Today was a day filled with firsts for Shinya and Joltik. It was their first visit to Johto's National Park, their first time competing in the Bug Catching Contest, and possibly their first time seeing some of the species of Bug type Pokemon found during this event. Even though he was a Bug type specialist himself, Shinya had never really had any interest in this contest. But recently, he had been hearing rumors that some new and very interesting Bug types had started appearing during said contest. Including some that somehow came all the way from the Paldea region. The Team Skull grunt hadn't really planned on adding any new Pokemon to his already strong and well-balanced team, but that could all change in just one day, depending on what kind of Pokemon he'd encounter and end up walking away from this event with.
"Oh boy! Oh boy! I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself, boss! Thank ya so much for choosing me for this event! I promise I won't let ya down!" Joltik excitedly commented from her position on Shinya's right shoulder, sparks coming off her tiny body as a result, as she nuzzled herself up against her beloved trainer's right cheek to show her affection. Because of the sparks that were coming off of the Attaching Pokemon's body, some of the hair on Shinya's head started to stand on end, but he didn't seem to mind much, gently rubbing the top of Joltik's head with one finger. "Well, you've got Thunder Wave in your arsenal, Joltik. Choosin' you for a capture event was a no-brainer. Looks like we've got some pretty tough competition right off the bat though." The Alolan trainer commented himself, looking around the National Park and seeing that two other trainers have already encountered a Scyther and a Dustox, respectively.
If Shinya and Joltik were going to win this contest, they'd need something far more substantial than a simple Caterpie or Kakuna. But with so many new Pokemon around, Shinya couldn't help but grin, feeling pretty good about their chances. "Well, what are we waitin' for, Joltik? We can't let the rest of these guys get ahead of us, now, can we? Let's go find us somethin' that really stands out from the rest." With that, Shinya took his first steps into the tall grass, searching for any wild Bug types that really stood out from the crowd. "Yeah! Yeah! We'll win this contest and show the rest of these people and Pokemon how it's done! Nobody's better with Bug types than you, boss!" Joltik complimented her trainer, then immediately used her four eyes to search out any nearby wild Pokemon herself, every bit as determined as Shinya was to win this contest and maybe make a new friend too.

Half-hidden in a little hiding hole in the ground, a not-so-new bug watched the trainer and Joltik. It wasn't as big or strong as some of the pokemon roaming around here, so it had to be careful. Sneaky. Like a ninja. However, even ninja's would be seen if their foe nearly steps on them! It squeaked in surprise as it scuttled away to avoid being squished!!! BCC Encounter

Admittedly, neither Shinya nor Joltik picked up on the wild Nincada's presence until it made that squeaking sound, as Shinya came to a stop and they both looked down at the Bug/Ground type. Honestly, the most surprising part was that something slipped past the sight of even Joltik's Compound Eyes ability. "Huh. Impressive stealth skills, little guy, but ya just wasted one of our five encounters of this contest. Not sorry, but we're gonna have to hurt ya now. Joltik, show this pipsqueak what an Energy Ball tastes like." As soon as Shinya gave the order, Joltik began building up massive amounts of energy in the form of a green ball that was oddly bigger than her entire body. "Suck on this, pipsqueak!" The tiny Bug type fired her Energy Ball attack right down at the Trainee Pokemon, never once leaving her cozy position on Shinya's right shoulder for even a moment.

With the Trainee Pokemon skittering away to another hidey hole, Shinya and Joltik moved on, continuing their search for wild Bug type Pokemon. Hopefully, ones that were rarer and stronger than the one they just effortlessly defeated. "Tch. A Nincada? Please. We can do better than that. Besides, we already got one of those." Shinya voiced his thoughts on their first encounter of this season's Bug Catching Contest, recalling his time spent on the Secluded Island, when he used his Nincada to help combat the various legendary Pokemon that popped up. "Oh! This is so exciting! What will we find next?! The suspense is killing me!" Joltik did the same, voicing her own thoughts as well, but with far more enthusiasm than her trainer.

Given that they both had incredibly good eyesight, Joltik and Venonat noticed each other at the exact same time, their multiple eyes meeting and Joltik immediately letting Shinya know. "Oh! Oh! Hey, boss! How about that one?! Is that one good enough?!" With the small Pokemon yelling right in his ear, the green-haired trainer heard her loud and clear, then turned to see what she found. Unfortunately, Shinya was once again disappointed with the result. "Now it's a Venonat? Tch. Better, but still nowhere near good enough for our reputation or to win this contest. Joltik, use Electroweb as many times as ya need to. Get this furball outta our way, then let's keep lookin' for somethin' worth our time." Wanting to make it up to her master for her less than satisfactory find, Joltik jumped right off of his shoulder, and tossed an electrically charge web down at the Bug/Poison type.

