The boat to Johto was long and tiresome, with a young lady often drifting of to sleep in her cabin. When awake, though, curious eyes drifted above deck, where the view of the sea, Pokémon, and sky almost calmed her. That was, if Amanda wasn't so nervous riding at sea for so long.
Coming from Galar was a change in scene in comparison to the large island she was headed to. The distance itself was so vast in itself that it began to stir Amy's nerves. Will there still be friendly people? I don't know any of the Pokémon there... I suppose I knew what I was getting into, but still... The woman sighs, tapping her leg as the open waters rocked the very foundation of where she was. This was the cost of being unable to afford a flight, sadly.
Amanda looked around at the few things she brought with her—or rather, the few things her father had allowed her to bring. At least she had her Umbreon bag, right? But no Bree to go with it. Dad said something about my one Umbreon—gifted by Mom—being too disobedient, he just doesn't understand. Of course, he wanted to keep all of Mom's pokemon.
Amy sighed, fidgeting with the small array of Pokeballs stored in her bag. That just means I have to find my own, like a real Pokémon trainer. Her thoughts pause for a second as she reflects, nearly feeling a dread overtake her. It was a lot of responsibility on herself, let alone that she'd be alone in a place she didn't know much about. Every region had a professor though, right? She could just start with that.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the intercom—a small box hung up in her room for announcements. "Attention, all passengers. Welcome to Cherrygrove City. Disembarking will happen shortly, and for those of you whom are new trainers-" Of course Dad would tell them, ugh... "-There is an IPF trainee group who will guide you through to New Bark Town. Remember! No catching Pokémon without one yourself!"
Amanda stands, setting aside her things, and falls face-first on her bed, groaning. This has gone just how I didn't want it to go...
- - - - -
New Bark Town, in the eyes of the oddly-dressed Amanda, seemed quaint. Of course, someone dressed as a witch like herself drew a few eyes, but she hoped no negative judgment came from them. Her own eyes drifted, landing on an imposing, yellow building with a notable green roof. That must be it.
Amy adjusts her bag, tugging it at the shoulders, before taking a breath. Let's do this. Let's get my first Pokémon. And thus, Amanda Dugouh steps up and knocks politely.
"Hello? My name is Amanda Dugouh. I believe my father placed an appointment for me regarding choosing my starter Pokémon. He wished me to choose Chimchar, but... I have my own preferences."

Professor Elm waved to the newest arrival and gave her an apologetic look, "Welcome. Yes, I was notified of your arrival. Unfortunately, at this time we have a very limited supply of starter pokemon as there was...well... a break in." He looked over at the boarded up window and the bin underneath it that was full of glass. There were other signs of theft around the lab, like she had arrived before they could quite put everything back into place—a slightly askew table, a chair in the corner with a broken leg, some books haphazardly placed on a shelf rather than neatly organized like the rest. The professor himself even looked a little haggard. "Please, come, come. We do have three wonderful options for you to choose from." He motioned to a machine with an open lid. Within were three pokeballs. "Go ahead, you can let them out and see which one you like best." They were the traditional kantonian starters—charmander, bulbasaur and squirtle. All staples and generally decent picks. She would have plenty of time to meet and greet as Elm answered any questions, offering her a starter kit as well that had some basic gear like pokeballs and potions to help her get off on the right foot. What neither of them noticed was, as an assistant slipped into the lab to escape the cold, so did a little sentret. All fluffed up from the chill, it scurried inside, escaping notice. All it wanted was to investigate this big warm human den for resources...and aha! He knew what that was! Humans carried those around and they often contained food. Target set. It crept its way closer, belly to the floor, sneaking up until... "SEN-TRET!" it cried, latching onto the bag and yanking it right off Amanda. The sentret hit the floor, all four paws around the bag. It then grabbed the strap with its mouth and tried to run off.
Yoink! A [LV 5] Sentret just stole your bag! What will you do!

