go up there and scare them off is so what!” Its mate demanded, huffing angrily. And so, that would be how Adrian would find the mouse before him. Tired. Sleepy. Dragging its limp tail behind its body as it tried to rouse it sleeping limbs into awake mode. Rattata would shake itself as soon as its eyes landed firmly on the strange man and his strange Pokemon. “Listen…ya’ll like loud…and the uhm…” Rattata coughed, glancing back at the den to see a pair of eyes staring it DEAD in the eyes with a knowing glance. “Well…I just can’t have that, understand? Some of us hard working mice are trying to sleep around here. So could ya like…not? Thanks.” It squeaked firmly, hoping that would get their partner off their back. A Wild Rattata Appeared! Level 9. Adrian saw the signs of people running into tight spots like he did previously, and he realized he might just have to turn back and try walking a different way to the institute. This path felt like it was terminating soon, much to his disappointment and frustration. Adjusting the bag on his shoulder, he looked to make his way back towards the road to search for a new route, when out from somewhere nearby popped a very drowsy looking rattata. Huh. For once something very unaggressive. He didn't have one of these in his pokedex yet, so he pointed the device at the little pokemon that wandered over to squeak at them,
[Rattata the Mouse Pokemon: Will chew on anything with its fangs. If you see one, you can be certain that 40 more live in the area.]
Yeah, that tracked. He was familiar with these pests back home. They chewed through anything and everything and rummaged through trash and nested in walls. They were pests that were seemingly impossible to get rid of. However, with how drowsy this one was, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to help build the self-esteem of one of his teammates he'd been unable to use since catching it as the situation never seemed appropriate.
A little, tired mouse was perfect for Braum to see it was capable!
"Alright Bud, out of the way for now. We're going to let Braum handle this one." With a gentle toss, he sent out a rather confused bronzor, who made a curious noise at its surroundings. There, it floated, peering between the rattata and Adrian, wondering what was going on. The last 'battle' it had been in was when Adrian fumbled throwing out Barry against that jerk Silver. He quickly switched out before anyone got hurt.
But here and now? No risk of fire or smokescreen. An easy toss across the plate.
"Alright, use confusion and then I'll catch it with this ball," he told bronzor. "Go on. You can do it. I believe in ya, pal." Adrian even smiled assuringly and watched as the bronzor floated over to the rat, made an apologetic noise, because clearly the rattata was rudely woken up by their antics, before doing as it was asked. It tried to use its psychic powers to disorient its foe before Adrian tossed a pokeball.
(He was oblivious to the baby rattata's he was stealing a father from...Not that...the mice really needed to be protected from poaching efforts to encourage reproduction.)

Rattata rubbed its eyes as it studied the strange human. Adrian didn’t look all that intimidating just standing there fumbling around with whatever it was that humans carried with them. The problem? Adrian wasn’t turning around and heading back in the direction he came from. And Adrian was large! Especially compared to the purple rodent, Rattata wasn’t so sure assuming that this strange bipedal creature was harmless was a smart move. “I told them. Now can I go back to sleep?” Rattata squeaked to the den behind him. Although its mate wouldn’t respond with words, a glance behind told Rattata all it needed to know. Fire burned in the eyes that met Rattata’s gaze from inside the den. Fire and an insatiable desire to never let Rattata live this down should it turn around and retreat now. Nope, gotta see this through. Gulp! When Adrian called out a strange floating disc, Rattata thumped its heavy tail lazily on the ground and shrugged. “Ok so we’re really doing this, huh?” It huffed underneath its voice as though it could think of a million things more fun than this. It rushed at Braum and jumped up high, slamming its full weight into the small disc. “There! Now maybe you’ll reconsider? I’m super tired, man! Been up all night collecting berries for my family, ya know…” Rattata tried to plead with Braum. Braum’s psychic powers would lift the rodent up into the air and slam it back on the ground. Rattata squeaked loudly in pain and slowly picked itself up. Ok, that definitely hurt! So underestimating these creatures was an absolute NO, got it. Anything else you’d like to tell me before I continue? Rattata shook its head but as it blinked a small red-and-white ball soared through the air and gobbled it up in the blink of the eye. Hey?! "You did it!" Adrian praised Braum, who turned to face him, bobbing with a little confusion once the rattata was caught. It didn't do much, and the battle was rather uneventful, but at least its trainer was happy? Making a soft sound, it floated back over to Adrian with lonely, hopeful eyes, and in response, Adrian patted its...back? Side? Well Braum got pats. "Wanna stay out of your ball for a bit as we try to figure out a better path?" The bronzor's look was long and considering, but eventually, it bobbed a bit, inviting Adrian to go on ahead without returning it quite yet. Thus, with a newly captured rat and snake, Adrian backtracked yet again, having decided that the thickening treeline meant he just wasn't going the right way. Did he have to backtrack allll the way to the main street? Maybe. Maybe not. But he knew where that pokemon center was like the back of his hand, and he could gather himself there. Have his team looked at real quick, swap some stuff around, and gather more information to add to his map.
