There were occasions in which Finnian's lack of knowledge shone through brilliantly, and this was one of them. He hadn't had a clue that such a thing could happen until it did, and he felt his face heat up as the Meowth slapped the ball back towards him. At least he could dart forward and grab it again, so it wasn't a total waste. Still, if he messed this up for both of them...
Fortunately, it didn't seem as though he had. He had, however, utterly distracted the Meowth who was now focused more on Talia than its previous opponent. Perhaps they could make that work in their favor. At the very least, Talia could help out with taking on the feline, since the Skitty was, in his mind, already well taken care of. Talia could handle that on her own if it came to it.
"Of course, sorry," he muttered, still feeling like a total idiot. "Talia, get ready to back them up!" he ordered. The Squirtle nodded, sucking in water herself. Surely one of them would be able to hit the Meowth with an attack, if they both did so at once. She suspected it would have been easier to simply throw herself at the Meowth like she had the Skitty, but she didn't want to put herself in the line of fire either.

The Meowth came at Talia, first further down the fogged-up terrain, then up in her mug, slashing across the Squirtle's exposed stomach. Skitty didn't want to be left behind and came bounding after the Meowth's stead. Talia might've found herself flailing on her back as the Skitty bumped her backward. Not helped by the spue of honed, high-pressurized water from her mouth. Skitty ducked just in time; the intended target, Meowth, only had a beat of reaction time, then was sent yowling backwards-- An easy target for Azi's counter-attack: right in the stomach. A karmic victory! Meowth was punted straight into the fog. The Scratch Cat managed a howl for mercy. It was cut oddly short. There was a plunk..."KITTY, NO!"Melissa gasped, looking wide-eyed at Finnian. "You don't think-!?" At her feet, Azi had long registered the consequences of Talia and hers' combo-attack; it was undeniable by the smug satisfaction on her mousey little face. Their torrent of attacks was successful. Maybe too successful. Finnian winced slightly as the Meowth took flight, and he froze at the sound that came seconds later. "I... think we better find out," he said, moving forward. That was when he remembered the other feline, and once more tossed a Pokeball in its general direction. He didn't want it running away while they were distracted!
Luckily for everyone involved, Beau was still under the water, swimming around lazily. When he heard a splash, he looked up and noticed a form drifting slowly down from the water's surface. What was that?
Upon investigating, he realized it was one of the felines from the battle up above. Well, that didn't seem like the sort of Pokemon who should be in the water. He swam underneath the Meowth and began pushing up, returning it to the surface. Maybe Finnian and the woman would be able to fish it out completely from there, because he sure didn't know how he'd be able to get the cat out of the water himself.

The refreshing sensation of cold, stark-winter pondwater-- there was nothing like it, not that the meowth had ever experienced. It couldn't swim! With Beau's help, the Scratch Cat managed to fight its way to the surface, though barely, and it was barely recognizable, cream coat waterlogged and clearly fighting against its surfacing; eyes pressed against its skull. It kicked up a fit, hissing and swiping and thrashing against the water as if it were another enemy to beat. As for the Goldeen keeping it afloat, it was less than thankful. Its Scratch attack lashed out from both paws, and it was indiscriminate in who or what it hit: it just wanted out. But at least, for the time being, it was alright, lively and hearty. Melissa could have cried in relief-- maybe she already was, the girl's hands going from clutching her heart to framing her face. Crying out with such elation it flushed her cheeks: "Even when it's outmatched, it just keeps fighting! Wo~ow! This meowth isn't like any Pokemon I've ever seen before...!"Finnian's offhand throw... was certainly that. The ball ricocheted against a soft patch, finally rolling to stop right at Skitty's feet. A little dazed from the ebb and flow of the recent fight, the Kitten Pokemon was otherwise as jubilant as ever, and double at the entry of a sudden new toy! With reckless abandon, it leapt on the active Pokeball like a circus ball, rocking back and forth, until the thing collapsed under her, sucking her into its open halves before snapping shut. While Beau tried in vain to fish the flailing Meowth from his pond, Melissa was fishing the shallow pockets of her uniform with equal success. She cast a look behind her, seeing Finnian's Pokeball cite victory just in time, and shot a huffy look at the breeder. "You wanted that mangy old thing? To each his own, I guess.""My Meowth's gonna be miles better than that cheap-shot. Once I train him...! Just you wait; we'll be taking on Whitney in a month!" Melissa kept talking, but her luck was looking increasingly vacant. Her pockets were inside-out now: no sign of a Pokeball to spare the Meowth its sodden misery. "Umm... so say, hypothetically," the lass started again in a different tone, standing knock-kneed and doe-eyed before Finnian, clearly regretting the words against his catch. "I forgot to get my Pokeballs from my locker. Would you maybe have a spare...?"Give Melissa a Pokeball? She did call his Skitty "mangy..."

