That Poor Rattata, it was already hurt from being turned into a 100 points, and then as it got up, it saw that she was about to prepare a Pokeball to capture it like one of its many friends in this grassy route! NO! It would not be just another footnote in the annuls of Rattata history! It turned and attempted to make a B-line away, timed such it looked as though the Pokeball would miss altogether. [ "Hah! Take that y'hag!"] Squeaked out the Rattata in Rattata-ese. And as it ran, suddenly it would be hit by a familiar terrapin torpedo! It seemed Shelbert has not stopped being a living reference and had bonked off a tree and returned to sender, and had thus made a return run and knocked into the Rattata. [ "The Void!?"] Cried out the Rattata as it was knocked into the air and right into the Pokeball's path, being bonked by it and being converted to light. The Ball squirmed and struggled, refusing to give him! And yet, the Ball eventually yielded before the trainer, stopping and letting out a gentle 'ding', the white button turning green.
Congratulations, you've Captured Rattata! Please fill out the code in your next post and your party will be updated. RattataName: [choose] Gender: [choose] Level: 3 OT: Eloise Langstrom Ability: [Run Away] or [Guts] Attacks: Tackle, Tail Whip Nature/Personality: [choose] Shelbert has gained two levels! The pokeball shook. Its violent jostling grew more and more subdued, until finally...CLICK! Ellie breathed a sigh of relief. She smiled softly. It was over. She'd won, but this victory did not inspire the same celebration as before. It was tainted, soured by just how mad and scared she had gotten...She hurt Shelbert's feelings. Screamed at him like her parents screamed at her...The little squirtle peaked out from its shell, weary of another outburst from his trainer. Ellie's cheeks flushed hot with shame. I...I didn't mean to yell, I was just so wired... Though it wasn't Shelbert she had gotten mad at. Not entirely. She was mad at herself for making a mistake, for not being a good trainer. How am I supposed to explain that? Ellie couldn't force herself to look at Shelbert. She heard him poking around the dig site where the ratatta was hard at work digging some shiny object up.
He's scared. Of me. Of what I'll do next. Uhhhhhhhhhhhg why are pokemon so complicated?!? "Hey..." Ellie began. "I...I...I didn't mean to yell..." was all she could manage. Every word felt like a tooth being pulled. "I...I mean we...we had him by the tail, and then it all went wrong, and I..." Shelbert looked up at Ellie. His eyes big and trusting like a child's. Ellie had eyes like that once, in another life. "I'm sorry for yelling, little guy. I'm as new to this as you are...Maybe together we can... not suck as bad in the future?" Ellie smiled gently. She was no moral paragon. She had sense enough to know that, but she wasn't the type to hurt others for pleasure. The small blue turtle approached and Ellie got down on her knees again. She held her hand out. Shelbert waddled over and began nibbling on her fingers. "Ow..." A little weird, but ok. She didn't think there was any malice behind it. Just Shelbert being Shelbert.
"Ok, ok, enough of that... Let's inspect the loot." Ellie went over to inspect the rattata's dig site. What could have been so interesting to be worthy of its rapt attention? Ellie fished the shiny object. it was a small foil bag. The kind potato chips come in. Figures it didn't take much to get a rattata's attention.
Suddenly, Ellie got an idea...
"Shelbert, are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Ellie looked over at Shelbert who was playing in the dirt and didn't seem to be thinking much of anything. Ellie reached and grab the treasure from the ground. Then, she grabbed the now occupied pokeball and released its inhabitant.
The rattata hissed and looked around nervously. It was more than a little disoriented. "Hey." Ellie said, neutrally. She shook the foil bag in her hand to get its attention. "Looking for this?" The creature eyed her, uncertain of her intentions. "Take it." Ellie dropped the bag unceremoniously. "It's of no use to me." The rat ran towards the bag, inspecting its contents the only way it knew how, by sticking its head inside. Ellie took advantage of the distraction by reaching into her own bag and pulling out the loose pokesnack from earlier. She broke it in two and tossed one half on the ground in front of her.
The rattata, now wearing the chip bag like a hat sniffed at the brown rectangular prism of nutrients. Then it gobbed the thing up like a woodchipper eats logs. Ellie took a knee and continued staring at the small rat. "Shelbert, to me!" she called. Sure enough, the squirtle approached, its gait wide and unsteady. This creature remembered Shelbert well, and his presence would shift the balance of power. Shelbert was the beatstick. Ellie was the face. To show she didn't want another fight, she threw the other half of the pokesnak on the ground. The rattata ate it much the same as before.
"I don't know if you can understand me. Maybe I'm fooling myself... Anyways, you're lucky you ran into me and not an ekans." Ellie snickered, before collecting herself and trying to continue her cool speech "You ever see those kids running around? You know the type. Shorts, backwards baseball cap. Those losers? Why should you have to live in fear of...school children? I mean, you know they're not looking for skilled warriors or partners. No. They want pets. Something to show off to girls. Me? I have my sights set much higher...Indigo Plateau. See, I'm offering you another way. A better way. You and I should team up, and by the time we're through I promise you'll be in the top percentage of ratticates. What do you say, partner?" Ellie didn't have to work on sounding serious. She was never good at emoting, and for once that came in handy.
Whether the rattata understood her or not, it skittered closer. Ellie stood up. She didn't dare extend a hand. Rattata were as likely to take a finger off as not. "Indy." Ellie said, testing how the name sounded on her tongue. It worked well enough and was totally more original than "Ratty" or something similar. "Shelbert, you deserve some rest. Indy and I are going hunting."
Rattata Name: Indy Gender: Female Level: 3 OT: Eloise Langstrom Ability: [Guts] Attacks: Tackle, Tail Whip Nature/Personality: Indy is all business, all the time. She knows what kinda world she's living in, and it ain't a rattata's world. She's seen her kin caught by irresponsible youngsters or eaten by bigger 'mons. She doesn't have an idealistic bone in her body. A stalwart professional and a mercenary at heart.
Shelbert will forget Tail Whip and learn Rapid Spin!

