Ranger Nikki continued to inspect the tracks, pulling out her phone to snap a picture of them up close so that she could see them better even in this fog. Then she shined her flash light down the trail, squinting a bit. She didn't mind if the young trainer wanted to catch pokemon. Except... "Be careful. These are the first tracks we've seen. We don't want them to be destroyed by the battle. Try to catch it quick, okay?" she said as the azurill spat a strong bubblebeam at the ralts, who wasn't too keep on just standing there and taking it. Startled, it suddenly appeared to duplicate many times over, surrounding the azurill with shifting copies in the ghostly fog. It was terribly disorienting. No doubt trying to even hit the ralts right now would be hard! Attacks were more likely to miss anyway and the many copies were clearly overwhelming the little pokemon as she tried to discern which was the real one. Wren had heard plenty of pokemon training tips passively by working at the café back home. One such wisdom was that you have to weaken them before throwing a pokéball. The Ralts seemed to have taken a pretty good bubblebeam to the face thans to River's accuracy. The trainer could carefully discern which Ralts was the real one despite its magical trick. This was the first time Wren had seen a double-team in a long while! What an interesting pokémon with such cool abilities! They were excited. They grabbed with manic determination to use their final pokéball and chucked it in hopes they saw the right one.
River, during all of this, was tunnel-visioned in on attacking the opponent. When she hit the ground to bounce around atop her agile tail, she realized her environment was much spookier than it normally was, and fear ran down her tiny spine. She looked back at her trainer and whined as the Ralts duplicated itself in the thick fog. "Aureeee!"

The Pokeball soared to the sky and bobbed the Ralt's little head, then it sucked up the Pokemon into the capture device and dropped on the ground directly. Anticipation would build as the trainer watched if the Pokemon would break free or successfully captured. Even Nikki was holding her breath as she watched the young trainer capturing this Ralts. The sphere rolled to the right. The sphere rolled to the left. DING! The Pokeball sounded and Wren could add another successful capture to the list. Now, they should really find missing Timmy! They should be careful too, should they not scratch or hurt themselves in this thick fog with protruding branches from the trees rooted in this area.

Upon hearing River's distress, Wren returned her to her pokéball once they heard that familiar click. They picked up the newly acquired Ralts and stuffed her away for now. "Nice to meet you, Juniper. I'll battle with you in due time. Promise." They whispered to their tote. "Sorry about that. Back to business." Wren declared, linking arms with Ranger Nikki once more to traverse the thick fog. The gnarled trees and spooky vibes sent a pleasant chill down the trainer's spine. They were oddly relaxed, despite the environment. Now they just had to not get lost, and with a Ranger, the chances are fairly good.

"The tracks that we saw were really fresh. Little Timmy couldn't have gotten much farther down this road. The real question is where was he when the fog settled in. If he was neck deep in it, he might have gotten scared and stopped moving. That would be the best scenario right now. He might be up in a tree," the Ranger said, looking to Wren for confirmation and understanding. As if on cue, a high pitched voice seemed to echo around the fog. "Heeeeelp! Heeeeeelp meeeee!""Shh, shh, you hear that?" Nikki asked, halting and standing still. She wanted to make sure that the sounds were not a hallucination. "Pleeeeease, heeeeelp me!""Okay, that sounds really close. Come on," she said. Rushing through the fog, they came to an abrupt stop in front of a massive tree. "Timmy?" she called through the fog. "Watch out!" the voice called. Suddenly, a crack of electricity zapped the tree bark of the tree next to the pair, as a dirty, angry looking Mareep looked at them and basically growled. Has anyone ever seen an angry Mareep? Now they have. Level 9 Mareep is angry and in between you and Timmy! What will Wren do? Rare? qVmj8vHVp_1-6 Uncommon? p_1-3 Shiny? p_1-42

Wren listened quietly to Nikki's suggestions as they descended deeper into the fog. Upon hearing the child's cry, they went stiff under Nikki's grip. They couldn't see entirely what was going on besides the flash of lightning. Little Timmy must have found trouble! They disengaged from Nikki's buddy-system and reached for a Pokéball. It just happened to land on Vera's. It had been a few battles since she battled alongside Wren, and from what they could remember, the typing isn't a bad matchup either against an electric type like Mareep.
Vera stood tall, probably alerted by Timmy's scream. Her vines were ready, waiting. "Vera, quick, use Razor Leaf!" They ordered, mud shifting beneath their boots.

Zap! The mareep was a ball of thunder and lightning, surrounded by clouds of fog as it rampaged. Why was it so angry? Impossible to quite tell. Sparks slammed into the trunk of the the tree nearby, resulting in a terrible cracking sound. Nikki gasped softly, moving carefully as Wren sent out a pokemon to face the mareep. "Are you Timmy?" she called out to the voice up in the tree. "I am Ranger Nikki. Myself and a trainer named Wren are here to help!" She yelped when the angry sheep growled at her and tried to charge in her direction. Nikki jumped and grabbed one of the lower tree branches and lifted her feet, avoiding the mareep. Thankfully, Vera was here to help and sent out a barrage of leaves that caught the mareep's attention. It bleated in rage before charging at Vera, bouncing harmlessly off the much stronger bulbasaur. "Go, Vera! You got this!" Ranger Nikki cheered. Wild Encounter Weather: Clear [attr="class","qkt-bkgd"] [attr="class","qkt-wild-pkmn"] Wild Mareep LV 8 HP 28% [8/29]

"One more time! Razor Leaf, Vera!" Wren cheered, dodging oncoming assaults from the electric sheep. "Your parents are looking for you, Timmy!" Wren attempted to converse with the child who probably enraged the opponent Pokemon. Whatever happened between them, it must have been serious.
Vera proudly unleashed another wave of Razor Leaf.

