PERSONALITY
Andrew does his best to be outgoing but he’s only able to pull that off to a certain extent. He’s known to be shy around strangers, finding it difficult to keep a conversation going as he doesn’t know what to talk about. He’s usually kind and humble, trying to keep everybody happy. He can often sense how others are feeling and can be very empathetic. If someone is in trouble, he’ll always try to lend a hand, especially close friends.
Andrew can adapt to most situations. Instead of fighting for pointless reasons, he’ll usually try his luck at whatever he’s been assigned to do. He’s very supportive and enjoys working in small groups. While he doesn’t allow other people to decide for himself, Andrew rarely seeks leadership roles for the simple reason, he hates to leave people down. When too many people are depending on him, he feels pressurised, and he’s not keen on being out of his comfort zone. While he enjoys the company of others, Andrew prefers his own space. He’s fairly reserved and prefers to keep his problems to himself.
He’s a little conscientious about what he says and does. This occurs mostly when he’s the centre of attention. He prefers to think before he acts so being put on the spot can easily make him nervous. Andrew has often been called a perfectionist. He likes every detail to be right and often spends too much time on simple tasks. He doesn’t enjoy deadlines but he finds that sometimes they’re necessary so he doesn’t put things off. A lot of the time, he works best when time parameters are involved.
Andrew dislikes any form of conflict or tension that’s focused on him or those he cares about. When he is annoyed by someone, he often chooses to ignore them rather than confront them directly. He’s usually very sensible and tries his best not to follow the crowd. Older, bigger and tougher people can intimidate him but he won’t let them stop him from doing what he has to. Whether he’s afraid or not, he usually tries to keep calm and level-headed.
Intelligent for the most part, he knows a lot about Pokémon. He tends to learn a lot from involving himself as he’s not fond of reading unless something really interests him. Most of his battling abilities came from his own research as well as from his old school. Andrew enjoys making new friends and talking about past experiences. He’s sometimes distracted by girls though he usually doesn’t know what to say to them. He sticks to his morals as much as he can, only disregarding them in emergencies. He has been a vegetarian since an early age but his diet is even more limited and considered unhealthy by his parents.
He dislikes when people cut across others who are talking, as well as when they ignore them. He often gets lost in thought and jumps to conclusions quickly. He does his best to keep other peoples’ secrets and tries not to get involved in other people’s arguments. However, at times, he can’t help it and if he thinks someone needs to be backed up, he’ll jump in. Unless someone makes an awful first impression, Andrew usually gives them a chance. His opinions on things change constantly and though it might take him a while to welcome a change, it will often grow on him eventually.
Andrew can be quite sensitive at times but he doesn’t like to let it show. He gets nervous during big moments, regardless of how sure he is that the outcome will be good. He sometimes questions his decisions and regrets doing things. Though he might dwell on these for a day or two, he’ll usually put it behind him soon after. On the plus side, his confidence can be boosted easily and he notices the slightest things people say and do. If people push him over the edge, he’ll bottle up his anger for as long as he can and will normally choose verbal abuse over physical abuse if he snaps. If he starts a rant, he’ll make sure the other person hears every word. But overall, he dislikes arguing and can generally keep his cool.
HISTORY
Andrew was born in Viridian, Kanto to a middle-class family. His parents, Tom and Evelyn, were the owners of a popular restaurant, located at the edge of the city. The restaurant started small, catering for regular people but overtime expanded to provide for Pokémon also. With this unique quirk, Andrew’s parents hoped to attract the passerby trainers who were interested in challenging the local gym. As the business was family-run, Andrew often found himself helping out his parents. His shy nature made it tough for him to interact with the customers initially but once trainers started to stop by, Andrew began to go out of his way to listen to their experiences, often getting into trouble for neglecting his work. He became enthralled by the idea of embarking on a Pokémon journey, collecting badges from the different Gym Leaders.
Having never expressed any interest in his parents’ Pokémon, Andrew’s new obsession was quite alarming. He began collecting Pokémon-based books, comics and other merchandise, despite having little interest in reading. Soon, they began to take over his toys and video games too. Even at the restaurant, Andrew sat near the Pokémon and began sketching them in a small notepad. It wasn’t long before Tom and Evelyn decided to enrol their son in a Pokémon Academy. As the students were still young, the school forbid them from using actual Pokémon, opting for trading cards instead. In the first few weeks, Andrew learned about basic items, type advantages and status effects. Later, they moved onto battling techniques and discovered the different trainer classes. Since his parents wouldn’t allow him to get his first Pokémon until he graduated, Andrew was forced to stick to collecting trading cards. Just like trainers battled with each other using their Pokémon, Andrew and his friends would use their trading cards.