As it was a lovely day outside, there was plenty of hustle and bustle going on around them in the background. Most of it was happening in the distance, not close enough to be noticed, just background noise in truth. But as the battle was winding down and bonding was starting to occur, there was an alarmed shout that cut through the air. "THIEF! Get back over here with my purse you crook!" That was the shrill call of an enraged middle aged woman. Apparently she had been on a walk on the sleepy oath between New Bark and Cherrygrove, a placid stroll that people made every day, pokemon or no. And at some point, a wild pokemon had taken notice of her bag. It was an expensive sort of purse, it looked designer, new—it was white and clearly fresh from the boutiques of the city. The woman herself was in heels (a poor choice for a stroll) and a flowery sundress that looked like it cost a pretty pokedollar. Her oversized hat and sunglasses probably cost more than some people made in a month—and that bleach blonde haircut much the same. And while one could ponder in absolute bafflement at every decision made here today, it was undeniable that she had been robbed... By a sentret. Lady probably kept snacks in that expensive bag and the opportunist pokemon grabbed the purse in hopes of a tasty treat.

The woman's screams turned Ellie's heart to stone. It sank in her chest. That ancient part of her brain concerned only with primal conquest and preservation kicked into motion. Her rational self was cast out. Her mother had tracked her down and was going to drag her back home by the ear! Though the skittering of a small brown and white critter seemed to add a new variable to the equation.
A woman, the source of the accursed screaming came stumbling after it. The critter was fast, running in a straight line placed it in a collusion course with Ellie and Ratty. The pokemon was laden with a white bag, slowing it down a bit. Suddenly, the world around her ceased to exist. Any other detail or inference was a distraction from the true goal. There was a pokemon and she had to catch it.
"INDY, TACKLE!" Ellie shouted, having learned her lesson from last time. From how fast it was approaching, it was too risky to attempt to order a fanciful maneuver. Just a straight forward tackle. An opposite force to collide against this one, hopefully cancelling it out. Any other planning would depend on the result of the tackle.