One more razor leaf did it. The mareep was hit by a barrage of leaves and...collapsed at the foot of the tree. Knocked out cold. With that matter handled for now, Nikki kept climbing the tree until she reached the young trainer, then with his help, got him down. "It's okay, Timmy. We're here to help. Like our friend Wren here said, your parents are looking for you. They have been putting up posters that you are missing." And people usually didn't do that if their child was a trainer off on a journey...not unless said trainer usually checked in frequently and stopped suddenly. He must have not been communicating for a while if it had come to this. Timmy looked... a little weary and worn. "I...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make anyone worry," he mumbled once his feet were on the ground. "I was camping and then it rained really hard and...well, the river sorta flooded my camp. I dropped my phone and, well... I couldn't call home. I didn't wanna go back home because I wanted to prove to my parents I could take care of myself and I was ready to be on a journey! But...well... I guess... things didn't exactly go as planned..." He looked at his feet embarrassed. "Thanks for rescuing me from the angry mareep."

Wren got down on one knee to level with the younger trainer. "I get the pride of trying to prove yourself, but it's good to ask for help in hard situations like that! I'm sure your folks would understand." They glanced over to Vera, who looks stronger from her latest battle. She puffed out a green powder-like substance through the air as if it was confetti. "Vera, did you learn a new move? Great job!"
Wren properly thanked Ranger Nikki for her time and help. "I think I can take him back from here. You hungry, Timmy? I can grab you something to eat. It must have been a rough time for you."

Timmy lifted his eyes at the kind words from Wren, looking back and forth between the two older people. "You really think so? You don't think they are mad at me?" he asked, his voice gaining a little more volume as his sadness faded.
Ranger Nikki said nothing, letting Wren take lead on the interactions with the boy. Since Wren was able to do an escort, that would allow Nikki to head in the direction that she was intending to go in anyway.
"Before you go, here," she said, taking a canteen out of her pack. Since the boy was up in the tree for so long, he was likely dehydrated. Timmy took the water gratefully and took a nice big gulp, before returning it to the Ranger. "Okay, let's go home!" the boy cheered, smiling.
"Thank you for your help, Wren. Good luck to you on your Pokemon journey, I hope to see your name in the Contest Champions listing when I see them on television,"
With a final wave, the Ranger headed off, going in the opposite direction of the trainer and their ward. They started walking, and Timmy kept up the conversation. "How long have you been a trainer? Your Bulbasaur is pretty strong," he said, waiting patiently for that answer before getting the next question ready.

Wren thanked Ranger Nikki for her time as they parted ways. "And I hope to see you under the Best Rangers In Johto! Later!"
"I've actually only had her for a few days; my first couple days as a trainer have been hectic." Wren glanced at their full belt of Pokeballs. They had really been busy. "What about you, Timmy? Who's your partner?" They assisted Timmy as he climbed over a large log along the path. It seemed the weather was finally clearing up a bit.

With Timmy rescued, now the only thing left to do was bring the boy back to his parents and into the city. This shouldn't be too hard since Route 30 wasn't a long route. Timmy sheepishly replied to his savior when asked about his Pokemon. "Umm... I don't have a partner yet. Mommy said it's a surprise for my birthday! It's coming in a few months! I can't wait to be a trainer! Dad also said I need to pass math class because he don't want me to be short when I go to PokeMart to buy Pokeballs. Aren't all grown-ups already taller than me?" Short-changed, he meant short-changed. "Hey! It's a Quagsire! Mommy and daddy said we can't battle it or we'll go to jail!" Timmy pointed at the cyan skinned Pokemon. As they continued on, they spotted a Quagsire was laying on its back letting two Hoppips bouncing on its belly for fun. Once the two got close, the two Hoppips hopped and glided away in the wind to hide temporarily. However, the Quagsire merely growled lazily and then got up, and waddled over to hand them over a Sitrus Berry and two polished Mudballs in its hands. No one knew what the duo type would be handing out gifts like that, but hey, who wouldn't say no to free gifts!

"That's so cool! I'm glad you're getting a partner soon. How old are you? We'll have to battle when you become a trainer! Oh, and math is super important, as well. I used to be a waitress." Wren carried on the small talk with their new younger friend. Vera walked alongside the newbie trainer and future trainer, vine whip in Wren's hand.
"Bul!" The Bulbasaur exclaimed as they came upon the Quagsire on the path. Vera stood down and non-threatening in case the Quagsire thought they were going to battle. Wren squatted down to meet the cyan Pokémon's gaze, and gratefully took the gifts like they did once before. "Thank you very much, Quagsire. You're so sweet!" With the gift giver on its way, the two humans and pokemon made their way back to the path to Cherrygrove city. "Pokemon are always so kind; I love interacting with them here in Johto." Wren tightened their grip on their tote in whimsy.

"I'm nine! Almost old enough to get a starter from Professor Elm like other kids do who don't get one from their parents." Timmy kicked a rock. "I just...really wanted permission to journey. They let me do this camping trip by myself as a test. Since I was close to home and almost ten. And...I guess they got really worried when I didn't answer my phone or check in through the phones at the pokemon center, huh?" It had been a while since he talked to them. And now look at him. He had to be rescued and all of his camping gear was gone because of that flood. "...I still want to go on a journey too. Even if it was scary being by myself... and everyone is so much bigger than me... I think with a partner I could really do it!" Despite everything, despite his fear, Timmy looked hopeful. "I could really do it!" parroted someone in Timmy's voice who wasn't Timmy. The boy blinked and whipped around, looking for the source before pointing at a nearby tree. "A chatot!" "Scary by myself! I could really do it!" Squawked the chatot in response.
