The furry rodents hadn’t left. They’d promised Adrian a war, and they were going to bring him one. Though a few rushed off to whatever house with a red roof he must have been talking about, several followed him in the tall grasses and awaited the perfect opportunity to strike. Soon, he would know the wrath and pain of a Rattata scorned. Soon, he would regret the day he’d ever set foot upon these hills. Soon, the Rattata would have the last laugh! For now, it quietly did as it was told by the other Rattata and stalked after him in the shadows. “It’s nice to meet you Adrian.” Mishu greeted and turned to glance around the densely forested area of woods that he’d gotten lost in. The path wasn’t out of the way to her, but most would find it incredibly difficult to navigate back to. He also seemed to be heading in the opposite directions, given the way he was prepared to run after his encounter with Spinarak. “It’s back this way. But you won’t reach the well traveled path until you’re out of the woods completely.” She remarked. There were several worn pathways throughout the entire wooded hillside, but mostly from other trainers who had eventually gotten themselves lost. Which would explain why nearly all of them eventually led to a dead end. Mishu gestured for Adrian to follow and started leading him through the thickets towards her estates. Several large saplings and thick brushes would slow them down, causing Mishu to call out her Pancham who hacked her way through the thick brush and make it easier for them to navigate. “Do you have any Pokemon that knows Cut? Many have gotten stranded at dead ends with small trees blocking their paths. Cut will help you out there, should that ever happen.” She continued, matter-of-factly. Three Rattata lunged out from the thick brush Kumaneko hacked in two and chased after the small Panda, who raced ahead to the estates without them. Though Kumaneko had disappeared, leaving both without a Pokemon who knew Cut for the moment, the sounds of its fearless fights (and fleeing Rattata) could be heard in the distance. “Oh…watch out! They’re known to bite anything when they attack. And love to steal food from trainers.” Mishu warned Adrian as she jumped out of the way when another Rattata lunged past her and after Adrian. He would feel the cold touch of its sharp teeth soon enough! A Wild Rattata is attacking! Level 17. What will Adrian do? Cuttable Tree? "No...I don't..." Adrian admitted when Mishu asked about a pokemon who could cut. Buddy could kind of hack small branches out of the way with razor leaf. And Flicker would probably just set the whole thing on fire for a few hours...Not exactly efficient or safe. Mishu also probably wouldn't like the suggestion of casual arson to thin out her woods when they were apparently a carefully cultivated ecosystem of predator and prey. "Do you know what all live here?"
Had he encountered everything this place had to hide?
"...I have...seen many rattata that are...far more aggressive than I am used to encountering," he offered in a sort of awkward attempt at conversation. "Couple ekans. Spinarak. A poochyena and a houndour." He swore something fluttered in the tree tops, but no random hoothoots or anything started to dive bomb him. Last thing he really wanted was an ornery spearow taking offense to him existing and then having a whole flock of the things trying to merc him.
He shoved his hands into his pockets and walked a little behind Mishu as she lead the way towards the estate, her pokemon clearing the path to be a little wider. Well, up until more rats jumped out and he chased them off into the gloom. Uh. Well. That didn't seem like it was supposed to happen. Maybe he wasn't her only cut pokemon?
Not that he could ponder long! Suddenly, another rattata rushed forth, darting past Mishu to try to maul Adrian's ankles.
"Not again!" he yelped, alarmed at the sheer hostility of them all. He scrambled back, trying not to kick or step on the tiny mouse that wanted his flesh and blood. Then he grabbed a pokeball and sent out a pidgey. A very traditional early trainer pokemon compared to the litwick and bronzor he had on his person.
And he most certainly gave off the impression of an inexperienced trainer. He didn't have the cool composure of someone with a fistful of badges and years of traveling under his belt.
"Barry! Use uproar!" he commanded, playing dance around the rabid rat. The bird happily complied with the opportunity to throw a fit. He rushed over to harass the rattata, screeching and pecking and flapping its wings, to raise all sorts of a riot. Amazing how much damage a little birdie could do by screaming. "Get offa me, rat! Why do you all try to destroy my shoes!" It's like he was cursed by the rat god or something to be harassed by the tiny purple mice.

