- This is a serious safety concern!
A sharp yell pierced the tranquil air of Route 29, causing several Hoothoot to flutter off their branches and Sentret to scurry out of bushes. Two men stood at the edge of New Bark Town, their gazes fixed on a departing bus bound for Cherrygrove City. Diego bid farewell to his roadies, carrying nothing but a pink acoustic guitar slung over his back, a few empty pokeballs fastened to his belt, a fluffy Growlithe cradled in his arms, and an Aron at his side. Behind him, Miguel paced nervously in circles. - You may not be as big in Johto as you are in Paldea, but you're still recognizable! - the man with short hair reasoned. - What if someone attacks and robs us?!
Diego turned towards his friend, confusion evident in his eyes. - ¿Qué? - he exclaimed. - Isn't that what Pokémon are for? To protect us...? - Diego, these Pokémon are literal babies! It's like hiring a toddler as your bodyguard! - Relax, man. - Diego said, his heavy hands gently patting Miguel's arm. - What are they going to rob us of? I have fifty different guitars on standby. We didn't take any money either. - he took a deep breath, then turned towards the path leading into the wilderness of the route. A soft breeze ran through his long, bright pink hair. - Children do it. This is part of the journey, this is how trainers bond with their Pokémon! - he declared with newfound determination, placing his hands on his hips.
- They tend to go out during the day, you know. - Miguel mumbled resignedly. It seemed futile to reason with Diego at this moment. It was one of the first times Diego had started to take charge of his own life, and this was how he chose to do it - the most reckless and foolish way possible. - I feel alive at night. - Diego retorted. His performances always took place after the sun had set. It was his time to shine, and it was no different now - except this time, the performance wouldn't be on stage.
- "Can we go already? I want to kick some butt!" - a metallic screech emanated from Vida the Aron within her shell. Diego crouched down, releasing the Growlithe he held and regarding the metallic Pokémon with concern. - I hope she's not scared... - Doubt cast a shadow over him. - "No! I'm SO ready to wreck these noobs! Come on, let's go, let's DO IT!" - Vida stomped her tiny feet on the ground. - Oh, sweet merciful Arceus, please. - Miguel mouthed a tiny prayer, covering his face with his hands and peeking out between his fingers. - You are so clueless. I've never seen a Pokémon more ready to battle. - he explained politely. - Huh! - Diego stood up straight. - Alright! Let's go and face this challenge together, Vida. You too, Luna! - he said, smiling at his Pokémon as they charged ahead on the path, with Miguel following warily behind them.

The night wind blew as Diego and their friend continued in the very quiet route near the city. unbeknownst to them this quiet night was not to last. As most pokemon laid down for the evening those who prefer the night begin to stir. As the pair pass a small set of shrubs a hootoot flies away as if it had just been attacked. - Oh... oh! - Diego gasped as the small worm and its kin jumped out in their way. His eyes glimmered at the sight of the small pink Wurmple and its family emerging from the shrubbery to greet them. Falling to his knees in front of the leader of worms, completely oblivious to its agitation, he attempted to pet it. - Look at it! Look how precious it is! - he cooed at the tiny creature, while Luna stood equally oblivious, her tongue freely hanging from between her teeth.
Miguel shifted uncomfortably. - Diego, they are NOT welcoming us! - His warnings fell on deaf ears as the musician couldn't resist getting his hands on the wild Pokémon. Miguel exchanged a knowing look with Vida, silently agreeing that their friends were grade A idiots. Seeing Diego potentially about to face the consequences of his actions and knowing Vida wasn't fast enough to prevent it, Miguel decided to take action. - Luna, Bite! - he commanded the Growlithe, who reacted without much thought - a human said "Bite," so she was going to Bite. With a leap, she aimed to sink her teeth into the soft body of the Wurmple.
Diego... well, technically Miguel sends out Luna! Luna used Bite!