When Finnian saw Beau pushing the Meowth up out of the depths he breathed a sigh of relief, though he was surprised when the feline lashed out at the fish who was clearly trying to rescue it. Talk about biting the hand that fed you. Finnian slowed to a halt at the edge of the pond, not sure how to reach down and get the Meowth out without getting clawed to death. In the meantime, Talia approached the Pokeball that had snapped shut and picked it up so it wouldn't get lost or stepped on, since Finnian was otherwise occupied.
Melissa was talking, but Finnian was barely even listening to her. Perhaps he would have been offended if he had been, but honestly that just wasn't him. He thought the Skitty was adorable, and that was all that mattered. She could say whatever she wanted about it. What did get through to him was the mention that she didn't have any Pokeballs. Oh, that would be an easy way to get the Meowth out of the water! Except... he didn't have any others on him. That had been the last one.
"I don't think so..." he replied, reaching for his bag and digging through it quickly. He didn't want the Meowth to come to harm because neither of them had a Pokeball to easily get it out of danger with. "Oh, here we go!" he said, grabbing a ball from his bag and holding it out to her. It wasn't a Pokeball, mind you, it was a Great Ball, and he probably shouldn't have been offering such things so freely, but to him a ball was a ball and this was a situation that called for being generous in order to save someone else.

When Finnian said he didn't think he had a Pokeball she was about ready to give and up and go home, but then she saw it. A shiny re-blue Pokeball? Well, no matter, it looked like a Pokeball and that is what mattered to her most right now. She quickly grabbed it out of Finnian's hand and readied her grip. With an arm raised, she threw the great ball towards the poor Meowth. With a small poof, the ball hit and the Meowth went inside it. Luckily for everyone, there was a fish still in the water, Beau. Maybe they could get the Great ball before it gets into the- phew. Beau let the land on his head, we didn't need any more fishing things out the pond today. The Lass sighed in relief that the ball didn't go into the water. That was one problem she did not need to her list. She watched patiently as the ball rocked side to side on Beau's head. Once, twice, a third time... "TING!" "Yes!" Melissa called out happily glad this Meowth was now hers. What would she name it, every Pokemon needs a good name. "What should I call it? Maybe Tom? Nooo, ooooo oooo, maybe Princess! Yeah, Princess!" Melissa thought out loud to herself, almost like she forgot about Finnian. Now the question was, what if the Meowth was a boy... oh that poor Meowth. She then spun on her heels as Beau swam over to the edge of the pond, where Melissa did not hesitate to bend down and grab the Great ball. "Come on Princess, you're save with me now," She said to the Meowth inside, did she really forget about Fi- She turned around to face Finnian and smiled. "Thank you for the Pokeball and dealing with that mangy Skitty. Now I got a Meowth to clean up. See ya!" With a wave of her hand, she was off, down the path back towards her house. I guess it was now time to leave this Pony as well maybe there would be more to see inside the city? Whatever the plan maybe soon there was cries of a Pokemon. If Finnian was to look up they would see a Taillow flying down to the street below. It tried to land but only could get one foot down before it had to hop a little bit. Steady, steady, and second foot down. The Taillow took a sigh of relief before it started to peck at the ground. A hungry Taillow, maybe it would be good time to battle it, gain some more experience? Or maybe it would be good to leave it alone, angry birds aren't the most fun things in the world after all. It was up to Finnian what would happen next.

"Yay!" Finnian exclaimed when she was able to capture the Meowth. It seemed they had both gotten what they wanted, and that made him happy. He loved being able to do things for others and help them out, since he didn't get to do that very often. He was looking forward to introducing the Skitty to the rest of his team when they got to a quieter place. For now, he had to find a quieter place to begin with. It was starting to get late, so he started to look for a Pokemon Center or some other place to spend the night.
A Taillow fluttered down nearby and Finnian smiled at it while he watched it poke around at the ground. He wished he had something to feed it, but he had precious little food for his own Pokemon at the moment. Offering the bird a little wave, hoping he didn't disturb it, he headed off to see what shelter he could find.