Mishu nodded her head thoughtfully when Adrian admitted that he didn’t have any Pokemon that knew cut. She’d recently taught her Pokemon that move while she was traveling through the densely wooded areas of Ilex, so it wasn’t too surprising that many trainers might not have gotten quite so far. How was Silvester fairing after she’d managed to wrangle the illusive ducks back for him? She had to hope that he was able to keep a better hold on them now than he was beforehand. “There’s a young boy around Azalea that can give you the Hidden Machine to teach your Pokemon that move. It’s very powerful for clearing out smaller trees that would still be too much work for the average person to chop down.”[/font] She smiled thoughtfully. Adrian’s comments on Rattata were…surprising. Her reportings found a veritable wealth of information on the rodents. “I’m originally from Galar, so I can’t really say. However, many dex entries admit that they love to steal from unsuspecting trainers and that they’ll bite anything when provoked. They’re also described as jittery Pokemon that can’t sit still.” Still, it didn’t really seem as cautious as the Pokedex made it out to be in the moment, so maybe Adrian had a point? “They also say where you spot one Rattata you can be sure there are at least 40 more nearby. They multiply very quickly and can survive in virtually any climate.” Truly a remarkable specimen in their own right, though they were not one of the beloved Dark Types that Mishu advocated the most for. Barry slapped the rodent around, causing it recoil, and charge blindly at its opponent. Though it tried to jump at the feathered avian and knock it back to the ground, Barry effortlessly soared up into the air and avoided the rodent’s attack. Cursing to itself, Rattata focused inwardly as a bright light enveloped it and caused it to glow. It would have the last laugh soon. However, as Barry landed and began beating Rattata senselessly with his beak and sharp talons, the small rodent immediately turned tail and fled through the dense overgrowth of the surrounding forest. Clearly, Barry’s attacks were way more than one rodent could handle, so it needed backup and stat! "Well I sure would like to know what I have done to provoke every rattata in this forest! They will try to go around my pokemon just to bite my shoes. None of the other pokemon here do that," he complained while Barry, fortunately, took care of the rattata with his supreme tantrum throwing abilities. He wasn't sure if he would have ever though a pidgey would be this useful until now. That one move had carved paths through basically every opponent thus far like an absolute miracle.
When the rat was subdued, he sighed in a sort of relief.
"Azaela? That is past Violet I think...might take a while to get there..." Despite the relatively straight path, Adrian had a knack for getting lost or distracted along the way. See: Him wandering around the hills of the Mizuma Institute rather than getting his badges because reasons. At least with her guidance they probably would get there without too many issues. Right? Sure, neither of them had cut right now and she explained that most of the trails were dead ends carved by lost travelers, but surely they would get to their destination.
Right?
"Good job, Barry. Reliable as always. Return." And in a flash of light, the little sparrow would be gone. "How much further is it? To the Institute, I mean." He adjusted his backpack and started moving in the direction they had been walking, pushing aside branches and ducking beneath them when they were too sturdy to move. He was starting to question this trail even if it was the direction Mishu pointed them in previously.
Sure, she should know the way to her own house, but this dark forest just felt like a place that would be terribly easy to get lost in if you weren't careful. The shadows and rocks and trees just...promised to play awful tricks on the senses.