[ 'Get away!'] Wurmple stated as it approached the humans, its eyes narrowed and slanted as it let out the loudest most intimidating noises it could to protect its younger siblings. The Wurmple tries to growl out in an attempt to get them to just leave, but alas its cries fell on deaf ears. The human made a command, and the mysterious dog pokemon that Wurmple had never seen before lunged towards it, and the Wurmple would take advantage of its size to try to dart under and past the dog, hoping to attack the human and scare them both off since the Firey Pokemon seemed to be obeying the human. Alas, the Growlithe had turned around and quickly wrapped its mouth around Wurmple regardless, the Worm Pokemon crying out in pain as it was tossed over Growlithe's 'shoulder' and back towards its crew. ['Big Bro!'] Cried out one of the small Wurmple being protected by the bigger one, similar cries ringing out as they all moved forwards in attempt to come to its aide.
['R-Run away! This one's too strong!'] ['R-Run away! This one's too strong!'] Wurmple cried out as it released a string of sticky webs from its mouth, swinging its head about as to attempt to cover as wide an area as possible, the strings covering bits of Growlithe's body awkwardly in 'connection' to make it harder to move.
The smaller Wurmple would all run off into the brush, some of them had to team up to drag another member that refused to run away, crying out for its brother all the same. At the same time, a sudden gust would shift through the area as a mysterious sandstorm would kick up, wrecking havoc through the area.

Diego watched in horror as his beloved Growlithe attacked the poor little worm, causing panic among its kin. - Miguel! - he shouted, standing up to confront his friend. - ¡¿Por qué hiciste eso?! - Diego was visibly upset. The shorter man frowned.
- Are you kidding me? What if the bloody thing shot a Poison Sting at you? You'd be out of shows for weeks! - Miguel retorted, gesticulating sharply at the Wurmple. - Wild Pokémon are not toys to hug, man! They're going to attack you and your Pokémon! That would SO cost us!
- B-but... - Diego hesitated for a moment. - Money doesn't matter to me; it's about understanding Pokémon, remember? - the two men stared each other down for a solid second. While Miguel's glare remained unmoved, Diego slowly started to crumble. Eventually, Miguel turned to Luna, who unfazed by the sticky substance hindering her movements and waiting for more commands.
- Use Rock Throw, Luna! - he commanded. Diego couldn't believe his friend would do this to him, especially at the very start of their journey! Desperately, he reached for his belt, unclipping one of the empty Pokéballs he was carrying. He clumsily threw it at Wurmple just before Luna hurled a solid-sized boulder at it, hoping the device would save the poor thing from an inevitably painful defeat.

Suddenly, the sandstorm seemed to clear away. The air was stiller. It was easier to breathe. Those rocks plunged towards the little worm, sending any hope of aid scrambling for cover. It was all alone as those rocks came down, down, down. The wurmple scree'd in alarm, curling up into a tight little ball to try to endure the hit...but before those rocks could crush it into a buggy pancake...a little capsule flew through the air and pinged off its back. There was a pop and then a ping. Red light flashed and rocks crashed. After some inspection and clearing away the tiny boulders, the young men would find the pokeball still and warm. The worm was nowhere in sight. That meant the catch had been successful. Nobody got squished into oblivion today! As for the other wurmples? Well. They were gone now. All that remained was a warm breeze on this balmy summer evening.

The pink-haired rockstar's hand trembled with excitement as he reached for the pokeball, lifting it to eye level. His eyes sparkled with anticipation - this was his first Pokémon capture, a milestone achieved on Johtonian soil within hours of his arrival. It didn't matter that it was just a small pink worm; to him, it symbolized a monumental step in his journey as a trainer. - Eres... Hermoso. - he whispered to the Wurmple, his voice filled with heartfelt sincerity. - I promise to take good care of you. Treats and naps whenever you want, I swear.
Miguel, observing with crossed arms, couldn't help but smile at Diego's enthusiasm, even if he wasn't as thrilled about the bug-type Pokémon. Seeing Diego so genuinely happy warmed his heart, reminding him of the importance of simple joys amidst life's disappointments.
- You DID try to faint it. - Diego retorted, reality crashing down on their blissful moment like a Garganacl. - You DID try to get stupidly hurt! - Miguel countered, but then softened. - But that's in the past. Hold onto Hermoso; he evolves fast, and it'll be a sight to rock your hair off! - Diego's curiosity was piqued. - What does he evolve into? - he asked eagerly. Miguel chuckled. - I won't spoil it; Hermoso could become several things. Let's see which one he chooses!
Their banter was interrupted by Aron's metallic humming, eager for battle, and Luna's contented presence, her tongue lolling out happily. Diego glanced down at his starter with a mixture of amusement and concern. - I guess you didn't get to do much, huh, Vida? - he mused, bending down to pet her shell, only to be met with more stomps and an impatient demeanor. "I. WANT. FIGHT. Let me at them already!" Vida's determination was evident, though perhaps a bit unexpected. - Didn't think we got you such a murderous Aron. They told us it was supposed to be tame. - Miguel remarked, his concern evident as he observed Vida's unruly behavior. - She has attitude! Character! Oh, I can't wait for the show! - Diego exclaimed, a hint of excitement in his voice despite Vida's feisty nature. - Then let's move on. The sooner we reach Cherrygrove, the sooner we can start planning. - Miguel replied, taking the lead and setting off ahead with a cautious glance back at Diego and his spirited Pokémon. Hopefully, no more angry worms would cross their path on the journey ahead.