As the years passed, Andrew learned that he’d be in the Academy until he was thirteen-years-old. Since most people started training Pokémon at the age of ten, this really began to bother him. He began arguing with his parents regularly, having felt deceived by them. Contrary to this, he decided he wanted to graduate. School had become a lot more complex than the early days. Andrew’s class had split as each student chose a trainer class to study in detail. Still captivated by the stories he’d heard, Andrew wanted to be a Pokémon trainer. He learned in detail the role and responsibilities that he would have as a trainer. Eventually, the day of Andrew’s graduation arrived. Admittedly, there was a sense of achievement having finished out the programme.
After the ceremony, Professor Oak surprised Andrew by visiting him at his home. The teenager was both shocked and excited when he was presented with three Poké Balls. Though he would have been happy with any of the three, Andrew was most drawn to Charmander as it happened to be the first trading card he’d ever bought. He settled on the name ‘Sanga’ for the lizard. Oak then presented Andrew with a second gift – a Pokédex. Andrew had only ever held the device once before when the famous Professor had given a lecture at the Academy. Now he’d be able to record the data of new Pokémon without the need to sketch them.
The thirteen-year-old began training immediately. Similar to when he was younger, Andrew would challenge his friends to battles. It was still his dream to go on a Pokémon journey. Once he’d done that, he’d love to open his own Gym. Art was another hobby of his, and designing his own Gym Badge sounded like a lot of fun. He could already imagine how exciting and nerve-racking the battles would be. Trainers would never forget challenging him, a lucky few even possessing a badge to prove they’d beaten him. While he regularly trained with Sanga, Andrew also spent a lot of time relaxing. He and his friends would go on short adventures with the goal of finding Kanto’s best secret base. Andrew’s extra years in school had thought him that rushing would lead to defeat. He was still young and had plenty of time to begin his adventure.
At the age of 15, that time came. His friends were slowly beginning to leave home and even his younger siblings were beginning to acquire Pokémon. Andrew decided to test his skills close to home, targeting the Viridian Gym’s badge for his first. He and Sanga packed a bag and got ready to leave for the gym. Before leaving, his parents gave him a shiny new badge to show their support. Within minutes, Andrew had arrived at the Gym. However, he quickly hid behind a high wall as he noticed some shifty-looking characters outside. He guessed that they were probably from Team Rocket as there had supposedly been recent sightings of them in area.
Curious as to what they could be up to, Andrew stuck around; following them inside once the coast was clear. He instinctively guessed that they were planning to rob the Gym as it was presumably filled with many rare, high-levelled Pokémon. Andrew had never actually been inside before, nor had he met the Gym Leader but the reason seemed accurate enough. To avoid being noticed, Andrew ducked behind some crates and crawled along the ground inside. The crates seemed to have just been delivered but he couldn’t see a valid reason for Team Rocket to deliver anything to the Gym. Andrew was quite confused and knew he shouldn’t really be meddling. However, he could tell something suspicious was going on so decided to do a little more investigating.
The teenager spotted an open door up ahead and as he made his way towards it, he could hear voices inside. He cautiously peered inside, appalled to find a room filled with caged Pokémon. The Gym Leader and the evil organisation must have had some sort of alliance. There was no other explanation for these Pokémon being here. Andrew was starting to panic. He’d never be able to face up to these guys alone. He hurriedly made a run for the exit, only to find it blocked off by a member of Team Rocket. Determined to escape, Andrew called on Sanga for help. The Charmander easily defeated the Grunt but before they could escape, backup for Team Rocket arrived. They grasped a hold of Andrew and Sanga and brought them to their boss, Giovanni. It wasn’t long before Andrew figured out that the head of Team Rocket was also the leader of the Gym. The Grunts were ordered to confiscate Andrew’s bag and to lock him and Sanga in a cage to keep them from interfering with their operation.
Andrew was beginning to lose hope. His phone, Pokédex and other possessions had all been taken. He gazed around at all of the stolen Pokémon. He couldn’t bear to think how those people must have felt. Andrew eventually decided that they’d have to try to break out. The problem was, the keys were hanging up at the other side of the room and even the strongest Pokémon weren’t able to do to get free. A human and a Charmander really had no chance. Then Andrew realised that he could rescue everyone if a Pokémon could use Vine Whip. He quickly began pleading with every grass-type but most of them shot him down either because they didn’t know the move or they were just ignorant.