Mishu raised a curious eyebrow to Adrian’s statement before continuing down the pathway that led back to the estates. Though he seemed keen on wanting a short and direct path back, it might have proven difficult given their lack of Pokemon who could easily chop down the tall and dense trees around them. “That does sound rather…peculiar. We’ll need to research the Rattata more closely, to ensure that they didn’t have an outbreak of anything.” Last thing they needed were rogue Pokemon who were also sick wreaking havoc through the hillside and infecting other Pokemon. Going out of their way to attack shoes was a different matter all together than simply trying to steal food, after all. She paused at a steep ledge that was nearly half their height and hummed thoughtfully. “Quite an impressive feat, isn’t it?” She pressed her hands on her hips and stared up to top of the ledge. Several smaller trees and bushes gleamed over the edge in greeting, and though Mishu was sure there was just enough room for them to stand on its edge should they scramble up its side, she knew that they needed to find a safer way. “Yes, it’s the next town after Violet actually. Have you already challenged Falkner? Once you’ve gotten your badge it’s a simple trek down route 32 and through Union Cave.” She recalled her own journey to Azalea pretty readily and supposed it could take quite some time if you weren’t trying to make it a straight shot to Azalea. “If we could travel as the Murkrow flies, it would only be a couple of minutes.” Mishu churckled, venturing around the steep ledge and carefully searching until she found an easy incline that they could travel up. “It seems you’re on the other side of the hill, I’m afraid. Great for research and encountering Pokemon in their natural habitat. But…not so great for a quick and easy journey to the estates themselves.” Howling echoed in the distance, announcing a pack of wild dogs who approached them. A menacing looking Poochyena stepped out from the thick underbrush with hackles raised as it narrowed its eyes on the two tasty looking mammals – Adrian and Mishu. A Wild Poochyena Appeared! "...Er, no. I don't have any badges actually." Adrian said as they walked. "But I plan to challenge Falkner soon." A shrug. "This place has been decent for training even if it's entirely incidental." Because he wasn't trying to wander lost in the woods. He was trying to get to the Institute. And apparently he was going the hard way. Locals tricked him! Sigh.
He idly kicked a rock.
Then a chill skittered up his spine as a howl cut through the hills, familiar and haunting. That was the cry of a poochyena before it closed in on its prey. Adrian stepped back as said pup stepped into his vision, clearly hungry and looking to make an easy snack out of them. Adrian, however, was prepared now. He wouldn't be afraid like the last time he encountered a pack of these pokemon. Not when he had his own on his side.
Pulling out a pokeball, he sent out the same pup he caught fairly recently in these woods.
"Sarge! Need some help here." At least he was a little more confident now and not longer screaming like he was dying? "Get some mud in its eyes so it has a harder time seeing us."
The poochyena let out a long Howl of his own, summoning his battling spirit as he answered the call of a fight. "I will protect my pack," he barked at his foe before charging forward and trying to fling mud at his opponent's face to temporarily cloud its vision. If it worked, then this battle should go more in his favor...or so both he and his trainer hoped at least.

Getting to Azalea might prove problematic if Adrian didn’t have Falkner’s badge. It also explained how someone like Adrian might have gotten lost along the way, considering the densely populated woods and steep hills that populated the region around the three cities who seemed nestled against each other with carefully laid routes marked between them. It wasn’t like the other ways around didn’t exist – they were just largely avoided in favor for the survivable passes along the way. After all, there was a strong difference in loving a challenge and just not making it home alive the next day. “Ah, well. I’m sure you’ll do well against him. I’ve battled him before, so if there’s anything you might like to know, I might be able to answer it for you.” She offered with a smile. Mishu’s attention was immediately drawn to the newly found canine. Her eyes sparkled with interest, though she carefully backed away keeping her front half facing the canine as she did so. They were pack animals who hunted together and had sharp teeth that they were known to use to bite at anything that moved. “Oh, splendid! A Poochyena in its natural habitat!” Mishu commented more to herself than to her human companion as she fished out a small journal and began readily taking notes. “I had one of my own before he evolved, but I could always use more notes on their natural behaviors untouched by human’s interventions.” The wild dog curled around Sergeant with its ears pinned firmly against its head and