"SOMEBODY please get my purse!" The lady shouted as the Sentret ran away with her bag. "I have my medicine and very important things in there!" She was worried as she tried to chase after the furry Pokemon in her unathletic choice of clothing and shoes. Indy darted forward and knocked the Sentret out of balance, but the rodent managed to hold onto the bag without letting it go. This one would take some convincing to let go of the bag. Physical method of convincing. "MINE! It's MINE! It's such a tough material!" The Sentret grabbed the bag, as if rolling into a ball as it ran away. In the process, the rodent toughened up its furs against any future slamming from the Rattata. "Leave me alone! I got the bag fair and square!" The Sentret defended. As Indy charged the sentret, Ellie turned her head. She heard the rodent on rodent collision, but was too scared to look. Indy was no Shelbert. She had no shell or water shooting capabilities. Ellie eased her head back into position and slowly opened her eyes. She could not say if it was courage or curiosity that moved her. Either way, she looked to see the sentret stopped in its tracks. Indy's attack barely left a scratch on the beast. The Sentret still held onto the bag like its life depended on it. There was one silver-lining. Its escape was cut off.
The two rodents glowered at eachother. The sentret took a defensive position, bracing for a prolonged engagement.
"I got the bag fair and square!"
"Fair? Fair?" Indy scoffed, her lips curled back in a cruel smile. "Life ain't fair!" Right and wrong were concepts best left for other critters to sort out. Indy was more concerned with her next big score. It didn't take a learned scholar of rat-lore to know if she won here, she'd be rewarded with part of the bags contents. The sentret, on the other hand, wouldn't give her squat.
Ellie didn't really know what was going on. All she knew was that she couldn't let the sentret get past the barricade of a single rattata. The best way to do that was... "INDY, TACKLE, AGAIN!"

The woman is still frantic about her purse. "Oh please, please, get my purse back!! You don't know how long I had to search for and purchase it. It is the best material I could find. Try not to damage my bag. It may survive the usual daily activities but I don't think the warranty has anything about Pokemon battles in it. I don't have anything like it at home." The sentret knew the only way out was beyond this rattata and the trainer. Getting defense up is good but offense is also needed. It looks down at the purse and debates what to do. Before it could decide what to do, the rattata slams against the sentret and out of almost instinct slashes out with claws connecting with the side of the rattata. Thankfully the contact didn't make the sentret lose its grip on the purse and the contents inside of it. The sentret can smell something inside of it but the scent isn't familiar to the sentret. >>I'll have to explore the contents once this battle is done.<<>>The purse was lying on the ground, with nothing attached to it. The second tilt left Indy sucking air through clenched teeth. The joust of rodents was a brutal, bitter affair. Indy's attempt to tackle the Sentret hadn't disloged the bag. Meanwhile, all it had taken was one attack for Indy to be brought low. Ellie winced in second hand pain. The rat barricade was faltering. How much longer could Indy keep this up? She was clearly outmatched here. Ellie briefly considered sending out Shelbert, but something stopped her. A moment of clarity shined through the fog of war. She didn't need to beat the sentret. She had to weaken it for a pokeball to capture it. The playing field was rigged in her favor. Maybe one more hit and she'd be able to catch the blasted thing no problem. Of course, it was a big risk to assume Indy could take another hit. There was no time for second guesses. There was only time for action. "INDY, TACKLE!"
Regardless of what Indy wanted, it would likely be the case this Sentret wouldn't give a moments quarter. Indy would fight or Indy would lose. Those were the two options. "If you win! IF!" Indy spat out in rattata-ese. Life was a battle field. She would fight till her bones were turned to dust.

