Name: Adrian Hartt
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Trainer Type: Breeder
Hometown: Saffron City, Kanto
Appearance:
Adrian is a tall, lean young man. One could even call him on the lanky, scraggly side—as while he has broad shoulders and a fit build, he’s got a somewhat underfed, not-quite-done growing look to him. It doesn’t help that he often walks with a slouch, head down, seemingly staring at the ground, hands in his pocket. But while he might seem like he’s not paying attention, his dark-grey eyes are always alert and flicking to any shifts in movement or unusual sounds. He might one day grow into those awkward proportions, or maybe he just needs to stand up straight for once, but for now, he’s not the most approachable type.
If one does get a look at his face, they’d find strong, hawkish features. His brows are prominent and black and often furrowed with thought, and his skin darkens and lightens with the seasons. He has nice, high cheekbones, a broad jaw, and a rare, but gentle smile. His propensity for blank expressions or scowls is often hidden by his mop of wavy dark hair that he tends to let grow until it starts getting into his eyes and obstructing his vision.
He favors practical clothes. Often this does mean sturdy fabrics like denim in darker colors. And since he often buys second-hand, there is no guarantee that anything he puts on will actually fit him right. The only two items he really seems to care about in terms of appearance are his black leather jacket (that is already faded a bit with age and sun) and the matching boots. They’re both a little scuffed, but he does his best to keep them from getting damaged further and would be hard-pressed to be rid of them unless they were absolutely unsalvageable. He does have a backpack as well, though it actually looks relatively new as he lucked out when he went thrifting.
Personality:
Adrian is a grump.
He’s moody and surly and snappish, and that’s assuming you get him to actually talk! But he’s not exactly mean, per se, as much as defensive and distrusting of strangers. He prefers to watch people rather than actually hold a conversation with them. He is intensely observant, with a propensity to judge people from a distance long before he ever speaks to them. This attentiveness makes him good at reading body language and he tries to adjust his behavior accordingly if the situation calls for it. However, he is far from very adept when it comes to basic human interaction. Adrian has a habit of insulting people, either intentionally or through directness when some sensitivity is needed. And he has a temper that itches up at inopportune times. Loathing to feel trapped or cornered into a situation, he lashes out explosively, usually with words, but if he is desperate enough, he will start taking swings.
Being both short tempered and competitive means that he can be a sour loser. He doesn't dwell on the loss as much as the need to out-do the other person in some way. Rivalry is something he feels more commonly than hate or even dislike.
But despite all of this, he has a strong longing to belong. He has a soft heart for especially cute pokemon and young children, and will humor their antics more often than not, even when he has a short fuse for adults behaving similarly. And he genuinely does try to figure out this whole, being a better person thing through watching other people and emulating their behavior. If only he was a little less clumsy about it…
History:
Growing up isn’t always easy in big cities like Saffron.
Especially when your dad was a drunk that couldn’t hold down a job if it could save his life.
Adrian spent most of his youngest years wary of whenever his father came home. Some nights, he’d make Adrian’s life an utter terror and he’d hole up in his room, listening to the man scream at his wife. Other nights, all would be well, and they’d have dinner together like a nice, normal family. He never was quite sure why his mom never got up and ran off with him as a kid to get away, but some questions are never to be answered. Adrian cherishes his precious memories of his mom, her kind smile, and her gentle way with pokemon. She taught him how to take care of them when they were sick or injured, and how to groom them to keep the fluffy ones looking adorably soft.
But as the years passed, his mother’s pokemon seemed to be fewer…and eventually, when he was about ten, he came home from school and she was gone. Every trace of her scrubbed away like she didn’t exist. It was heartbreaking to a young boy who’s only anchor was his mom, and now was suddenly caught adrift in a maelstrom of a homelife. At this point, his father’s issues really became more glaring, especially in terms of household income. Adrian was never the best behaved student, but he started to lash out in frustration at school, tired and hungry and unable to trust the adults around him. This of course didn’t exactly endear him to other kids.
His social skills suffered.
He ended up getting into fights and trying to find any excuse not to go home, even if it meant hanging around other troubled teens. Adrian picked up some bad habits at a painfully young age, like smoking and even drinking. Did anything really matter anymore? Petty shoplifting. Pickpocketing. Vandalism. This all probably should have lead to him getting into more and more trouble until the law eventually caught up with him…but Adrian had a bit of a jarring awakening from his spiral. You don’t exactly expect to see some very permanent consequences of the spiral going too far to happen right before your eyes.
Adrian isn’t even sure if there was a funeral for the kid, even younger than his freshly turned eighteen self at the time.
It was hard to try to wrestle his life somewhat back on track. To work and try to live a clean, law-abiding life in a city with its own shadows and secrets. Saffron eventually became utterly suffocating despite its size and supposedly vast opportunities. He wanted a fresh start. He wanted to live a life that his mother would have been proud of. One filled with pokemon.
Thus he bought himself a ticket to Johto with what little savings he scraped up, quit his job, and started a new journey.