With a quick check of his bag to ensure the eggs were safe, he started when a tiny little ghost candle popped up its head. Read. Flicker. She often spent time in his backpack rather in a ball ever since he found her on that rainy day in cherrygrove.
"Keeping the eggs warm in here?" Adrian asked, checking on the trio in his pack. The spheal egg was rather...active lately. It seemed very close to hatching. He could feel little wriggles under his palm now and then. The other two...not so much. But he knew he'd have to be patient. That hatching eggs took time, especially when you were just carrying them around in a backpack. But Flicker's presence did seem to help. They were warmer now to the touch, as if the little ghost was incubating them with her presence alone. He could appreciate that. "Alright, I'm going to try finding the right path to that Mizuma place, so you keep doing your thing."
Flicker, well, flickered, before disappearing again.
Adrian adjusted the contents of his backpack to ensure all were snug, before taking the hints he was given and wandering down the road. People kept assuring him that there was an easy path straight up to the institute, but Adrian was starting to wonder if he was approaching from the wrong side of the property. Or maybe the locals were just messing with him. But he was determined to see if he could find his way through this steadily less...mystifying forest. Honestly, beyond the paths that just ended because of trees sprouting out of the middle, there wasn't too much to be afraid of...
If you didn't count the spiders. Or the fire-breathing dogs. Or the spiders. Or the rats that lived in the hollows. Or the spiders. Or the poochyenas that ran in packs and would probably try to hunt you down and eat you...But especially the spiders that built elaborate webs that you could walk face first into before they proceeded to make a menace of themselves by spitting even more sticky, icky goop at your face...Yeah, the spiders were very much the most unpleasant part even if there were technically more dangerous and threatening pokemon. But he had a little more faith in himself and his team now. They could do this!
So back into the forest they went, searching for that fabled route up to the institute and hoping they didn't run into any dead ends that would have them backtracking again. He'd probably just call it quits for a little while if he did.

The last remaining mouse ran through the thick undergrowth with its egg tucked carefully between its sharp buckteeth. Adrenaline pumped through its veins as it fled. Though Rattata could easily crush through delicate things like an egg, Rattata was being extremely careful not to smash its only remaining family link while it fled through the forest with limbs smacking it in the face and small pebbles catching it underneath its feet. Why did it push its mate to try and scare off that strange creature so much? Why did that evil creature steal its mate away in the blink of an eye? How would it go on now knowing that it would have to raise their egg all on its own? Then a thought struck it. Carefully, Rattata hid its egg underneath a large, overturned tree. It used its tree to gnaw through several branches and pull them loose so that it could tuck them around its egg and make sure no other creature – like the ugly snakes that loved to dine on eggs and lived in its environments might try to do. Would it flee every time something came along to destroy their happy home? Would it always be a coward in the face of danger? And what did that ever get Rattata?! Anger burned inside of its red eyes as it turned around and raced back through the undergrowth. Back to the only home it had ever known. Back to the evil that lurked in their forest. But the evil…was gone?! No! How?! Why?! Rattata screamed so loud that small black birds lifted their wings and fled to the skies high above the wooded area and disappeared with loud caws. No! It wouldn’t let this be the end. Not here. Not now! They would give it back its mate! Rattata sniffed the ground and followed Adrian’s scent through the thick bushes and entangled trees, towards the beaten path that led slowly towards the beautifully manicured lawns of the estates. It hunted them down with vengeance. And when Rattata finally located its sworn enemy – stealer of mates, crusher of dreams, wrecker of homes – it screamed angrily and rushed towards Adrian’s feet to try and bite at his shoes. “GIVE ME BACK MY MATE!” It screamed loudly in a voice mixed with pain and anguish. What the?!