The quiet day carried on relatively the same, with a gentle breeze shifting through the tall emerald blades, causing the grasses before them to dance in the wind. There was a quiet stirring. Small chirps and loud squeaks from wild creatures wandering through the tall grasses in the distance. Some of the limbs in the canopies overhead shuddered, evidence of a hidden creature who quickly moved out of the way as Diego and Miguel approached the area, alongside a rather battle-ready Aron. They would come across a large farm well kept up with and littered with several fences to separate the different species. Some bulls charged in a herd near the back of the farm, with large white horses full of fiery manes chasing at their heels. Along the sides were two species of sheep. One had a black body with thick white wool, making them look like round fluffy balls as they walked in a slow amble and chewed at bits of grass within their fields. The other had a bright blue body with rich, creamy wool that generated electricity. Along the front of the house were several species of pigs chasing each other about, with small ducks of various species gathered around a small pond. A young girl clad in farmer’s gear with a wide brimmed hat atop her head and a long, braided rope in one hand turned to Diego and Miguel as they approached and waved one hand in greeting. “Howdy, ya’ll!” He greeted with a wide smile, pushing one corner of her hat up on her head with a rather serious look on her face. “I’m sorry but the tour of New Bark’s oldest farm is off the table. We’s gots us some lost critters who plum wandered off our farm.” She explained with a shrug. She would turn away from Deigo and his friends, wanting to get back to tracking them down. “Less ya’s trainers or somethin’ an’ wanna help us out? We put up fliers everywhere but ya know….gettin’ help is hard to come by these days…” She admitted with a sigh. Farmhand Brenda needs your help wrangling her critters! Diego was immediately captivated by the area as soon as he noticed the fenced farm Pokémon. Enamoured by the sight, he ran towards the fences, scanning the Pokémon out and about: Ponyta, Wooloo, Mareep! All content with their life, well-fed and taken care of—the electric sheep’s wool shone beautifully as sparks ran across its body. Wooloo seemed perfectly round. Ponyta had huge, impressive manes, effectively working as living torches for the farm.
- Dulce cielo, Migueeel… - the sight of the well-cared-for Pokémon made Diego nearly fall to his knees. - Look at them! So happy, so content! Even the Tauros has gained colours! They're just SO happy... - he sniffled, melting over the farm Pokémon's cuteness in real time. Miguel grabbed the soft-hearted rockstar by his arm, trying to keep him standing. - Sweet Enamorus, gather yourself! It's just a farm! - the young manager tried to reason with his partner, but Diego seemed to focus all of his energy on getting choked up about how happy the Pokemon were.
As Miguel struggled to keep Diego from falling to the ground, their moment was interrupted by the farm’s possible owner, a young cowgirl with an intriguing accent. The musician stood up and greeted her politely, curious about what she had to say. When she mentioned lost Pokémon, Diego’s eyes lit up. Miguel looked at him with a weary gaze, knowing exactly what was going through his pink-haired head.
- No, Diego, we don’t have the tim- - We’ll help you find your lost Pokémon! - the musician announced. The one time Diego decided something on his own, and it had to be now of all times. Miguel sighed heavily. - Do you want to do the show in Cherrygrove or not? - he asked in a half-resigned tone. - We can reschedule. There are lost, cute, and scared Pokémon somewhere around here! - Diego argued, then turned towards the cowgirl. - Sweetheart, do you have anything with their scents? My Growlithe, Luna, may be able to track them down! - he pointed to his companion, who was mindlessly watching the Ponyta chasing each other around.
Diego accepts the quest!