its lips drawn into a vicious snarl. “You’re working for these humans?!” It asked Sarge incredulously, leaping at him to take a particularly nasty bite at his leg. Sarge howled in pain as the wild dog dug into his front paw, drawing blood that flowed freely and mixed with the sandy and grassy ground underfoot. “You’re better than that, brother! Rejoin our pack and help me capture this human as prey once more! We’ll welcome you back if you turn away from his side now. Otherwise, I must hunt you down like the prey you’ve turned yourself into.” As Sargeant kicked up a pile of mud and slung it at the wild dog, the wild Poochyena leaped through the muddied sand and jumped on Sergeant’s back. “Those bite wounds look nasty.” Mishu commented whilst scribbling away contently. She was concerned, though the researcher in her heart kept her poised pad in hand and scribbling eagerly away. “Do you have any medicines to help him in a pinch, should you need it?” She inquired thoughtfully. The wild canine ripped a small chunk of fur and flesh from Sargeant’s back, before being knocked off by Sarge, who turned towards his hungry adversary. “Humans will never be pack members. They only seek to control us.” The Wild Poochyena growled with a vicious snap in the air at Sarge. "Medicine, uh, yeah I do," Adrian replied, hoping that he wouldn't need them in this fight. Sarge was pretty strong, even though he did take a couple nasty bites there, like Mishu said. "You got this, Sarge, Bite back!" With luck, the mud to the eyes would help give them just a little bit of an edge in what appeared to be a relatively evenly matched dogfight. "...You...actually going to learn anything useful watching me battle?" Adrian was feeling rather like a test subject of sorts all of the sudden.
Sarge growled, shaking off the pain from those deep bite wounds.
"This human is my pack now," he argued. "And if you were a brother of mine, you would understand that." Ah how easily loyalties changed when you had a full belly. Having a trainer wasn't so bad. Sarge didn't need to hunt in order to eat. He didn't need to fight for scraps nor lick his hurts for days until they healed. The human took care of that. "And I will protect my pack." With a vicious snarl, the once fearless leader of the little poocheyna pack lunged to bite into his former packmate and brother.
He ignored the ache in his paws and body. This was a battle he had to win.

Mishu nodded her head firmly as she scribbled down the way that the wild dog seemed steadfast and focused on the hunt before them. Sergeant was the same canine in all aspects to the wild Pokemon. He remained focused on the fight, ears pinned and voice full of growls that warned his opponent that he wouldn’t back down. However, Mishu was sure that he wasn’t nearly as feral or focused on the ‘hunt’ as his wild counterpart, whose eyes were wide with a deep seated need to ensure its basic needs were met. “I believe so. I am able to understand the difference in motivation for species of Pokemon in the wild.” Mishu explained. “Many people erroneously believe that Dark Pokemon are ‘evil’ by design. I simply disagree, and have spent my life trying to understand them intimately so that I can dispel many of the myths that surround them.” The wild Poochyena couldn’t believe its ears. This now owned Poochyena was openly speaking heresy as far as it was concerned, though it was sure that Sergeant was once a well respected pack leader. Wasn’t it Sarge who led them in every successful hunt his pack had in the past? There was even rumors that had circulated through the many packs that inhabited the hillside that they managed to successfully track and take down a mighty Sawsbuck through his successful and skillful leadership. “How could you say that?” The other dog snarled menacingly, bravely stepping closer towards Sergeant as it shook its head and pawed at the sands that clung in its eyes. “Don’t you care about the pack you abandoned?!” The two lunged at each other and for a second it looked nothing short of a massive whirlwind of fur and teeth. The wild Poochyena howled in pain as Sarge’s sharp fangs sunk into his side, ripping out tufts of fur and causing bright crimson liquids to seep out and fall onto the fresh grassy ground underfoot. They tangled, twisting, and turning around each other as the wild Poochyena snapped several times in the air until they’d finally found their mark. As the wild Poochyena bit down onto Sergeant’s tail, Sarge would howl in pain as well, before knocking the other Pokemon loose off him. “Would you leave us destitute now that you’ve got this servant of yours? We were your pack. We did everything for you – risked our lives every day for you. And now you choose this…weakling over us?! Your own brothers and sisters?!” It snapped angrily. Those bites kept coming and they were a whirl of fur and claws. Adrian swore as he rummaged for a potion in his pack. Sarge was looking pretty bad, like he was one hard chomp away from losing this fight. The mud to the eyes didn't seem to be slowing his foe down at all.