Amy smiles gently, a glimpse of sympathy in her eyes as she looks over the scene. "I'm terribly sorry. If you'd like, I don't have anything really planned. I could help clean up if you'd like?" For a moment, the young woman seemed earnest in her offer, if a bit too eager to help. Helping someone is something, right? One step closer to understanding Pokémon, especially when it comes to helping a Pokémon professor!
Just as she's about to finally think about her starter, she releases her grip on the straps to her bag. Father would want me to pick Charizard, he did like watching Champion Leon on the TV...
Amanda's hand hovers for a second, almost about to touch the pokeball for Charmander. A small voice told her to stop. Go with your heart, Amanda.
"O-Kay! Bulbasaur, I choose you!" Amy carefully picks up the pokeball, smiling as she tosses it up into the air, all before-
"Bulba-!"
"Sennn-Tret!"
"-saur?"
"Wha-Ah!" Grappled by confusion and a rodent strong enough to not only catch her off guard, but also steal her backpack right off her shoulders, Amy almost falls. "Hey, wait! I need that!" That's the only thing Dad let me bring of Mom's!
Her gaze quickly shifts to her new pokemon—barely having spent any time with it. "Bulbasaur, let's do this! Use vine whip to block the entrance!" Thank goodness I'm no shut-in kid without knowledge of Pokémon.
Trying to ensure that there were no notable exits for the bag-stealing Pokémon, Amy calms down. "It's Sentret, right? You know if you wanted something, you can always ask, right? I have a few bags of trail mix, but if you want something better to eat, I'm sure there's a Pokémart in the next town over, maybe some resteraunts? I'd be okay to pay for a meal, just so long as you don't steal from others."

The wild sentret was quite adamant about escape. It lunged back and forth, trying to show its agility and make a crafty escape. Alas, the weight of the bag dragged it down, forcing it to slow down and stumble. Then, that bulbasaur intervened. Vines blocked its exit, forcing the sentret to try to make a daring leap at a tall shelf. However, with the bag against its belly, it couldn't find purchase on the slick side of the metal shelf and ended up falling backwards and landing hard on the tile floor with a THUMP. Instinctively, it curled up, protecting itself from harm. Elm sighed and walked up behind the trainer and her new partner, "Sadly, wild pokemon who start stealing from humans rarely stop... Perhaps you could show it a better way to be, hm?" He motioned the pokeballs he had given her. "Sometimes all we need is a friend to get us on the right path in life." Amanda takes a breath and adjusts her hat, allowing for the familiar heart pins to sparkle with a sense of her home. This isn't Ballonlea. Let's teach the Sentret a lesson to remember! Amy steadys herself with a reassuring smile to her new partner.
"Bulbasaur, use Tackle! Move to guard the door! You can do this!" Confidence in her new Pokémon was all Amy could really have in the moment, and for the time, she was sure of herself. In the meantime, she prepared one of the pokeballs given to her, resisting the urge to tend to the wild pokemon—she herself had yet to understand them, and this would be good learning experience.
"Bulba! Saur Saur!" The Pokémon seems energetic, rushing towards the Sentret with a decent speed!

The bag was sheltered by the sentret's fluffy body. Those vines wouldn't touch the sentimental accessory, though the sentret did try to break to escape once it thought it was safe. However, it once more saw not clear exit. It looked around and decided to try climbing a shelf again, but this time it backed up to scramble up the front where there were obvious footholds. Once it reached the top, well...it was once more knocked down. It flailed and curled up into an even tighter ball as it bounced mostly harmlessly off the ground and rolled a few feet on the tile floor. A few assistants made concerned sounds, but most were just happy that the wild pokemon wasn't really causing any harm. Just running around. It was quickly growing tired from hauling around its stolen treasure. <Mine!> it chittered, but its ears flattened as it once more couldn't find a way to escape. The nervous looks from around add an unseen pressure, and Amy bites her tongue. You can do this. This Sentret is nothing compared to the Morgrem of Ballonlea.
"Bulbasaur!" The young trainer calls out, "Get ready! Corner the Sentret, now! Use your vines and look bigger than it! Use Growl!" With the ultimate goal of intimidating the meek Pokémon into a corner, the grass-type chirps out an affirmative response, before raising his vines above his frog-like form.
"Bulbaaaa... Bulba Bulb!" <You're just a cowardly thief!> Bulbasaur growls at the Sentret, trying to chase it into a corner!
While the Sentret is distracted by Bulbasaur, Amy tosses the pokeball in her hand before catching it. This is your chance to help Pokémon and understand them. This is my time to reach my dreams!
With a girlish twirl and a reassuring smile to the onlookers, Amanda throws the Pokeball in a fast, curved motion—aimed directly at the Sentret. "There's always a nicer way to do things. Stealing is a no-go!" Come on... Please be caught off guard...