"Aye, mate! Thanks hun! They shouldn't wander off too far. They have small short legs and kinda youn'. They're a lil too youn' ta be running fast." Brenda smiled brightly as she handed another flier to Diego. "These are mah critters if you see them. There ain't other people with these Pokemon, so they're definitely mine.""Quackers's a curious one. You'll probably see him watchin' something like a rock intensely. Woolly is a newborn so he might've be scared of you. Chunky likes getting himself dirty. Thankfully I never bring him inside ta house!" She pointed as she spoke of her Pokemon, giving clues that she hoped would be helpful. She then returned to the farm to tend to her non-runaway Pokemon. Sitting on a fence post that Brenda didn't notice was a Spearow. It cawed and then flew away from the farm. Was it disturbed by Brenda returning to work, or did it noticed or smelled something? Avian Pokemon were known for their sharp sights. Follow the Spearow? Or 🤷🤷 Go find them on your own. 🤷🤷

Diego looked at the flier, immediately recognizing a muddy Lechonk, one of Paldea's very own native Pokémon. What a relief to see something familiar this far from home! He smiled, noting how the Pokémon looked and behaved, alongside the lost Wooloo, so young it hadn't yet reached its round shape, and a cute, focused Psyduck. All of them seemed to be some of the main attractions of the farm. And now these Pokémon were lost somewhere... what an unbearable thought! What if they got hurt?! There was no time to waste!
- I'll keep that in mind! I promise, they'll return safe and sound. - he nodded, determination in his eyes.
A sudden cawing from a Spearow immediately drew Diego's attention. It flew off, startled, which the new trainer instantly decided was a clue to the missing critters.
- A-ha! That bird knows something we don't! - the rockstar exclaimed, taking off after it with both his Aron and Growlithe in tow.
- Come on! You can't just run after every random Pokémon! - Miguel shouted, running after him.
Diego's heart pounded with excitement and worry as he sprinted, his eyes fixed on the Spearow. It swooped and darted through the air, leading them through the maze of trees and fields surrounding the farm. Diego's mind raced as fast as his feet. What if the Spearow had seen the lost Pokémon? What if it could lead them straight to them?
As they ran, Miguel struggled to keep up. - Diego, slow down! We need to think this through! - he panted, but Diego was too focused to listen.

Following a random spearow might seem like a giant leap of faith in the wrong direction, because what would that wild spearow know of the situation? However, the bird flew a ways before roosting high in a tree, glaring at at something below like it offended it by existing. Upon closer investigation, the bright yellow down of a psyduck cut through the greenery, and the trainer would find said bird just...sitting there. In a shallow puddle. Staring down. At itself? Hard to tell but it was absolutely transfixed by something. Though why would spearow care about Quacker's potential vanity? Perhaps because they were thirsty? There wasn't a lot of water around, and a few other spearow were scattered around nearby, looking irritated and occasionally hopping forward to poke at the duck with their beaks. When the psyduck failed to react, they would flutter back and continue to hop around in agitation. Now, anybody who knew anything about spearow knew that aggravating one bird could sometimes provoke a flock to violence. So perhaps it was best to intervene now before one of them got the bright idea to swarm the duck.