"Dark types aren't evil but a whole lot of them are really...er...aggressive. Or primal or whatever. Sarge tried to take me and Buddy down for prey when we ran into him and his pack." There, he had the medicine in hand. But how would he get close enough to heal Sarge up?
Buddy, sensing his conflict, grabbed the spray bottle with a vine and a nod of reassurance. She could help! She reached delicately behind the combatants and spritzed Sarge with the Potion to heal him up. He seemed stronger as his injuries stopped seeping and he could get his feet back under himself properly.
He snarled at his former brother.
"Are you claiming yourself and our brothers and sisters so weak and pathetic that they have forgotten how to hunt?" he barked. "Rise through adversity! Become greater! Instead you lay the blame at my paws for your failings. Would you have blamed my corpse should I have left you by death rather than becoming folded into a new pack?"
He growled low as he lunged to bite again. No restraint.

Mishu created detailed notes of how the two fought each other, ripping and tearing at the other’s fur and flesh with their sharp teeth as she nodded her head. “They definitely seem to have a more feral nature.” She hummed thoughtfully in addition to Adrian’s comment. While some weren’t as hard to control or understand, given the sweetness and shyness of her Ziggy for instance, many gave people superstitious beliefs likely due to lack of true knowledge about them. “Which isn’t too hard to believe of any wild Pokemon. Their lives are vastly different, and their needs completely unlike a Pokemon whose basic needs are constantly being met.” The wild Poochyena growled underneath its voice as it lowered its head between its shoulders and raised every tuft of fur on its body. As its fur stood on ends, though, it only highlighted the patchwork of fur that was missing in several places. “We hunt, brother!” Poochyena pawed at the specks of dust that dug further into its eyes and rushed at Sergeant with its mouth wide agape. As it snapped, snarling with large drops of saliva pooling around the corners of its mouth, it would only find bitter leaves and rough twigs instead of the soft fur and gamey flesh of its opponent. “How could you turn to what you once called prey and now call him part of your pack?! And what of us, regardless? Do we mean nothing?!”Sarge leaped on top of the other dog in a vicious, snarling mess. The howls that escaped the wild Poochyena’s lips could make anyone’s blood curl. Something snapped with a loud crack, while fur soared around them in a mess of greys tinted in liquid crimson. When Sarge rolled off the wild Poochyena, it leaped up limping while favoring one of its front legs. It couldn’t bring itself to attack the old leader – not because of a newfound fire of appreciation and adoration that glued it in place. But because it flinched from the excessive pain that flowed through its body. “So you’ve made it clear…” The wild Poochyena barked through narrowed eyes. “Where your loyalties lie. A sickening crunch made Adrian wince. He watched worriedly as the pair of fighting poocheyna broke apart, blood and fur strung about. It was quite ghastly. But Sarge seemingly took it all in stride, panting a bit, his fur bristled up, this latest round of biting and wrestling in his favor. Perhaps the potion helped give him a boost of vitality, enough to land that near ending blow on his foe.
"Dark-types also aren't the only ones who act, er, all feral either. I have a pidgey that I'm still working with to trust me." Adrian admitted. "Sarge warmed up to me faster and he was literally trying to eat me." Apparently being a berry thief was a grave sin that took a while to rectify.
Sarge shook himself off and stepped forwards towards his near defeated foe, "...I have. Be thankful for my restraint, brother." His lips peeled back in a triumphant snarl, white teeth gleaming in the moonlight. Then, he lunged again. Time to end the fight with one last bite. He'd try to grab his former packmate's scruff and haul them into the bushes.
If the hills were kind, his packmate would wake in the morning, wounded and sore, but capable of hunting another black night. But Sarge knew that this place was often cruel. This tiny mercy might lead to more suffering but he had no need to glut himself on the blood of someone he once called friend.