Adrian expected many things to leap out at him in this dark place full of strange and spooky things. A rat who wished to murder his shoes was not one. Unfortunately for said rat, he was fond of these shoes and wasn't about the let the rodent gnaw angry holes into the top! On reflex, he jerked his knee and flicked the rat off, barely keeping from stepping on the critter that sought unholy, ratty vengeance upon him.
"Does it have a disease or something? That thing's mental," Adrian muttered. "Or maybe this place just makes everything more aggressive."
Well, it was just a rat, and despite its efforts, it didn't seem too strong. Maybe this was another one he could just softball for Braum. Expanding a ball, he once more tossed out the bronzor in a flash of light.
"Hey, pal, uh, can you help me out?" Adrian asked, eying the rat and carefully dodging any efforts the rattata made to take another bite out of his shoes or leg. Last thing he needed was for it to bolt up the leg of his pants. THAT would probably lead to a hospital visit for bloody gashes all up and down his calf. And possible a shot for whatever random plague rats carried. Sure, this one didn't live in the sewers but he didn't trust the bite of some random rat who was absurdly aggressive.
Oblivious to the ratatta's terrible heartache, and unable to speak pokemon, he could not fathom why he was being assaulted as being his own doing. He did not know he broke up a beautiful rattata family who were nesting and raising little rattata eggs together. Who probably had dozens of babies running around this forest that they dutifully raised to be their best rat selves. The rattata's utter anguish at the loss of its mate was only heard and understood by Buddy and Braum, both of whom looked a little baffled and uncomfortable.
Unfortunately for the rattata, its mate wasn't even with Adrian right now. He was in a box for now, housed inside a cozy little pokeball. Was he anxious too? Did he yearn to be free? Or was he oblivious to it all and enjoying a nap? Such was the mystery of pokeballs that Adrian didn't think too hard on. Pokemon often liked being in them, while others refused to be contained.
Buddy like to be out of her ball as often as possible to walk with her trainer.
But liking pokeballs or not was not the matter at hand. No, before him was an angry rattata demanding back its mate in a fit of hysterics worthy of a telenovela. And all Adrian could think about was how to not get bit.
"Use confusion," he told Braum. After a little pause, the metallic disc would do just that, offering a soft apology to the sad rattata.
"...M-maybe you should go back to your home. I d-don't think...your mate is here..." it said, before using its psychic powers to try to pick up his foe and throw it towards the trees. "Go. I d-don't want to fight you."

The nervous look between Adrian’s Pokemon was lost on the little rat. It was tired. Sore. Rattata never realized how much effort it took to run through the entire hillside hunting down its opponents to make them pay. When Braum appeared and tried to get Rattata to leave, the small mouse just shook its head firmly and stomped its foot in the ground. It saw them still its mate away with its own eyes. It witnessed the kidnapping that would scar Rattata for life. “Not until you give me back my mate!” Rattata hissed as its hair stood on ends and it arched its back defensively. “I witnessed true evil back at my den! And that evil whisked my mate away using some strange round…berry!” Rattata insisted, not really sure if the Poke Ball was a berry or not. It rushed towards Braum and jumped up into the air. Rattata would spin around as it jumped so that it could thwack its tail against Braum’s strange disc-like body. That might show it a lesson! Some of the smaller and weaker Pokemon in the hillside would always go scurrying if you were just aggressive enough to spook them, which was Rattata’s goal. Rattata never really handled the real beef in the forest. It always relied on its mate to do that. When Braum picked Rattata up and tossed it away with his psychic powers, Rattata screamed in pain. “Are you just as evil as that beast behind you?!” Rattata roared, slowly picking itself up off the grassy ground and dusting itself off. “So….you all just want to steal away mates forever?” Rattata lamented its woes full force. It rushed through tears that streamed from both its eyes, jumped up, and thwacked Braum with its tail again. “My mate is my family’s protector. Rattata was our provider. What will we do now?! We have mouths to feed! They depend on us! I can’t leave those hungry mouths alone to do all the work myself!” Rattata insisted, as Braum picked it up once more with his psychic powers and tossed Rattata further away. “Have you no heart?! No, clearly you DON’T!” Rattata hissed, picking its broken and battered body up once more. No matter what, Rattata knew that it just couldn’t give up.