Against all odds and any semblance of common sense, the random Spearow did indeed lead them to something! Diego pulled out the flier to confirm that the Pokémon before them was the same one they had been searching for. He scanned the flier, then the Psyduck, repeating the process several times. Truth be told, he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this Psyduck and a wild one... but given the scarcity of Psyduck in the area, this had to be the right one. Especially since it seemed to be focusing so intensely.
- Oh good, that was fast. - Miguel sighed, panting heavily from their hurried search.
- I'm... not sure what it wants. - Diego whispered, anxiety spiking within him. Was it the water? Its reflection? Something else entirely? He struggled to figure out how to coax the Psyduck to follow them safely, observing the nearby Spearow warily.
- Only one way to find out. - Miguel said determinedly. He set down a briefcase containing important papers for Diego and other miscellaneous items, including a couple of water bottles. He picked up one bottle and extended his arm towards the yellow Pokémon, inching closer.
- Hey there! Look what I've got for you! - Miguel called out gently, letting a small stream of water trickle from the bottle to catch the Psyduck's attention. - You don't need to sit in that dirty puddle when you can have this fresh, tasty water! - Come on, little Quackers. - Diego encouraged softly, seeing his friend inching the bottle closer. - This is much better than that puddle. Follow us, and we'll take good care of you. "Move your butt, you fatso!" Vida decided to chime in, determined clicks reverberating within her metallic shell. "We ain't got all day! Quackers was a steadfast Pokemon in many ways, though what actually clicked behind that thick skull of his remained a mystery. In truth, since his hatching from his egg several weeks ago, the farm had quite the trouble trying to keep their new duckling within its pastures. Something called to Quackers in the vast wilderness past their home. Was it the appeal of being wild? The allure of all the exciting journeys it wished to go on? Or just shiny rocks catching its attention and captivating its mind? Spearow flapped its wings and puffed itself up indignantly. Clearly, its patience was growing thinner by the second. Where it called and herded a human to come get they child, figuratively speaking, the human remained completely dense. A burst of sharp air cut through the chatter to slash one of the bottles open, no doubt to spill its water on the ground. It landed on the dirt of the earth and scratched, pointed beak aimed firmly at the yellow duck. Take it back now!Quackers turned and tilted its head and blinked. As Diego called out, shaking the other water freely that he offered, the small Psyduck’s head would just tilt to one side then the other. Absolutely nothing of value seemed to click in the space between his eyes. “Psy?” Vida yelled, voice threatening in some ways, in an attempt to hurry the wily duck along. It stood up and slowly opened his wide beak with a loud yawn. “Dduuuuuccckkkk!” As he yawned, a powerful blast of water would escape his beak, aimed straight for Diego’s head! - Wh-hey! - Miguel flinched as Spearow’s sharp wind attack sliced through the plastic bottle, spilling water all over the ground. The precious liquid pooled around their feet, quickly soaking into the dirt.
Vida stomped angrily, her eyes narrowing at the mischievous bird. - "What is your problem, you overgrown Poké Toy?!" - she growled, trying to make herself appear as big and intimidating as possible. - "Do that again and I'll bury your feathery morsel!" - with clear anger, she stomped her front leg, causing a medium-sized boulder to shoot up from the ground. It slammed into the earth halfway between her and the Spearow, a clear warning that she wasn’t to be messed with.
The commotion did the trick - it finally grabbed the Psyduck’s attention. The enigmatic Pokémon, which had been lost in its own world, suddenly noticed their presence and made a few curious noises. - Oh, hey! Hello, Quackers. Let’s get you out of here, alright? - Diego inched closer to the Psyduck, speaking softly to avoid startling it. But just as he thought he was making progress, the water type yawned - then unexpectedly blasted a Water Gun straight at him.
The force of the water sent Diego stumbling back, landing unceremoniously in the mud that had formed earlier from the spilled bottle. His soaking wet hair clung to his face, and to make matters worse, all the carefully applied makeup was now dripping off. - UGH, it's all RUINED! - Miguel lamented, throwing his hands up in frustration as he took in the aftermath of Psyduck’s attack. - You're all in mud, and now we'll have to redo the makeup! It’s going to take HOURS!
Diego let out a deep sigh, quite surprised but remaining calm as a small forest brook. - It’s okay. It’s fine. - he reassured Miguel, though the wet mud seeping into his clothes felt a bit weird and inconvenient. Determined not to let the setback discourage him, Diego moved the right side of his long pink hair out of his face and got back to his feet. He approached the Psyduck again, this time more cautiously, gently reaching out to pick it up into his arms. - Come, little one. We don’t want to hurt you, okay? - he cooed in a soft, calming tone, hoping to soothe the Pokémon.