Mishu’s interest piqued. “Pidgey are known to be the gentlest and easiest to capture. While it’s thought that they don’t like to battle, it is noted that they won’t hesitate to attack if provoked, though usually by kicking up sand to scare off their attackers. Yours sounds pretty unique compared to the ones observed and catalogued in the Pokedex.” Mishu added thoughtfully. Did that mean that they might not know Pidgey as well as they thought they did as a species? It would be interesting to see what could cause such behavioral changes, if anything. The wild Pidgey whimpered, pressing its shaggy body against the grassy ground underfoot. The tall blades tickled its sides, though some dug into the wounds that layered its body. It’s paw was gravely hurt, and its breath labored to try and help it find the strength to carry on. “I will report back to the pack.” Poochyena howled sorrowfully with a soft growl and rolled onto its back to submit its belly to its opponent – once packmate – once more. How could Sergeant turn against its own? How could any Poochyena turn against their own? It was senseless to the wild canine, who couldn’t fathom such absurdities. Sarge immediately sunk his fangs into the scruff of the wild dog’s neck and tossed Poochyena off into the woods, away from Adrian and his team. The pup yelped in pain as its back slammed against a boulder and landed in a crumbled heap in the bushy woodlands nearby. Howls rose up around them, no doubt from the pack that surrounded them. Then, as a few grabbed their wounded packmate to drag it away, the howls would slowly and surely die off far into the woods. Only one head – a small pup looking very similar to Sarge in shape and markings – popped out. “We’ll never forget you. Or the side you chose.” It spat at the ground, before running off with the rest. "I mean...he did kick up a bunch of sand," Adrian admitted. "He was guarding some berries he found. And then for while, every time I sent him out, he got really fussy and would throw a fit for a bit before calming down. He, er, actually still has one of the berries he was guarding. I haven't actually been able to take away the pecha berry...though I also haven't tried for a while..."
About then, the battle came to an end, Sarge tossing his brother into the bushes for his pack to drag away to recover. He barked at the small pup who came to snip out a retort, "Our paths have split. But...I wish none of you ill. Go. Let us not meet again." He retreated to Adrian, who knelt and checked him over. Some more medicine and a quick wipe down with a cloth wet with some water from a bottle helped get the pup right as rain once again.
"...Hn. Well...maybe it would be best for me to head back to the pokemon center then. I think I know the way back and if what you said is true then, well, it's probably faster to just...find the proper way to the estate." He motioned back towards where they'd come. Though it wasn't a direct path. "Could you, er, give me directions to the Institute from the main road?" And he'd also offer the location of the Pokemon Center he was basically rooming at for now as he tried in vain to get to the Institute properly.
And then he'd make to head back from where he came.

Hiiissssss! They were in its territory. Prey that was too big to eat. Strange creatures that fought back and chased everything off. Tight coils fell limp to the ground as it struck out, slamming into the ground with a flash of purple darting far off through the grasses to freedom. Yess!! Surely it thought, living to see another day. Nooo! There was no way that these two humans could escape. Slit eyes narrowed as a forked tongue slipped between thick, scaly lips. Scents sifted through the air. Tasty. Mammalian. Hunger clawed at the wild snake’s stomach, promising it soon they would be full. They had to be full. They were dying to be full. Soon! Mishu turned on her feet as she nodded her head slowly. “It might be the long way about it, but yes.” She admitted. Surely any way at this point might be the long way about it, if you considered it. Right? “Oh, watch out!” Mishu pointed, quickly backing up as she noticed the large rattlesnake coiling up in preparation to strike at them. Preeeyyy. It would take aim, preparing one last time. Out of them all, the wild dog whose anger seemed to know no bounds was the easiest. Or that strange plant with a bulb on its back. All it needed to do was aim…wait…AND STRIKE! As it lunged at its prey – whatever that may be – it would leap with its mouth stretched open and two sharp fangs poking out from the top of its roof. They would learn why you didn’t make too much noise deep in the woods. Chase off its prey and you become the prey. A Wild Ekans appeared! Level 8. What will Adrian do?