Eventually a Tangela agreed to help him out, extending its vine and retrieving the keys from the hook. The Pokémon handed the keys to Andrew who was able to open the cage that he and Sanga were in. He also freed the Tangela who’d helped him out and promised to come back for the others. After hiding the key in his shoe, he crept over to the door and looked around. When it seemed safe to go, he made another run for the exit, successfully getting out this time. However, outside in the pouring rain, there were ten vans lined up and before Andrew knew it he’d been detained again. The Rockets threw tied him, Sanga and Tangela up with a thick rope and tossed them in the back of a van. Two Rocket members supervised them to prevent another attempt at escape while the others went inside and began transferring some of the other Pokémon.
When the van had been fully loaded up, the two Grunts shut the doors and began to drive off. Once he was sure they were moving and they’d be free to climb out the back, Andrew ordered Sanga to burn the ropes with his tail. Free again, Andrew quietly began to open all of the cages in the van. Once they were all open, Andrew commanded everyone to tackle the back door at once. Effectively smashing it open on the first charge, they all tumbled out of the van. The rain was still heavy and a storm had started up. Andrew glanced around instantly recognising the location. They were in Viridian Forest. He searched around for Sanga frantically as Team Rocket began to chase after them. To his horror, a Rhydon had landed on the lizard’s back, seriously injuring him. With no time to check out his wounds and his Poké Balls seized by the villains, Andrew grabbed the Charmander and threw him over his shoulder. He dashed back to towards the city but after realising they’d never make it, he decided to hide instead. He remembered an old secret base his friends had discovered a few months back and decided that they’d camp out there for the night. It was a bit dark but it would protect them from the rain, and with luck, the Rockets.
Andrew carried Sanga to the base, doing his best to keep the flame on his tail lighting. He knew his injuries looked bad but he couldn’t stop as the Rockets were hunting him down. Eventually he found the location and set the Charmander down carefully inside. His left side was badly bruised and he appeared to have scraped his head off of something. The poor guy would probably have some permanent scarring. Andrew removed his jacket and wrapped it around Sanga. He didn’t want to risk his health deteriorating anymore. If they managed to escape, he’d have to take him to the Pokémon Center right away. Outside he could hear footsteps and voices. It was hard not to interfere as he heard some of the Pokémon cry out for help as they were recaptured but he had bigger problems to worry about.
In the morning, even once the skies had cleared, Andrew decided to stay inside the base for a little longer. He had a feeling Team Rocket might still be around and he wasn’t going to be captured for a third time. The trainer scanned the area before lifting Sanga up and carrying him towards the Pokémon Center. Overnight, he’d decided that heading for Pewter City seemed like the safer option. The Rockets were located back in Viridian and they might be waiting for him somewhere along the way. He successfully he reached Pewter without any problems. The teenager dashed to the Pokémon Center, his clothes soaking and scratches all over his body. He quickly explained the situation to Nurse Joy. She promised to treat Sanga immediately while requesting Officer Jenny to talk to Andrew.
Andrew was given dry clothes and contacted his family to collect him. He then reported everything he’d seen to Officer Jenny. However, she rejected some of his claims as she’d received a report from the Viridian Gym Leader overnight that his Gym had been thrashed and robbed. She said that it was understandable for him to make that mistake but thanked him for the information he’d given her to work with. Andrew continued to argue with Giovanni’s information but ultimately, he couldn’t prove otherwise. The only clue he could give her was the key he’d used to open the cages.
As Officer Jenny left to investigate, Andrew received news on Sanga. Unfortunately, it didn’t sound promising. The Charmander’s injuries would take months to heal and as suspected, there was going to be some permanent scarring. Andrew was devastated, unable to believe how badly wrong his dream had gone. So far, he’d encountered a villainous organisation, discovered a bunch of stolen Pokémon, gotten himself kidnapped, watched his partner Pokémon get severely injured and spent the night outside in a storm. He couldn’t have asked for a rougher start to his journey. After his experience, Andrew’s outlook on everything had changed. Travelling across Kanto, collecting badges didn’t sound very appealing anymore. After meeting Giovanni, his wish to become a Gym Leader was also a thing of the past. And now he didn’t just hate Team Rocket. They’d made it personal so his new goal was to take them down and maybe become a Pokémon Ranger.
Unfortunately, with Sanga’s condition, Andrew couldn’t exactly do a lot. The fire-type was able to come home after two weeks but was permanently resting. To add to the bad news, Nurse Joy had discovered that Sanga no longer possessed the strength to evolve. Though it was upsetting at first, Andrew knew it wasn’t the end of the world. He’d just be happy as soon as Sanga was fully recovered. His mother, Evelyn who had been a Pokémon Breeder when she was young was helping with the healing process. She occasionally mixed up her own medicines and was giving the Charmander some hope. After a year and a half had past, Andrew’s siblings were beginning to leave home their own Pokémon journeys. Sanga could see that Andrew was beginning to get jealous. The years were slowly slipping away and though his health was improving, he wasn’t getting better fast enough.