The lady stumbled a bit in her fancy high heels. They were not made for running and neither was this skirt. "That thief is going to destroy my bag and steal everything inside if you don't hurry uuuup," she cried out. "Do you want me to lose my medicine? Do you know how much money I spent on that bag to ensure it was the highest quality it could be?! End this already! Can't you just...throw a ball or something! Your tiny rat doesn't even appear to be doing anything!" She was now being melodramatic and wailing as if she was suffering. For a woman in need of her meds most urgently, she was pretty spry. The sentet scoffed at the rat, <Oh I know I will win. You're waaaaay weaker than I am.> And as if to prove a point, when the rattata lunged, the sentret swiped a paw again, slicing a wound across Indy's face that left the little rat dazed and barely clinging on. <Huh. The shrill, useless woman kept prattling on. Ellie was starting to get a headache. It was bad enough she had to watch her pokemon get thrashed like a sock puppet. She definitely didn't need a dumb lady nagging in her ear! Ellie had left home to avoid that very thing! "Ahhhhhg...Just can it, will you? I know what I'm doing!" Right as Ellie said that, the sentret struck again. This time, the small rat fell onto her back, only barely registering what happened.
"oh..."
Perched on its tail, the sentret looked even more imposing to Indy. It was big. Not some dumb kid, but an honest up-and-comer. Indy had only barely left her litter. Her deeds were meager and few. She knew it. The sentret knew it too. Yet little Indy had one trick up her sleeve. One thing in her favor this sentret didn't. The backing of a kid with capture-things. Oh yes. Indy knew how this went. She'd done her part. All she had to do now was wait.
Ellie said nothing. She wanted to, but she didn't. While the sentret kept its eyes on Indy, Ellie readied her poke-ball. In a motion which she was swiftly getting the hang of, she let the ball fly squarely into the brown little rodent critter.

"HOW RUDE! You are a rude child. I just want my bag back and you are telling me to 'can it'? You are the one who is taking forever to stop that thief!" she wailed, as if the world was ending because this sentret was making off with her designer handbag. Maybe it was. Who knew if she was telling the truth about the meds or why she needed them. But she kept scolding her helper until a ball was thrown at the terrible sentret! Her eyes went big and she clutched at her purse, breath held as she watched the ball sail towards the rodent. When it smacked into that fuzzy menace, she let out a rough exhale, "Finally!" And it was finally. Because after a flash of bright light, that sentret was swallowed up, and after a couple brief shakes, the capsule fell still. Drama incarnate then scurried over to her bag in those fancy heel, clacking away. She bent over and primly picked up her back, inspecting it for harm like one might a child.

The woman's bag plopped to the ground as Sentret was beamed into the pokeball. It shook, and shook, and finally clicked. Ellie let out a sigh of relief. She had been holding her breath without even realizing it. It wasn't like Ellie cared about Indy or anything. She just knew if the pokeball didn't work, Indy was toast. Oh, and the sentret would probably get away before she had time to send out a replacement. That too. Though her rat, her tiny baby rat held the line.
Ellie ran towards Indy, stopping herself from scooping her up. She didn't want to hurt her more by touching the wounds. "That was...wow...thank you." The more pokemon one had, the safer they were. With 'mons like Indy at her side, the world was a little less grim. Ellie withdrew Indy into her pokeball. She had earned some rest. When Ellie got the spoils from this lady's purse, she'd share them. Though...there was the matter of actually receiving her cut.
Ellie cursed herself for not grabbing the bag first. She wanted to ransom the thing back to its owner. Now she'd just have to rely on her powers of persuasion. "The bag is safe and sound...though my partner and I worked real hard to get it back..." Ellie used the voice she used when convincing her dad to buy her something. "Surely our work needn't go...unrewarded?" Ellie tried her best to smile.