It would be a lie if Shinya said that he wasn't frustrated by the outcome of the first round of this battle. However, it would've also been a lie if he said that he didn't see this coming. Much like his fellow type specialist trainer, Venominon Ouroboros, Shinya knew almost everything about the Bug type Pokemon he dedicated himself to training. There wasn't a single thing this Venonat, or any other Bug type Pokemon could do that would catch him off guard. To that end, the Team Skull grunt already had a counter strategy in mind, and a Pecha Berry in his right hand, which he grabbed immediately after Joltik leaped off his shoulder and into the fray. "Joltik, I know you're confused, but I also know that you're stronger than that overgrown fuzzball! So, here! Take this and get it together!"
Shinya called out to his Pokemon, tossing the Pecha Berry in his grip to her at the same time. The pink-colored fruit landed on the ground right in front of the confused Bug/Electric type, and even in that state, she was still able to hear her trainer's words and devour the fruit. Once the berry was gone, so was the poison that Venonat inflicted upon her, causing some of her strength and focus to return. She may have still been confused for the moment, but Shinya was confident that she'd be able to fight through it and nail the Insect Pokemon with a second attack. "Now, use Electroweb again! Pay that fuzzball back for what it did to ya!" Doing her best to focus at least one of her four eyes on Venonat, Joltik quickly spun another web, then let it fly, as both she and Shinya hoped that it would hit its target this time.
OOC: Pecha Berry used before attacking.

These opponents weren't nice, it had just said hello and see what they done? It was good its small tricks worked, and it better make sure it continued so. At first the venonat tried the Supoersonic again, but as Joltik was already confused it made little difference. The purple bug was not happy about how better Joltik looked after eating the berry, so when it had shaken off the electric attack, it filled the air with spores once more so that its opponent succumbed to the poison again. (ooc: deducted 1 pecha berry)

Even though she had been freed from the confusion, Joltik wasn't at all happy about getting poisoned for a second time. Unfortunately for Venonat, she still had plenty of stamina to spare, narrowing all four of her eyes at the Insect Pokemon in a glare. "Don't worry about me, boss! I can take it! Let's finish this chump off, then get back to lookin' for some better bugs!" Her body may have been small, and full of poison, but her fighting spirit was still as strong as ever, igniting her trainer's own fighting spirit as well. "Ya read my mind, Joltik! None of these bugs have got anythin' on ya! Now, use Electroweb one more time! We got better places to be than wastin' time with this chump!" With a fresh grin on his face, Shinya gave Joltik her orders, and she quickly made yet another web of electrically charged thread, tossing it right at Venonat for a third time.

With the battle now over, Venonat fell unconscious, trapped beneath Joltik's third Electroweb, while Joltik herself gained a bit more power from her victory. Of course, she was still hurt and under the effects of Venonat's Poison Powder. So, rather than make her climb back up onto his shoulder, Shinya walked over to her, gently picked her up, and grabbed another Pecha Berry and a Potion from his bag. "Here. Eat up, Joltik. We'll need ya at full strength if we manage to find somethin' worth catchin'." The Bug type trainer's tone of voice was one of compassion at that moment, but there was still plenty of competitiveness behind it. He did care about each of his Pokemon dearly, but he still wanted to win this contest.
Accepting her trainer's generosity, Joltik quickly downed the Pecha Berry, and held still so said trainer could spray her with the Potion. It stung a little, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. Once the Potion container was empty, Shinya tossed it over his shoulder, once again demonstrating that he didn't care about littering one bit. Several seconds later, Joltik was back up to full strength and filled with new and improved energy. "Hey! Hey! I feel great! So much better! Thanks, boss!" The tiny Pokemon smiled up at Shinya, while he smiled back at her and placed her back on his right shoulder. "Glad to hear it. Now, where were we?" Shinya asked a rhetorical question, then resumed hiking through the tall grass, searching for their next wild Bug type encounter.
OOC: Another Pecha Berry and a Potion used on Joltik before moving on.

By this point, Shinya and Joltik were roughly halfway through their go around in the Bug Catching Contest, and they had nothing to show for their efforts. Unless you counted Joltik's level growth. Unfortunately, the judges of this competition likely wouldn't. Taking another look around at the other trainers roaming around the National Park, it became clear to the Bug type trainer that if he was to win this contest, he'd need to find a Bug type Pokemon that truly stood at, or at least close to the top of the food chain. And it seemed fate had finally smiled down upon the Bug type pair, as Joltik's keen vision soon picked out another wild Pokemon through the tall grass. "Boss! Boss! Looky! Looky! It's another Bug type! Should we try and catch this one?! Huh?! Huh?! Should we?!"
One look at the wild Pokemon that Joltik spotted, and Shinya's eyes grew wide for a moment, surprised by the sudden appearance of such a strong and rare Pokemon. "Hmph! Not exactly what I had in mind, but this guy might still be good enough to snag us first place at least! Good work, Joltik! Let's get it! Use your Thunder Wave on Karrablast now!" In all honesty, Shinya had been hoping to hunt down and capture a Bug type from the Paldea region, or at least something strong and fierce that he didn't already have in this collection. Still, even though he already had a Karrablast, and at a higher level than the wild one before him, he didn't want to take any chances. This may end up being his and Joltik's only rare encounter of the entire competition, and if he let it get away, he'd surely regret it.
Joltik shared her green-haired trainer's feelings on the matter, jumped down from his shoulder once more to meet her latest foe in battle. Of course, since this was strictly a capture encounter, she knew she'd have to hold back this time. "Just leave it to me, boss! This blue bug is ours! Then victory will be ours too!" The Attaching Pokemon generated some powerful sparks from her body as she yelled out her words, sending those sparks flying towards the Clamping Pokemon in the form of waves of pure electricity. While this was going on, Shinya grabbed a Sport Ball from his bag, and waited to see if Joltik's paralysis would do its job. If it did, the Team Skull grunt would throw the ball as hard as he could right at the pure Bug type Pokemon.
OOC: Sport Ball used on Karrablast after Thunder Wave. And 427 words for the Scraggy egg in Shinya's party. Thank you.