Some time later, Andrew’s friends contacted him and told them that they were heading to Johto. The thought of travelling to another region and starting over sounded like the perfect way to put the past behind him. Andrew was holding a grudge on the people in Kanto for what had happened. He hadn’t heard anymore on the search for the stolen Pokémon. The lousy police force had probably dropped the case, regardless of the obvious evidence. Andrew’s family and Sanga could all tell that he wanted to go to Johto but he was too loyal to Sanga to say anything. Finally, they convinced him to go, and though Andrew wanted Sanga to tag along too, the Charmander refused. He wasn’t able to battle properly yet and he’d only be taking up space in Andrew’s party. He’d finish out his treatment at home and join up with Andrew at a later stage.
Though reluctant at first, Andrew knew Sanga was right. He really wanted to go to Johto and he couldn’t put his life on hold forever. Sanga could come along when he was ready. The teenager began to pack his new bag full of Poké Balls and medicines. He picked out his favourite clothes from his wardrobe and put them by his bed. Finally, he slipped a photo of him and Sanga into his wallet. It had been taken on their first day together, right after Andrew’s graduation from the Pokémon Academy. Just before he went to bed, he apologized to Sanga and promised that they’d be reunited soon. Even though he had the Charmander’s support, he felt like he was betraying him.
The next morning, after gathering his things, Andrew went into the kitchen where once again, he found Professor Oak and just like before, he had three Poké Balls. Andrew immediately excluded the Charmander, not wanting to replace Sanga. His choice was now between a Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Though he thought both were equally as cool, he decided to choose Squirtle, as his younger sister, Sarah, had started with a Bulbasaur and so had his father when he was young. Since he wanted a new start, he wanted nothing familiar other than the picture of Sanga in his wallet. Before heading off, Professor Oak gave him a new and upgraded Pokédex while his parents gave him a replacement badge case and a Map of Johto, After saying his goodbyes to everyone and hugging Sanga one last time, Andrew set off for New Bark Town with Glint to catch up with his friends with the hope of completing his journey this time.
Family:Andrew has seven family members and is the oldest child. He has three younger sisters and a younger brother.
Tom, Father, 49 Many years ago, Tom was a Pokémon trainer. He grew up in Fuchsia City and at the age of ten, he began his journey. Tom explored the Kanto region, collecting multiple badges and challenging the Pokémon League. When he grew up, he eventually settled in Viridian City and opened a restaurant after marrying Evelyn, Andrew’s mother. Tom is hardworking and usually very serious. He generally dislikes being wrong and can often start ranting to prove he’s right.
Evelyn, Mother, 44 Evelyn has always lived in Viridian City and though she never set off on her own journey, she used to be a Pokémon Breeder. She often cared for distressed Pokémon and helped them to relax. She experimented with different items, discovering ways to cure Pokémon of different illnesses. Evelyn can be very protective and is often easily scared. She is known to get very defensive at times.
Sarah, Sister, 16 Sarah began her Pokémon journey shortly after Andrew. Her first Pokémon, Bulbie, is the offspring of Tom’s Venusaur, Jack. Her signature Pokémon is said to be Cewey, her Cubone, as she generally keeps her outside of her Poké Ball. Sarah can be anti-social but is generally liked by others. She’s usually shy around strangers and often makes herself nervous. She usually favours quiet activities such as reading, writing and drawing though she also likes to sing.
Samantha, Sister 14 Samantha has also started set off on her journey, visiting Hoenn with her aunt. She likes visiting foreign places and standing out. She refused to choose a starter from Kanto, travelling to Hoenn instead. She eventually settled on Irwin, her Treecko. She is supposedly the troublemaker of the family. She loves being the centre of attention and often annoys her family members. Unlike Sarah, she prefers for vigorous activities such as swimming and music.
Olivia, Sister, 11 Andrew’s youngest sister, Olivia has just started her Pokémon journey. She received an Eevee named Eeli from her parents and has since evolved her into a Leafeon. She also received a Growlithe named Louis from Sarah and an Igglybuff named Violet who is the offspring of Evelyn’s Jigglypuff. Olivia has a tendency to shout which often gets her into trouble with her siblings but she’s usually very loyal. She and her brother, Tom, are constantly arguing with each other.
Tom, Brother, 9 Tom is the youngest member of Andrew’s family. He’s the only child that’s still at home. Like Olivia, he was first given an Eevee named Yuggum, which he evolved into a Vaporeon. Tom is spoilt by Andrew’s mother and always seems to get what he wants. Tom will do anything to avoid doing work but when people are nice to him he tries to help out.