Just as Ellie was about to try and negotiate for the safe return of the lady's bag a voice from a nearby bush put any plans to do so on ice for the time being. " Hand over the bag now you wimp or I will take it by force." Following the order a crimson haired teen stepped out from the bush with a Chikorita by his side. The troubled youth was clearly not here with good intentions either as both he and the Chikorita were already in a fight ready pose if he did not get his way. " Young man this is my purse and none of your business, leave now before I call the police." The lady said as the teen started to chuckle. Not only was he not afraid of her at all he was in no mood to put up with her demands either. " Shut it you old hag, if I do not have that purse in my hands in the next five seconds Chikorita here will whip you into next week until you beg me to take it off your hands." By now his patience was wearing paper thin and he had little doubt in his mind force was going to be his only option. " Well then it looks like we will get some target practice in today Chikorita, go and take that purse from that old, dried up pile of Botox. If the other pest tries to stop us they will regret it." CHikorita then used her vines to try and snatch the purse from the Ellie before she could pass it on to it's rightful owner " Oh you brute how dare you little brute, Mrs. if you can beat this rude young man I will indeed give you a bonus for all of your troubles. SUch a foul creature needs to be punished."The young man started to laugh manically as he stared at Ellie, he did not think she would dare stop him but at the same time would gladly take her down if she tried. " So I take it you are going to listen to this idiot and try to stop me? Go ahead and try if you dare. If you somehow beat me I will give the purse back but if I win I keep it and I will take anything you have that is useful while I am at it."? challenges Ellie to a battle, he sends out his Chikorita (Level 9) please select a Pokemon. "Huh?" Ellie looked back at the lady, then at this redheaded stranger. She found herself feeling strangely out of place in whatever confrontation was brewing. Even if she wanted to say something, to throw her hat in the ring, she couldn't force herself to. There was no room for her to enter the conversation. After all. The old lady had the bag. The ginger menace wanted it. Ellie was just...there.
She could hardly believe this was even happening. Old lady tries to hustle Ellie into saving the old lady's bag, probably for free. Ellie tries to hustle the old lady into paying out. Then, some dude shows up prepared to out hustle them all. Ellie didn't know whether to be scared of the confrontation or amused that she was witnessing some real juicy drama. This would make for great television...Only it was actually happening.
The hapless lady turned to Ellie. In what was as close to humility as she could muster, begged Ellie to help. If this is a show, then am I supposed to be the hero? Ellie was not used to being in this position. The box hair dye model seemed to find it funny too. He laughed at her. Suddenly, Ellie's heart started beating into overdrive. "So I take it you are going to listen to this idiot and try to stop me? Go ahead and try if you dare. If you somehow beat me I will give the purse back but if I win I keep it and I will take anything you have that is useful while I am at it."
Ellie wasn't the hero type. She had no illusions about that. Still, she knew scum when she saw it. Guys like this? She'd seen them back in Kanto. Jerks who think they're better than everyone. Like they don't have to play straight with anyone cuz they always win. Just thinking about it made her blood boil. Maybe she wasn't a hero. Maybe she never could be, but fate placed this situation in her lap. This time she wouldn't run away. Not when her pride and the contents of that purse were on the line.
"T-that's not gonna happen. " Ellie's voice trembled with righteous indignation...and fear. That too. "I won't let it happen!" Ellie reached into her bag and pulled out the pokeball containing Shellbert. The small blue turtle appeared on the field, between Ellie and the nameless jerk. Shelbert looked at ellie adn then at the surly looking Chikorita. Even a dummy like Shelbert could figure out what was going on. The odds might have seemed stacked against them, but Ellie wasn't stupid. She knew the type matchups, but she had something this loser didn't... She just hoped this gamble would pay off.
"Shelbert, RAPID SPIN!"

"Ha! You don't have anything better than THAT," the boy mocked as Chikorita handed him the bag. He slung it over his shoulder haphazardly, sneering at the girl and the old hag. "This bag is mine. So can it, fish face." "WHY I NEVER! YOU ARE THE RUDEST CHILD I HAVE EVER—" The redheaded boy scoffed, "Come back to me when you can actually move your face to emote, lady. Not like you can do jack in those heels and by the time the so called cops arrive, I can be long gone. So shut your ugly mouth." He propped his opposite hand on his hip and regarded the rapid spinning squirtle with disdain. "Chikorita, handle that fool." And he did. With enthusiasm and flare. As that shell came hurtling towards them, speeding ever faster, the chikorita sent a series of sharp leaves like blades at the squirtle. Those blades didn't ping off, however, but rather found the weak spots in the water-type's defenses to leave long scrapes that ached horribly. Of course, all that focus on hitting the squirtle as hard as possible meant that the chikorita couldn't get out of the way to avoid the rapid spin!