Sentret knew that it would get away with its crime. Humans and their pet Pokemon rarely ever understood. Winter was on the horizon. It made finding food difficult and those who were less fortunate were most likely not going to make it through the long, winter weeks. “Why don’t you go on and find someone else to be a menace too?!” Sentret growled angrily at Sprout whilst shaking a clenched fist in the air. “It looks weak right now.” Elm added, pressing his glasses up along the bridge of his nose. “That Poke Ball in your hand is the perfect tool to capture it. They often straighten out under the care of a loving trainer.” The Professor added with a soft hum. Sentret jumped into a corner as Sprout kept it at bay with his vines. “Seriously?! Cut it out! I just want to survive the winter, dude!” Sentret chittered away. Sentret disappeared into the ball with a blast of red light. It fell on the ground and wiggled around for a moment. “Pokemon are always easier to capture when they’re weakened a bit first.” Professor Elm continued. “They sometimes fail, though I’m not too sure that Sentret will be strong enough to break out…” Eventually, the ball would stop moving and dinged. Success! Elm nodded and gestured for Amanda to go collect her new team member. “Congratulations. Are you going to give it a nickname?” He asked curiously. Sprout gains +levels to [Lv 8]! Amanda holds her breath, smiling at the capabilities of her partner. The reassuring words of Professor Elm strengthens her confidence. Alright, we can do this...
The ball rocks once... Twice... Ding!
Amanda smiles proudly, high-fiving her Bulbasaur, who uses his vine. "Thanks, buddy. Let's make sure to feed this Sentret before it tries stealing another bag..." Amy takes the Poké Ball from the ground, crouching before taking the Sentret out of its ball. "Welcome to the team, Remi. Would you like a snack?"
"Sen? Tret!" The rodent-like Pokémon tries to go for her bag again, before Amy's hand stops her. "Hey... You can like my bag, but no messing around with it, okay? Here," Amanda procures a small bag of trail mix, handing it to Remi. "I want to be your friend, not just your trainer, okay?"
"Oh! Thank you, Professor Elm, for the help. I'm sure Remi wouldn't mind helping clean up?" As Amanda offered to have Remi help clean up the mess, Professor Elm smiled. He turned to the disheveled room and sighed. Paper littered the floor with overturned cups that spilled across some of their pages. “That would be appreciated.” Professor Elm agreed, turning his attention to two of his assistants who nodded their heads firmly. They would work alongside Amanda and Remi to clean up all of the paperwork and straighten the room once more if the two decided to pitch in. Afterward, Professor Oak would walk Amanda to the door with a wave goodbye. “Be safe on your journey, Amanda!” Professor Elm called out to her with a warm and friendly smile. “Oh, Amanda!” Elm stated thoughtfully. “There is a small favor, if you don’t mind me asking. Trainers often learn the most about Pokemon, so maybe stopping by again sometime and becoming an assistant researcher?” There was so much that they could learn about the various Pokemon in the world, but they were often locked in their research inside of the building to gain as much insight as trainers managed to get. A strange bear waited just outside of the building, however. Whenever Amanda finally chose to leave for her very own journey, the spotted red panda would jump out of a bush waving its arms wildly in the air. “I wanna battle! I’ve been practicing all day! Give me a good fight, please!” The bear called out to Amanda. Lv 5 in Drab weather. What will Amanda do?
